Hey everyone welcome back Chris McCormack joined by Blake Smith and today we are at Callaway HQ in carlbad California and we are joined by Evan and Dave and today we have an opportunity to take a look at brand new 2024 offering in AI smoke so couple of different
Models that we have going on here if you guys want to give us a little rundown what do we have with the new offerings okay start with driver uh we have four models this year so our model is going to be the the max driver this is going
To be the one that’s going to be suitable for the most number of players we’ve got a draw model which we’re calling Max D is going to give you a little bit more uh draw bias there we’ve got a really lightweight model and that’ll be our Max fast for people who
Need more speed and more launch then I’m holding here the triple diamond which is going to be used by some of the best players in the world uh generally more high-speed players a little bit lower spin uh offering with that so one of the big stories uh that you guys have had
Across you know a few years now has been the jailbreak technology um that’s been a big part of the stability in the golf club um redistributing some weight and stuff I think that I think uh you guys have lost that so um kind of expand on
That a little bit tell us uh tell us what happened to it and how you recovered maybe some of the attributes that was making it so good yeah jailbreaks been a a key technology for us for a number of years it’s a ball speed technology um and when we started
To look at this new AI smart face and Tred to figure out how we can best Leverage The the face deflection all over the face to generate uh not just more speed but more optimized launch conditions uh we kind of asked ourselves were we over constrained with jailbreak
And would it be better without jailbreak so we did a lot of analysis a lot of simulation both ways we actually built physical prototypes both ways uh and we went with the the the better version and in this case uh the way that we are able to leverage the different uh face
Deflections with this new as smart face um you know it was just a better driver without it and a lot of our optimization process now we’re not just looking at the topology of the face but we’re also looking at optimizing the thickness uh in these Transitions and and other parts
Of the face cup so uh we’re still able able to strategically stiffen the face in certain areas uh to mimic a lot of what that kind of jailbreak effect was yeah and I I’m I really really like the the premium look you guys have gone to
Um it’s it’s clear that you put a lot of emphasis on on this it’s very carbon based so there’s a lot of carbon on the top um can you expand kind of on the 360 carbon chassis what’s the benefit of that what what can we people saying
Where did the smoke name uh come from you know and obviously you want to be able to smoke the ball down the fairways but really A lot of it has to do with the look so the forg carbon that you have on the sole it goes in all
Different directions kind of the white that’s in there really highlights that and we have this 360 carbon chassis that goes all the way around this year’s version is even uh lighter we we’ve got a titanium support structure that’s in there that really helps us take some of
The weight out so it’s 15% lighter you’re able to to do use that to have a weight screw in the front for the for the first time and and also help us with the Mass properties in the back as well yeah I mean wearing the tech on the
Sleeve that’s uh that’s great um when I as a fitter I like to explain what’s going on and when I can see it’s easier to explain it a little bit visible Tech lot of adjustments everything I mean the the overall idea of this um really cool
The AI Tech so you guys have you guys have just expanded your AI kind of tell us what you guys have learned so far yeah I mean I I can set up the smart face and then let you uh give all the details because you’re the man uh behind
It but we really feel like this is a huge leap forward which is part of why the name is is different uh on the smart face so in the past we had the the the flash face but this is really taking it to to the next level so kind of three
Pieces maybe you can touch on number one being swing code using Real Player data number two around the face optimizations and really helping us to kind of tighten it down range and then we want to talk a little bit more about this concept around micro deflections U yeah the the
AI technology is is one that we’re committed to uh we’ve been looking at this for well over a decade now so it might only be in three or four product lines but it’s something we’ve been researching and working on for for well over 10 years uh we’ve got over 880,000
Lines of code now uh that goes into the optimization process uh for just the the face of the driver so um you know initially AI was used to just look at trying to maximize ball speed uh with the Rogue product line a couple years
Ago we started to use it to uh try to lower spin uh we saw it was effective in doing that and uh now we’re using the face to uh optimize all the launch conditions for a more optimized outcome down range so looking obviously more distance and a tighter uh shot area down
Range so uh these micro deflections are basically um allowing us to optimize the localize the deflection uh behind the ball no matter where you hit it uh to get a better uh more optimized uh launch condition so this could be uh improving speed uh increasing launch lowering spin
Uh minimizing um Sid spin all to get a more consistent uh shot area down range I know that was something that you saw in your testing with the the triple diamond and and some of yours as well on shots off center I mean this is really
