Basketball conversation with Bart Manson of Fargo Davies Eagles as the Eagles are off to a good start on the year five- one with their lone loss at the hands of the moded High Magi and be joined by Taylor kungl of the mport CG Patriots as Mayport will play in that upcoming

Barnes County boys basketball tournament starting tomorrow then we’ll close off the conversation with the number one rated team in division a boys Hoops in North Dakota that is the kred Vikings as Brad whale will talk about the 5-0 start to this season and our senior Spotlight

We head to Detroit Lakes with Isaac heru as the Lakers product is heading to the University of North Dakota for Collegiate Football let’s get into our conversation first up is Calvin craft here from the Barnes County tournament then we’ll hear from Bryce laxol after their win last night for Northern cast against the

Grovers join us now the commissioner of the Barnes County boys basketball tournament he is Kelvin craft also the boys basketball coach as he will have a couple of hats to wear coming up here throughout Valley City as they get ready for the boys side girls side already happened in December Northern cast came

Out on top over Maple River now the boys have an opportunity the Lobos in mport CG playing the championship game last year we’ll see what happens this year Calvin as you take a look at the boys side of things here um Valley city is going to be back in it like they were

For the girls it’s their junior varsity but other than that uh Barnes County North is going to be there we mentioned the Lobos m support CG obviously yourself with enderin uh a lot of similar teams in recent years are going to make up this tournament a lot of B

Division teams that are going to make up this tournament but still should be a fun uh 12 basketball games fingers crossed Mother Nature the whole nine yards as we’ve kind of alluded to during the last couple years to get these games off in Valley City yeah no we’re excited

To have a full eight teams uh and everybody who’s kind of closer to the area we did have a couple even reach out that wanted to join uh but we were full and that’s a good thing you know sometimes we’re we’re grinding to find another team but uh on the boys side

Especially we’ve uh we’ve been lucky and fortunate now this one is going to be a Thursday Friday Saturday which is a little bit different I think maybe one time I’ve been doing this for 12 years we had it but it’s it’s usually like a Tuesday Thursday Friday or a uh Monday

Tuesday Thursday so anyway three days in a row uh like a state tournament kind of is going to be taxing I think for all teams involved especially on that 94t floor but it’s going to be a good environment and we’re happy to be back at the bubble and hopefully the weather

Is really good yeah you go through and I was kind of before we started chatting here I was like all right who who are some free throw Champs you know names 1959 from eekelen you know you don’t hear eelen Too Much unless you’re driving by and you’re saying I’m taking

The E the eckelson exit for a lot of people moving forward you know Dennis ragy in 59 and 1984 Rob Nudell of Maple Valley was the free throw champ it’s always fun to go back and then Uxbridge 1917 won it in 17 and in 1918 the first

Two years so Calvin just like we chat about with the girls the boys a little more history with it and definitely some towns that you don’t get to hear of which is always cool to bring those towns back up during this time with especially xxbridge as an example yeah I

Didn’t know they were that dominant in 1917 and 18 that’s pretty cool I know like I did some research for a wall rap in enderland our first team was in 1908 but you’re talking like uh the schools around here that’s maybe five six seven eight nine 10 years after we even

Started so whoever came up with this Barnes County tournament in 1917 uh was really thinking ahead or really thinking of of doing things obviously for uh for players and for teams because that’s pretty much the start of basketball in class B North Dakota so that’s pretty cool then rob

You know he’ll probably ref a a few games he refed some with the girls uh so yeah we should probably get Mark to announce hey we have a ref but also more importantly he won the free throw Champion or Free Throw Contest in 19 80

Or whatever it was so yeah no it’s cool the the book is the best uh even my bylaws I have here for the Barnes County Athletic Association there’s some stuff going back uh as far as we need to go for records and things like that but now

It’s kind of easier to upkeep but whoever did keep the records was very good you know from 1917 to today sometimes it’s like wow something got lost something was on a fire something was wherever but uh for the most part in my room at the school there’s I have

Folders that I’ve never even looked in but there’s some some good in-depth records and now with uh obviously with media and and things on the computer it’s easier to keep track but no like I said 106 years here whatever it is of the tournament U we’re trying to keep it

Going you know when I think World War II didn’t have one and then Co we did play though we never not did not play uh we know we played Hillsboro we played white Shield we played dun we played different games and so uh we’re trying to keep

