Collin Morikawa shoots 8-under 65 | Round 1 | The Sentry | 2023

In the opening round of the 2024 Sentry, Collin Morikawa shot a bogey-free 8-under par round of 65 and is tied for second place.

A brand-new season on the PGA TOUR begins this week in Hawaii as the Plantation Course at Kapalua hosts The Sentry. Scottie Scheffler will be teeing it up in Maui this week and is coming off a three-shot win at the Hero World Challenge at the end of November to wrap up a three-win 2023. The American will look to improve on finishes of T7 in 2023 and T13 from 2021 at The Sentry. Reigning FedExCup Champion Viktor Hovland will also be in Hawaii this week after being a member of the victorious European Ryder Cup team and capturing three top-10 finishes worldwide in the fall to cap off his 2023. Making his fourth consecutive appearance at the Plantation Course, the Norwegian star will look to improve on his highest finish of 17th. Max Homa will also be feeling confident this week as he claimed victory on the DP World Tour at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in November which was one of six straight top-10s worldwide. He played well for a T3 finish in his third appearance last year at The Sentry. Others to look out for are Tommy Fleetwood, Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele.

That’s a big change for Colin I mean he’s used the same driver for the last three or so years that he just absolutely loves and for him to make a change this must be better that’s nothing wrong with that that’s really good positioning there gives you a good angle in on the left

Side of that Fairway have a chance to leave it to the right I’m glad you said that cuz that’s what I always do I’m like why am I looking up when I know the sun like you think the sun staring into your retinas would make you not want to look up yet

It’s the always the exact opposite easy to leave it out on the right side 23t hey there you go Colin morawa has found red figures again 25 under the last two years here but the Milt is more just for his comfort well he looks like that went exactly where he wanted

It you put a bunch of Milt in your drivers back in the day Andy you can’t believe the stuff we did as we just saw with Tom Kims it just won’t work too hard this needs to get up it didn’t sound like a clean strike boy boy that’s the mistake you can’t

Away yeah this is Ned one of those holes that was designed by Corin khaw With The Wind in mind and when that wind isn’t there you can drive the ball right to the edge of that Fairway and then have a really good shot at getting home and two on that

No problem call morea heating up five under through 10 holes so just playing for a position yeah I think this will stay on top of the hill and you’ll have you know 100 yard shot or so at the most just see how much carry that has at

That that thing take off once it getss going down that Hill down H to the right still going sideways yeah that ball probably will end up just barely in the rough there’s enough green to work with he can come in here a little bit lower if he wants

To when they move the hole location over to the front right of this screen and you drive it down there and and you guys are doing a better job keeping in good shape and working hard at it Mora now six under car well you called it is it fad enough

No green bunker though not a horrible spot today where the hole is located but when they move it left but today not so much got it down in two there for a birdie also birded the 18th to get that 66 and this was more a cow at the 14th

Hole yeah this is a really good shot right here ball below his [Applause] feet no problem take a 50% birdie rate just a slight breeze off the players back working the ball from left to right that’s what you don’t want to do can’t K it straight it’s going to be fine got away

With it just getting into the the first cut that’ll be fine so he has to take it all the way to the center of the Green Oh spinning says it was spinning shouldn’t hurt you though tatch that corner and roll down yeah good what a terrible

Miss for eagle and a nine under opening round it’s going to be low but should be a tap in and a really really solid start and really right about where he’s been 25 under par each of the last two years out here on this course so basically on Pace for what he expects

Every time he comes out here 13th round for Colin here on the plantation course only one of them has been an overpar round so that’s 65 for morawa who of course shot 62 on the final day when he charged toward the title back in 2022 another fantastic round 8 under

Park Colin the new gear the new equipment seems to be working your games organized how’d you feel about the round felt good um look we we missed a few more furors than I probably would have liked but the f Fairways are really firm out here and obviously with not a lot of

Wind it’s going to get get a lot of roll and can’t do anything about that other than adjusting what you’re going to hit off the te but game felt really good felt solid throughout the bag made some up and downs hit some good irons and uh

If we just clean it up I think top to bottom uh will be good for the next three days specifically when you shoot around like that what do you need to clean up in your mind what’s give me one element no I I think it’s just doing

Everything a little bit better right I mean I felt like everything was really solid and I’m not going to complain about 800 I take that round the next 3 days um but you know I think a few things just feeling a little bit more comfortable with the driver the driver

Was great on the practice rounds but obviously first term of the year uh you want to you want to see some good shots we saw a couple missed a couple but got away with them out here well you know as well as anybody the scoring around here

Continues to go low so how do you keep your mindset and that aggressive mentality yeah I mean today is over I just cuz I played well today and you know whatever the lead will be by by end of the afternoon um there’s going to be

A lot of birdies a lot more birdies a lot of vles especially with the wind today um I expect someone to at least shoot 9 or 10 um come this evening so we’ll see how it all plays out but look I’ve got to keep my foot on the gas and
