Okay so one of the things that surprises most golfers when it comes to distance is how easy it is to get some sneaky extra yardage and the reason for this is because I would say a very large percentage of golfers have the wrong idea about the back swing position now

This may be you many golfers think that they need to in the back swing position they need to create a really big turn and they need to really move behind the ball like so the problem with this type of idea and the problem with this type of movement is all that ends up

Happening is you just end up moving too much over towards your Trail side and you get stuck behind the ball so when you hit the golf ball you get stuck on the back foot and nothing is moving downward and what I mean by this is if I

Did this simple exercise and I suppose you guys could copy this at home could use a bit of resistance tubing I’m going to demonstrate just use it like so so I hook my club in there and the point is if this was my back swing position and

I’ve got a pull down on this resistance there’s no way you’re just going to be able to just use your arms to pull down hanging on the back foot what you’ve got to do is you got to learn to turn you see when I turn my chest and I move my

Chest as it rotates it moves back downward what starts to happen is that my chest moves into my left arm and then my chest will move into my left arm and it moves my shoulder and even without consciously pulling my left arm down and I’m just rotating my chest you can see

The way that I’m able to pull down on the resistance tubing and then if I add a bit more additional pulling force all of a sudden I can start to really load that club and the point is that’s a very much a downward feeling and you’re only going to get that downward feeling

From a good back swing position so one of the training Gates that I use a lot with students is my foot wedge and the idea of the foot wedge is to understand that yes we are going to be pushing down into the ground but in the back swing

We’re not going to go like this what you’re going to do is this leg is going to stay flexed this leg is going to be you know your resistance and you’re going to think about lifting your arms up and when you move more this way the

Pelvis can move into the leg and this is why when we look at some of the greats like maoy tiger Adam Scott they don’t look like they’ve got loads of rotation it’s because they’re not excessively moving they’re just moving the necessary amount so they’re moving the pelvis into

The leg like so the leg stays flexed this type of movement here gives you the ability to lift your arms up which then means you can rotate down and and emulate sorry that resistance tubing exercise and that’s what you want to do and the amount of students online face

To face that get absolutely surprised by the fact that in the back swing position it’s more about lifting your arms up and moving them down as opposed to such a rotational move it really surprises them and that’s what you want to be doing so I would suggest try the resistance tubing but

Another real simple exercise you can do to start getting your arms working is hit some ball with the very narrow stance because if you’re somebody who moves like this you’re not going to be able to to lift your arms up and you’re not you’re going to fall off balance so

Just arms up down up see the way narrow stance up down get a really good distance and a good strike on it start using your arms because I guarantee you’re not using them enough I’ll see you soon

  1. Totally understand how moving off the ball gets us in trouble. However we often hear that se should not be lifting the club. In the rotation if we are not turning from side to side(swaying) , are we not lifting as we rotate the shoulders?