This thing going and it’s uh it’s been good and you know some people really like it so you know the history of it is uh is good to see and we’re trying to keep going forward yeah going back to 84 here I got one of the programs from

Recent years here uh Nell again also Maple Valley won the championship so that was a twofer when you can get a free throw champ Kelvin and you win the championship it doesn’t get any better than that now you’re getting Hardware I’m not sure I’m not sure if he won the

Sportsmanship award back then either but that we should check on that but yeah that’s that’s pretty cool as you kind of take a look here Calvin what’s one thing that you hear the most from your point of view about this tournament whether it’s the girls side the boys side um

What’s one thing now that we’ve had had a little bit of time here in the three division or three class system I know you and I chatted about hopefully seeing different teams allowing this tournament continue to grow there’s obviously some staple schools that are going to be here

Every year but then there’s one or two schools who maybe works on their schedule one year the next year maybe it doesn’t so what have you been hearing now on this um the first time going through it for the girls you mentioned you had some teams you know reach out to

You on the boys so what have you kind of heard about this tournament moving forward you know we kind of start or I kind of start like the the closest teams ask them you know the the closest geography team because obviously Thursday Friday Saturday comeing to

Valley city is a drive sometimes uh you you’re kind of handcuffed by geography a little bit but then hey the closest teams for said yes the other said no then you kind of keep going on the map and going to the next School uh and then

Kind of you know if we’re at a standstill put it out there on the list serve for the state and and people kind of come from we had Standing Rock come uh you know we’ve had different teams we had Hillsboro come for a day so like if

You’re GNA commit to three days it’s a little bit of a bigger deal it’s probably easier on a Thursday Friday Saturday and I can’t really decide the Thursday Friday Saturday the Northstar schedule uh you know in Mark pots and Valley City in the bubble kind of I kind

Of try to pick a week and they kind of tell me what they can do for that week and so it’s not like it’s perfect uh especially if it has to be like a Monday Tuesday Thursday teams getting out of school and principles and things like that probably aren’t the the biggest fan

Of that so Thursday Friday Saturday gives us a little more options uh but I can’t promise it’ll be Thursday Friday Saturday next year uh but yes uh coming in especially the street class system now people have their schedule open uh you know so most people have seven eight

Teams or nine teams in their District uh that’s only you know and there’s 19 games played and now you’re looking for 11 games uh that really opened it up for especially in the class B level depending on what the class a level does if they play everybody twice or not so

That has been good so far because now people are looking for games and uh you know maybe they can make it work coming to Valley for three days but yeah geography we go there and then as soon as Word of Mouth hits and people start asking and things like that and kind of

Balloons from there as you take a look at it from a coaching perspective here Kelvin you’ve obviously played in the championship you’ve won the championship you’ve had some good teams for the enderland Eagles um taking a look at it for three days in three games or three

Days what as a coaching hat uh what’s the one thing you want to get out of this whether you go 3 and0 you go 0 and3 you know these are non- region non-district games so yes you want to win them all but at the end of the day

You want your team to get better from Thursday on once Saturday kind of comes here what are you looking forward to as the coach once it gets to this week yeah just looking forward to uh you know being a grind and seeing how we react to things like obviously we’ll be excited

And try to upset the number two seed on Thursday but then win or lose you have to come back and play another tough game on Friday so I like I do like the back-to-backs we just played one over the holiday break and uh you know especially in The District Tournament

Region tournament you have to play that that’s my favorite part of these tournaments is the uh the turnaround and the the short Scout if you will you know back in the day like the region semifinal you’re coming off of a 18-hour you know you just won the quarterfinal

Now you got to play the most important game of the year uh on a on a two-hour Scout or whatever it is so though that’s the best part I think for teams is to kind of see who they are then obviously at a third day uh not very often do you

Do that in a row uh especially except for the state tournament so that’s kind of a cool thing now that third day is really a grind you’re going on fumes uh you know you’re depending on how your depth is you play Five Guys you play 10

Guys it might make a little bit of a difference it has for us in the past so yeah it’s it’s a it’s a fun thing to find out a little bit about yourself how you’re going to react on day two and especially on day three and and see who

You are but that’s kind of the best part from the enderland perspective here Calvin early on you know about five games in so far this season who’s a player two and people come out to the bubble here throughout the week that you know they can say okay here’s someone

