Hey everyone welcome back Chris McCormick joined by Blake Smith and today we are in our Scottsdale HQ Studio giving a run through of new mauno Pro irons so Blake give us a little rundown of the the three models that mizuno’s got going for us this year so mauno has

Been doing forged irons for quite a long time they do their grain flow forging that hasn’t changed so they have gone from the 22 series to the two four Series so 1 three and five they have made some improvements as far as Turf interaction goes some some upgraded Tech

In the players iron some upgraded Tech in the middle iron this one was very very popular something I fit a lot this was one of the most forgiving irons for what it was small compact it’s interesting because they’ve gone smaller but they’ve increased playability workability they’ve done a lot of

Technology upgrades here it’s going to be be fun to hit these and I’m ready to see how uh see how good you make these players irons look but before we get into the bay make sure give us a like subscribe and with that let’s get in the bay all Right so Blake here in the hitting Bay first one out of the gate we’ve got new mauno Pro 245 so this is going to be replacing that 225 in that Hollow cavity players distance iron so first Impressions what do you see here it’s a little bit more compact from the top

It’s a little bit thinner Top Line so that top Line’s a little bit more eye pleasing to the better player it’s still really really Sleek looking looks like they they put a little bit of camber on the bottom here for Turf interaction but overall I mean it’s a mauno it looks

Great left that out to the right a little bit but that was flushed it felt felt really good just jumped off the face got 140 efficiency out of that right off the bat and it’s a little bit less Loft than I play but that’s the category right so they they need to be

Able to deloft this a little bit get some ball speed up that was flushed that felt really good good ball there I mean that grain flow forging that they do that proprietary method really makes that feedback really solid feels really soft and fast and the 245 is also going to implement that chromal

Tech that they use just giving that face a nice pop through impact little harder metal than what you’re going to see in the other two models and like you had kind of alluded to the amount of tungsten that they incorporate in this head in the 225 we saw 30 gram of

Tungsten in that 2 Iron through seven iron now moving up to the 245 they’ve really increased the amount of tungsten that they’re putting in that head Now using up to 47 GR in the head there dropping the CG and making it even more forgiving and easier to launch yeah so

That was something with the previous version so that previous version a little bit hard to get up in the air for certain players that was the complaint that I had they knew it and they fixed that this this tungsten behind the face just feels really solid feels like a

Hammer hitting the ball um some people are going to really like that it’s it’s a subjective thing so some people are going to it some people are maybe not going to but if it’s going to perform and for the player out there that likes kind of that transition into

More of a traditional blade Style Iron 245 is going to have that chromal material it’s going to have the tungsten and that transition is going to happen from two through seven iron getting down into the eight through wedge now you get into that more compact traditional style

Head for that mid to short scoring iron and that’s going to appeal to that better better player but 2 through seven little bit of tech there a little more forgiveness yeah and and people like to think they want to blend sets and stuff like that and that’s fine you know maybe

The 5% of the people that do that or 10% of the people that do that that’s fine but these companies are starting to make the long irons really jump and the short irons flight and even in this category so a lot of tech here it’s really good-looking Golf Club feels really good

So good sample there and this is going to be more that players distance category like we talked about so now transitioning into mauno pro 243 this is going to be more in that intermediate kind of leaning towards that little better player iron so big story with all

Three of these is like we had kind of touched on size of the head gets smaller also face progression little thinner Topline little less offset across the board and they’ve also introduced a little more bounce for the player out there so if we saw something in that 22

Series that dug a little bit might have had a little too much Turf interaction for those of us that get steep into the ball we’ve got more playable bounce across the entire family this year yeah and and being somebody that hits a cut

So I hit a little bit of a fade so I have a tendency to get a little bit steep so I’m going to really like some of that bounce that theyve they’ve introduced you can see it right now you can see that that front that front line

There that that Leading Edge little bit beveled look from the top it’s a little bit thinner okay so that’s that’s going to maybe take a little bit of confidence away from some people but it’s going to also give some people some confidence when I look at that I feel like okay

