Don’t turn the shoulders for a good iron golf swing how can I say that turning the shoulders is one of the most common terms you hear in golf turn the shoulders for a big turn big distances more consistency the problem is it’s a slightly inacurate term and it also

Leads to many swing fults that really do cost your consistency when it comes to trying to hit solid ANS I’m going to show you briefly why that happens and what I want you to do instead that is going to give you more reliability more Simplicity and give you that aha I don’t

Have to try and turn my shoulders when hitting an IR shot how can I be saying that turning your shoulders is one of the most damaging things to your golf game give me a moment trying to turn the shoulders is what gets people stuck a lot of the time because what happens

When we try to turn the shoulders basically creates way too much movement and a couple of incorrect patterns but really first of all we need to understand it’s kind of nitpicking and it’s kind of irrelevant because it’s always just what’s intended by the saying but when we think of turning the

Shoulders in the G ring we think of this okay sort of rotating that way our back facing the target a little bit more but the shoulders don’t rotate you know the shoulders only sort of move this way they go up and down they go this way they don’t really rotate out of their

Sockets so that’s like picking a little bit but let’s just put that to the side but let’s say you want to turn the shoulders and you think you need to make a big turn let’s say you want to focus on turning I’m just going to keep using

That term so then you think okay I want to make a turn moving my left shoulder over here and when we do that more often than not what happens is this shoulder moves way too much over here causing a couple of things one it it kind of leads

To a bit of a sway which with a driver you can get away with a little bit so if you’re someone that hits drivers better or off the tea better than you do your irons this might be one of the reason but if I move off the ball too much and

I’m trying to move this left shoulder behind or turn it I end up being stuck back here a little bit too much on the back swing which is going to make it harder to make my way back consistently and that’s where that kind of overthe top look comes from the other thing that

Happens when we move the left shoulder or lead shoulder rather when we try and turn it okay we turn it we end up kind of being a bit too flat as it were CU we kind of just sway off the ball we go this way all right both are going to

Create some compensations so you think okay I don’t want to turn the left shoulder what about the right shoulder what happens when I move this well if I move the right shoulder what happens is I whip it on the inside I get way too deep and I get stuck this way and I’m

End up being a little bit trapped and then I have to move over here because I’m trying to move the shoulder This Way Again way too flat if we try and combine a better feel of a wind up we can get the desired result that we’re trying to accomplish with turning the shoulders

But with much more efficiency really because we don’t have have to move as much we don’t have to rely on such a big pattern it can be shorter it can be simpler and there’s two main fields that we’re going to combine together that are going to give you the back swing you

Need for optimal iron striking we want to be able to control the low Point meaning the low point of our Arc we’ve got a circle here with an iron we want it to be just after the ball if we are turn you know when people turn we end up

Too far far this way and we dump it here or there’s momentum and we move too much that way we’re getting too steep on it so we want to stay centered that’s one of the keys to having a reliable low point so the low point is just after the

Ball so here’s what we are going to do instead wind up is the first feel I want you to have the wind up starts from the ground but in essence it’s this spiral factor and you know the spir spiral swing has been talked a lot by uh Pete

Cowen over the years and tons of golfers have talked about it a long long time ago golfers from a hundred odd years ago talked about this spiral action this wind up this twisting it’s not about turning it’s about winding up so we want our sort of shoulders as it were this

Plane that we see instead of moving this way so much we want to feel it going this way so it’s more tilting down now we don’t want to just dip the you know the shoulders this way cuz that creates a bit of a reverse tilt we need it to be

A wind up so the feeling is that my right hip is going up my core is winding up and my chest is moving up this way I’m coiling up and I’m staying centered as if there’s a flag pole all the way through my head outside my backside I’m

Winding up this way but here’s the thing I’m not just winding up my upper body okay I’m not staying passive with my legs I’m applying pressure into the ground into my thighs and it’s it’s like an expansion I’m feeling this movement it’s like down and up down and up at the

Same time I’m applying pressure into my foot but winding up and here’s the extra little piece once we’ve got that pressure loaded we are wound up people say in my other videos where I’m saying don’t turn well your shoulders are still turning they might look like they’re

Normal but that’s the point I’m not trying to get them over here I’m not trying to move my shoulders I am just allowing them to follow the rest of my windup action now we’ve hopefully got an understanding of what we’re trying to feel with the wind up the hips are sort

Of being pulled up we’re pushing into the ground my rib cage is lifting up and I’m maintaining this angle along my torso that’s a bit more towards where we want where the ball is rather than over here okay and it’s not a long swing it’s just a few inches that’s almost how it

Feels just a few inches but we have to be wary of something and that something is what are the arms doing because if I did what a lot of you think you need to do which is stay connected okay like got to keep those arms connected to the body

If I just did that even with a wind up my arms end up being really stuck here and short and then what will happen is we try and raise the arms up and the sequence gets all out of whack so we have to add on a Quee and the cue I want

You to have you can give it different words you can call it lift you can call it elevate but what we’re after is the arms to elevate as we are winding up so it’s this slightly separate feeling and it might feel a bit awkward especially if you’ve been used to pinning your arms

And trying to hit this way it might feel a bit Loosey Goosey by allowing those arms to actually raise but what we actually want here is as we wind up we don’t want to be clamping across our chest we want to have a little bit of

Freedom so there’s a little bit of air as we’re making our back swing now you can grab a head cover and you would have seen this drill in another form which is placing it under your arm and keeping it there as you’ll make your entire swing

But I want you to do this little test I want you to see that when you wind up this way where is that head cover staying against your chest or do you have enough elevation and allowing those arms to raise along the plane that the head cover will fall out this is going

To give you that arm lift and fall that is just as natural as if you were going to throw something if I said throw this club as far as you can you wouldn’t be like this you would let the arm unit swing freely so as a little test stick

This under your arm or you can use a golf ball even and make the wind up and elevat there is going to give you a pretty much perfect or perfect enough back swing and then from there because we’ve wound up enough we can stay centered and we just

Reverse the movement okay we reverse the movement to wind back down and lower those arms back into the ball it’s simplicity at its finest and there’s so much less movement going on and that’s what we want we want to have the freedom to swing we want the Simplicity and I want you to

Try and piece these two moves together so we piece that together we wind up and we Elevate the arms wind up Elevate and swing it’s a much easier way to hit your arms you’re going to be more reliable and control that low point and the swing

Is going to feel simple now if you want to hit drivers without making a big shoulder turn hitting further easier you’re going to love this lesson