Maybe you know make a note of because we’ve had a lot of really good talent a lot of really good players the Carson barthol from last year taking a look at the herberts uh to the Elijah Dixons of the world and Company who’s going to be

One or two of those guys here this year for you yeah you know we kind of turned the page and uh turn a new leaf and and new guys have to step up in new roles you know Carson guba is a sophomore um played a ton of minutes for us last year

Plays all the Min Sports this year he’s a dude he’ll be really good in the coming years he’s really good already he’s fast athletic uh multiport athlete who who gets it done and he’s kind of fun to watch and he kind of changes our gears for us he’s fast he’s quick uh he

Can kind of you know guard anybody and stuff like that so he’s good and Aiden glarum is a senior who’s been around the block been on the team gets a lot of rebounds averaging over 10 a game does some things offensively for us to keep people honest and then Anthony Wendell

Brennan Bartholome Jake s has had a great junior year so far probably been our second leading score and has done some good things and we have Orion ad Dargo Preston Dawson and Aiden Chamberlain Off the Bench we play eight guys which is more than we’ve played in

A while and so we’re deeper we have some new things we got to figure out uh but as the season goes we’ll get better a final thing for you K Before I Let You Go favorite memory you’ve been around with this tournament now for a little while I’m sure you’ve heard some stories

Of yester years as as well from a a different generation playing in this what’s one or two memories that come to mind when someone says Barnes County girls or boys bassball tournament what kind of comes to mind for you here Kelvin you know the first one comes to

Mind is when Valley City uh Varsity played in it and and the pack crowds you know I started this 12 years ago and that was kind of cool like the semi-final final there was there was a lot of people uh and then it kind of goes to just you know selfishly or

Personally uh playing Hillsboro winning that game winning the championship uh you know the two years that it wasn’t a championship we went three and 0 and so we were kind of the deao Champs there three years in a row so you know just the the winning the games and the

Atmospheres and kind of uh you know wearing the Hat taking the picture after the game uh is you don’t get that anywhere else and so that’s kind of the best part is he you win a championship you get a traveling trophy you get your name Etch in stone and you get a a

T-shirt or a hat and you take that picture so you know anybody who has a chance to play in the championship game or win that means you won two games or three games in a row uh and that’s that’s a good feeling because you don’t get that unless it’s a District

Tournament a region tournament Etc and so uh people do like that the one coach that reached out wanting to get in he’s like I want my guys to play in a tournament right you know where it actually means something like you go to a jamere you go to the classics and it’s

One game one game you know who you’re playing no matter what in the bubble you know it’s one of the rare ones left in North Dakota where hey you win you’re going to play a winner and you win again you’re going to play another winner and

And you kind of move on and it’s a goal and it means something uh and we like to keep that going forward so that’s probably my best memory just winning and trying to win again and try to win that third game again yeah those are always

The fun things you never know who you’re going to get on Saturday whether you you lose the first two you win the first two there’s always someone new coming up on that always fun too maybe selfishly for you District tournaments coming around the corner so some of those teams now

You get a little familiar Kelvin with maybe the surroundings and what a District Tournament might feel you know a month and a half two months down the road from what this spes County boys basketball tournament is going to be yeah you know I’ve never put a huge

Emphasis on it but some coaches love going and playing where that District term is going to be or region term is going to be and now you get three and so you have a option Maybe maybe playing six games at the bubble uh if you’re a district one team right now other the

Boys side and that’s that’s pretty you get a little bit Advantage for sure uh after a few games kind of like playing at home so yeah that’s if we if you get to The District tournament and get to play all three uh that might be the

Equal to your home games like we play seven home games you know somebody who make advances in District Tournament could almost get that so like yeah does make a difference and that does help people wanting to get in you know we will rotate that District tournament

Maybe to wton also so it’s going to go back and forth girls and boys but now the girls would be in the Vantage side next year so yeah that’s that’s a big advantage and a good thing for the tournament Happy New Year to you Kelvin thanks as always for making the time and

We’ll we’ll see you coming up here sooner rather than later at the Barnes County boys basketball tournament yeah thanks for covering it you make uh you make it way better and give our audience to the state so we people can check out the bubble and see what’s going on

Kelvin craft head coach again for the enderland Eagles and commissioner of the Barnes County boys basball tournament will’ll continue on our coaches show after this live work and play here in Hillsboro North Dakota the Hillsboro Economic Development Committee can assist you with information and a support for business and housing