This thing is really really good looking from the top can’t really see the back of it so that I know that’s a complaint for better players sometimes you can’t see the back of this so let’s find out how it Feels that might have been missed a little bit left it out to the right a little bit but it was it was pretty solid so the Loft difference here is going to make it go a little bit higher a little bit shorter efficiency is going

To be a little less I didn’t hit that right on the button I hit a little bit thin um they they really are starting to pay attention to thin misses because that’s where most people Miss irons especially like 6 78 iron so that one got out there for a really thin Miss so

We had talked about the different shaping and and one thing that Muno kind of focused on is that new wraparound soultech so different grinds High High bounces giving the player a little bit more versatility and a little bit more forgiveness getting that blade into the turf that was flushed that one might go

In ah too much drw pulled it pretty be happy with that all day so feel difference between what you had in 245 and 243 now you have that copper underlay really kind of going after a more soft consistent feel so so notice big difference between 245 and 243 for

You yeah so I’m not really a fan of the hollow cavity I really don’t like the hollow body feel personally I know that that’s something a lot of people like so I like the solid feel here um that previous version with uh with the hollow body and and what’s behind that and all

The technology and stuff that was taking some of that Hollow sound out and I think that’s why I don’t like it necessarily that’s fair but when it when it comes to something like this I’m going to gravitate toward this it’s cool because they’ve got some technology in

This with slots so in the four and the five slot underneath so it’s going to get the ball up in the air it’s going to be really forgiving down on the bottom part of the club and then a little bit smaller slot six seven and then eight to

Wedge it doesn’t have any slots so right they’re they’re really keeping in mind how this golf club is going to come through the the area where most people are going to miss it especially in the for the five iron but overall this thing feels really solid so you touched on

Feel feel components is is one of those really personal components to where you can’t fit a player for what they feel so on the player side has to check that box look good sound good feel good feel being subjective and Acoustics are so key to a player’s feel so for you that

Hollow cavity sound in the 245 doesn’t necessarily appeal to what you tune into your F but there’s tons of players out there that absolutely love that sound of that ball coming off the face a little faster pitch is a little different so I’d say between 245 and 243 there’s

Definitely a sound difference M yeah that sound and field definitely you’re married that that is something as Fitters will hear so if you’re a really good fitter you can you can fit with your ears so we’ll be back there and we can we can hear one and be like oh well

That sounded different and then the player responds to that and it goes from there so just because I don’t like that hollow body doesn’t mean it’s not not it’s not necessarily a bad thing but um it’s sounds really fast this this feels and sounds fast too so there’s no

There’s no drawback here which is pretty cool so right in the middle so now let’s transition into 241 get into that more players oriented blade style head okay see what you think here all Right so last one we’re going to test today is going to be 241 so this gets back into more of that players oriented blade style profile so how does this look at address for you knowing that from the 221 to the 241 they’ve now gone smaller tighter thinner and just really

Kind of gone back to a much more player oriented size and profile so this is going to date me a little bit the mp33 was my first set of zunos and I loved those things they looked gorgeous they were they were too advanced for me at

The time sure um I think I was a five handicap maybe which you know might have been able to figure it out but this takes me back and then I played those MP 33s until my first year of college and then I transitioned out of those but

This definitely brings me back that Top Line nice and thin back of it muscle back mauno it’s got pretty much everything that they’ve done in the blade into this one so they’ve learned some stuff about the way that they cut the toe out a little bit or the heel

This Turf interaction looks like it’s definitely going to dig so this is not necessarily for somebody that’s going to be really steep although they could probably figure it out but this just it looks like what it is and it’s not going to give you much more it’s what it looks

Like we’re going to find out how it Feels okay I hit that a touch on the toe wasn’t bad though this has 2° more Loft than that than that 4 five so it’s going to get up in the air it’s not going to go quite as far but distance isn’t necessarily something you’re looking for

In this category that felt really good though on this and you’d mentioned that smaller head profile looking like it wants to get in the turf and wants to dig they did reshape the soul they gave us a little bit more camber they increased the bounce so they added a

