Disc golf has recently become a popular trend across the country, including some players from the central Pennsylvania area who are making a name for themselves.

One of them is Columbia sophomore Kayla Hess. The 15-year-old disc golfer has already picked up a national championship in her division along with other major victories.

“Starting to play tournaments back in 2020 and 2021 I was scared because I was the only JR or only female and it was something I just wanted to grow,” said Hess. “While it might not be a major sport like basketball or football it’s still a major sport people can get into.”

Hess is not the only one emerging on the disc golf scene. She frequently plays with her disc golf partner Emily Dale as well. The two have created a fun and playful relationship as both sponsored athletes.

This golf has seen a steady rise in popularity across the country and one of the best of the best is a young lady from Lancaster County who continues to impress Fox 43 7 Brooks joining us again with more on the sport’s rising star and her national recognition. Yeah.

And while there’s no traditional path for this golf, Columbia, sophomore, Kayla Hess has quickly earned her keep in the sport as she’s already racked up multiple accolades and continues to make noise on a national stage with each flick of the wrist. The goal is the same for Columbia. Sophomore, Kayla Hess.

And that’s to continue to show she means business on the disc golf course. Starting to play tournaments back in 2020. 2021 is I was scared because I’d be the only junior, the only female signed up. And so it’s something I just wanted to grow and show that.

It’s, it’s while it might not be a major sport like basketball or football, it’s still, um, a really fun sport that people can get into, but she’s done more than just get into it. She’s burst onto the scene already claiming numerous championships. Including the women’s national title in the 15 and under division.

And her play has put many on notice. Kayla’s like half my age, but she is still a great friend of mine and it’s so cool to see people have the opportunity to have access to the sport. This the point that she is at right now being sponsored at 15.

I think that gives her a lot of opportunity and a lot of doors that can open for her no matter the tournament, she’s got national attention including becoming a sponsored athlete. However, there is still work to be done before advancing to the pro level.

That’s kind of the main goal before I turn professional. I’ll be going to both junior and amateur worlds next year. So I’m really looking forward to those events and as her young career continues to blossom, she’s making a name not only for herself but for her community as well.

It really shows that, um, it can happen from anywhere. Yes. Like other schools, Hempfield, Mahan township, those type of schools can be bigger, but someone from disc golf can come also come from a smaller school like Columbia. He’s next tournament will be exactly one month from today on February 4th at the Gale

Classic in Lancaster.

  1. I played sports my whole life and was a collegiate baseball; I was ranked in tennis when I was 16 in florida; I played 4 years of basketball; I love regular golf very much. I just took up disc golf and it's more challenging than it appears. It's also more fun by yourself, and is interesting because of the many angles I can work. It's a great sport that you can enjoy with someone whos not very good at all. I'm loving it, and hope we see more communities develop free, but challenging courses. It's a great exercise, and takes skill so your mind is churning for solution after solution. The courses are beautiful and help places feel nice to visit and live in. It's also affordable because you don't need much to play at a high level. I use 6 discs, that's it. Focus on the putter.