Goes Way Beyond just the Bulge and roll type of story where that’s more about Smart Start Line This is really about the the launch and spin and that consistency yeah and I think the the real unique Thing versus on this driver versus Paradigm uh is we’re now using
Real Player swim mechanics uh swing Dynamics uh into the optimization so we’ve taken hundreds of thousands of data points characterized which drivers are most likely to use which which model uh and then we’ve used their swing uh in the optimization process so it captures head speed attack path face angle uh
Impact location probability of impact location all the things that um go into the optimization so that the the net result is a better fit for the player we expect to to use these these products now I know we’re only one year away from Paradigm which was a fantastic product
For us at truspec now transitioning into AI smoke line a player that is currently playing Paradigm and now curious about new AI smoke when they come in to take a look at this family of drivers what would they essentially expect to see as far as differentiation between current
Paradigm and now ai smoke so across the board I think you’re going to see uh a little bit longer uh and more consistent in terms of launch conditions and downrange if you go model by model if you take the max model versus Paradigm standard uh spin rates will
Probably be about 200 rpm lower which is going to drive more distance uh and I think it’s about 10% more consistent down range uh if you look at the max draw versus the X model from last year definitely a lot more uh draw bias a lot
Easier to turn it over it’s really um geared towards the player who SL es the ball um so I think on the driver is about 10 yards uh further left uh or less right for most uh and then the triple diamond I mean it’s been uh you
Know our Workhorse on tour it’s already very low spin already a ton of speed we’re really trying to build more consistency out of that model so uh I think you’ll see considerably uh more consistent spin rates uh and just a lot tighter down range on that model I think
One thing to mention as we talk about the swing code when the people come in and do their fittings if they match their swing close to what we’ve put into the swing code and that’s going to be a lot of players they’re going to see some magic magic things because what you were
Talking about was the testing and we tested across the board so we had slower swing speeds testing Triple Diamond who wouldn’t necessarily be fit into that but if you match closely to the swing code be a lot of golfers uh there’s there’s going to be some magic there so
Elaborate on swing code a little bit so when you’re looking at development implementation so um typ drivers are designed using robots in kind of a static location and you’re looking at impact points kind of all all over the face now with the swing cat as you were mentioning earlier you’re looking at uh
Launch angle you’re looking at face you’re looking at fa face the path so it’s not just the static impact location it’s really how they’re delivering that to the ball and we’re taking literally thousands of golfers and building them into the best fit and and building the
Face to to fit those golfers you want to exp on that so like said a lot of our analysis historically when we go through simulations we have a very static Club head and we move the ball around uh but we know that’s not how players actually
Deliver the club head sure uh so we used Real Player data so that we could model all these things headp speed attack path face angle impact location um so that we can change the orientation of the club head at every single impact location to better match what players actually do so
This captures their overall tendency you know for a Max D player they’re going to come outside in hit down on it um but it also captures what are their Tendencies when they miss on the toe versus when they miss on the heel sure and these are all captured in the analysis and again
It just gives a better better result when this uh Club is actually put into the right players it’s really interesting where the way that uh AI when you start using AI you were really trying to maximize really the center of the club and just make it as fast as
Possible and as we know you can’t really go too fast now in the center so you guys are really starting to focus in on M hits um from my testing I for sure started to see that um especially low heel high toe um it definitely would
Retain spin uh retain ball speed um the Del and that’s a good point and one thing I want to touch on because people talk about AI now being such a buzzword and it’s out there around everything and I’ve had people you know this this past
Fall come in say what is the AI actually do on the on the driver and it’s really this idea of machine learning and and getting the optimizations better and better so you want to talk a little bit about that on how you how we we used to
Have five to seven faces and now we have all these virtual prototypes out there yeah I think on a uh you know each each face is unique to each driver model based on like we said the swing code of the specific kind of performance objectives of each of the models but in
Each case you know we go through 50,000 simulations or so uh before we have the face design that we think is uh as good as it can get so it’s basically going in it’s changing the topology of the face it’s running all these simulations it look it looks at our performance
Objectives it looks at all the constraints we have whether it be usgaa constraints or material constraints um and it learns at uh when it makes changes in thickness what is the result and it goes and it it it makes all these uh different thickness changes and until
It has uh a topology that it thinks is is as good as it can get given the constraints and objectives that we give it and uh that’s when it kind of sets pencils down and we go and make it we obviously test it and verify that the solution the computer actually