Little more playability to that player that does kind of get into that Turf more aggressively yeah and that one was a miss so that was pretty far out on the toe and it still went 183 in the air okay that’s pretty good for a blade yeah this is definitely not a distance oriented

Iron so this is for your player that wants to have control of their ball flight wants to be able to shape shots and really go after different types of launch Windows and ball flights basically on command yeah and in this category this is this is the area where

People don’t want to hit that that one that goes 15 yards farther mhm so when you’re a consistent ball ball Striker and you see that flight go and it’s on your window and you’re like o go in and it goes over the green so that’s that’s where the separation has to be as

Fitters we got to put them in that category they’ll tell us about that that’s they’re probably not going to go to a hollow body sure um most of the people in that category they want that so they most time they’re in the bunker in front of the green so if they can get

That one that gets hot that gets under the green and more power to them that’s that’s uh it’s exactly why they want that Golf Club while you’re hitting these last couple I do want to touch on with this year in the four series and in previous generations you could combo

The one and the three or the three and the five this year I do want to point out 241 and 245 very very big difference in size then you get into that 243 where you were able to make a combo with the one and the three Series this year the size

Is quite a bit different yeah so the footprint between the one and the three is pretty substantial so if you’re looking at something as far as a combo set goes I’m going to recommend more often than not just go full set of 243 stay away from the combo you already

Have that more traditional players type head once you get into that eight iron through wedge but the size difference in the head and then also the width of the sole the length of the blade there’s a much bigger difference this year between two4 1 and 2 4 three yeah and more and

More I’m starting to fit people that way when we have that conversation I’m like listen you’re going to want the Forgiveness just because the wedge you might think might flight a little bit different they’ve got some technology that changes that yep so that the way the technolog is going is making it so

You don’t have to do something like that and that’s beneficial for the company as well 100% let’s get one more and take a look at some data nice and that copper under underlay here really kind of leaning itself more towards that solid soft feel yeah that

That was that one really felt good when you hit a mauno right in the middle nothing feels better so Blake now taking a look at the data I mean pretty much everything it came out as advertised here so give us a run through what you’re looking at between these three

Models it’s really cool as far as ball speed goes it all lines up the way it really should be U maybe a little bit of loss with the one but launch angle same kind of thing you’ve got you got two degre separation between the one and the

Five that’s pretty much what we got there spin rate wise you control a little bit more with Spin and then carry distance you know you’re not going to try to hit a bomb with a six iron when you’re in the one when you’re when you’re in the one area and when you’re

In the five area you don’t want the you don’t want all that spin and you you want some forgiveness so it all it all really panned out standard deviation is really cool too that that is very tight all the way across the board so all in all it’s pretty much exactly what they

What they’re looking to do with this line of the Muno Pro and it’s great for us at truspec I mean having an opportunity to have some separation between the models yeah so I mean with that I would say when you’re ready to test out new mauno Pro Line book your

  1. Fitted for a set of 245s with px6.0 and 2* flat from Japan off my holidays last November. Absolutely pleased with them and I am coming from a set of Ping i525s and they definitely sound less hollow with more ‘punch’ from the tungsten inserts. They look sexy af too.

  2. 241, I'm gonna miss the mirror chrome. As someone who plays the 221 and is going to upgrade this year, I was surprised to hear you guys suggest NOT doing a combo set. My current irons are not combo'ed (221 4-PW) but this year I was going to get my 4/5 in the 243. Is this a new recommendation this year from Mizuno, avoid blending? Mizuno seems to have been pushing the blended sets for the last few iterations. I do see what you're saying about the 243 sole being substantially different. Thanks

  3. Going 245 off a +1 hcp. I love the blades, but the 245’s are honestly hard to hit a bad shot with. It’s legalized cheating. They feel surprisingly good coming from another Mizuno blade

  4. I played MP-33s for 18 years, and I’m not nearly as good as you. I think it’s a matter of confidence. I loved blades and hit them well.