Translates and uh uh happy to say in this case it definitely did and that’s why you see the back when you look at the back of the phas and I think they’ll show it on the on the screen it is really unique and it’s something that humans wouldn’t come up with because all
The different topology changes all over the face B are putting in all the different constraints that that Evan’s talking about so it really is amazing but it’s not just the buzzword you know it’s not just marketing like we are actually using the AI machine learning
To create uh the face of the driver that is i that’s a good point I if you rip this guy apart and look at the back of the face and it looks like a topographical map to your point I mean what human is going to go this sounds
Like a great design for a club face yeah or like let me make this a little thicker here and and all that and and it goes back to the original story with the uh the flash face going back where the computer kind of spit out something you
Guys were like this this will never work I think you know we have a lot of Engineers working on this but our minds are thinking very localized you know if you want to improve the performance here you think of what can I do here to
Change that where the AI code is a very Global optimization and it’s looking at the whole topology of the face as well as the face cup and making changes over here that might affect uh somewhere else and it looks at it in a in a complete
Way uh where again it’s not just looking at speed uh it’s looking at the total package and giving the best overall result yeah I kind of wanted to expand a little bit on that so it’s not that you just say okay AI give us give us a a
Face and we’ll just put that in the engineers take it and they’re like okay well is this really going to work so it’s really at the end of the day it’s up to the person that really knows the engineer that’s going to really take it and be like okay let’s do some testing
Let’s see if this is where it yeah you can’t go out to Best Buy and say let me just buy you know an AI to design uh it doesn’t work that way I mean you talked about 880,000 lines of custom code those are not written by the AI those were
Written by our team that we have in here to to kind of further develop the the face yeah I mean it it’s a obviously you’ve got a lot of computational power but you’ve got to know how to harness it and you’ve got to give it the right
Inputs tell it to look at the right things give it the right data from real golfers so that it can learn um as it goes uh how to how to pull this off oh that’s great information on driver a transitioning into Fairway Metals MH so now we’ve got AI smoke family Fairway
Metals and I’m assuming great compliments to some of the driver offerings so why don’t you give us a little overview on what we have with new Fairway Metals yeah so four models there um as well and they’re going to have tons of speed very forgiving as well the
Swing code that goes into the fairways is different than than the driver what we’re seeing is players tend to miss it a lot lower um on on the face you don’t have as much of that low heel to kind of high toe pattern that you have with the
The driver so you want to talk a little bit about how swing codes different with fer yeah I mean the process was really the same you know we’re using Real Player swing Dynamics uh as inputs to the optimization to try and get us more distance and more consistency um the
Swing codes are very different obviously on a fairy wood uh people’s uh head deliveries tend to be different uh and like Dave touched on a really a big difference between the models or impact location so in the maxd it’s a real emphasis on really low on the face
Obviously uh some draw to help people turn it over um those players also typically need a little bit higher launch as well tend to be slower heads speeds uh and then the triple diamond uh is the Other Extreme where the impact location is more consistent they’ve got
A ton of speed but we just need more consistency yeah we have the four models as well so max is going to be the core model I think that’s the one you’re holding there we’ve got the adjustability there in the three and the 3hl which is great for fitting people
Want to change out their shafts but that’ll go all the way up to uh an an 11 we’ve got the draw models in multiple options as well if you need a little bit more of that draw Max fast these are the people who need more launch they need
More speed comes with a 40 G shaft already in there you can get fit for your own shaft as well and then the triple diamond we were talking about really for players who have have enough speed already we’re improving the consistency and working on the spin rate
With that so it’s it’s uh you know what I’m I’m really looking forward to in a fitting saying that’s a smoke show you smoked it I mean there’s a lot you can do with smoke one of the reasons why we we love the name and we still
Have the Paradigm on there because it is a paradigm change in construction that’s where that 360 carbon chassis comes from so we wanted to continue that but we didn’t want it to be Paradigm 2 because it really is different the smart face is really the thing that takes it to the
Next level using AI so that’s kind of why we came with the name uh smoke and we can have a lot of fun with that as well he’s got to smoke it sounds like the people’s driver and you’re going to smoke it I’m definitely looking forward to Bringing these into our Matrix at
Truspec say with that let’s put a bow on it and make sure give us a like subscribe to the channel and when you are ready to test new Callaway AI smoke book your next fitting at your local TR speec we’ll see you next time