Experience Hillsboro more at 104 as we continue on our Tommy’s Express Car Wash postgame show join us now as Bryce lall as again Northern Cass improves to 5-2 on the season before we talk about any part of this game Brak what does it mean to get to 5-2 through

Seven games here as you got a quick turnar around again on Thursday against Ron Valley Edinburg you we’re just trying to get better every game and I think that that’s signs of improvement there’s um things we’re better at right now from from game one and there’s a lot

Of stuff we need to work on still a lot of end of the game stuff just being strong with the ball um making sure we’re getting helps side knowing where Shooters are at the end of the games that sort of thing but um you know our

Our our goal and is to uh you know win every game that we go out there and play and I thought we did enough tonight we competed hard I was really proud of our guys we lost Andrew early in the game we had guys come off the bench and step up

And you know that’s what it’s about a team game and everybody um stepping up next man up being ready to come out and compete and I just thought we played a really nice game yeah had three players in double digits Landing with 20 had Hudson with 15 and Trey with 13 but talk

About the defense here in this one uh I know both of you guys were heated on the bench and rightfully so it it felt like a region rivalry game early in January but a Trey huz are able to get that block shot there in the first half and

You’re able to cral it and go down the other end uh he altered some shots as well throughout the game Keelan on the interior did the same thing what was it about your guys defense and much as the offense came alive in the third brace but what was it about your defense that

You like for four quarters of basketball well defense starts the offense right and those guys you keelen and Trey you mentioned those guys they’re down in the weight room all summer long you can tell how much bigger they’ve gotten how much stronger they are and then you can see

How much more confident they are right now and that’s because of the weight room and they’ve done a really good job of bringing kids down there being leaders putting it upon themselves that they want to change this program they want to become competitive every single

Year um so it’s really hats off to them that was a great play by by Trey and obviously you know Kyle and I we we’ve we’ve coached against each other a lot and that’s not the first time both of us have got teed up the same game so it’s

It’s it’s fun to coach against him he’s one of my favorite one of my favorite coaches I think he’s a good friend of mine and uh it’s it’s always fun he got one and looked fun so I figur I better get one too so let’s talk about land

Moser’s play I I know they were kind of it felt like a boxing one maybe even though it was man defense they were trying to wall him off and not allow him to get the ball back he had to earn his 20 points here tonight Bryce well what

Did you see most in terms of Landon’s play maybe not forcing the issue ort particular times cuz it can be pretty easy for a player just getting hounded for 32 minutes of basketball to really have to force some stuff where it seemed like he kind of allowed the game to come

To him at different times yeah he let those other guys get involved and you saw that especially in the third quarter the more guys we can get scoring the more dangerous we can be they can’t guard you with two guys that have to play you straight up and even with two

Guys on him he’s he’s so good he’s so talented he’s so smart with the ball um he can score in so many different ways his jump stop and his his step back and the third quarter he had those pullup dribbles um he hit the three on the the

Inbounds which is a great shot he’s just he can just that’s scoring at three different levels that’s what makes him so hard um but the best part about that was getting everybody else involved and seeing those guys score and seeing other guys have success Jake Ryder knock down

A couple big threes it was just a really big uh really big team game Devon wolf came in um he’s kind of our he’s kind of our glue guy he comes in at uh doesn’t play a lot every game but he knows his role when he comes in he going to get

110% from that kid every single time on the bench he’s calling all plays um so everybody that stepped in the court and know just really proud of them all and I think that’s our first win over Oak Ro since 2016 region Championship U I think that’s only a third time we beat them

Since 2005 so it doesn’t happen a lot and um they’ve been a team that’s kind of been a Thor in our side I thought the last few years couple different times we were just as good at them they always seem to come out and kind of blow us up

So it was really good for our guys to see like hey we can do this it’s kind of snowball in and out of the rest of the season and we can figure it out and we can keep getting win on top of win and and hopefully we can be a dangerous team

Down the end yeah let’s talk about your next handful of games against B competition you know with drton Valley endenburg you always play them obviously you got a little family uh mix in there Hatton Northwood Midway M will be before you kind of get to that stretch run of a

Lot of a games to close out January and February here Bray so what do you hope to take from the couple of games in Carrington from tonight into non region games and look to continue to pile up some wins here before you kind of get back into you know region One Division a

Play here Bryce yeah we just want to take it a game out of time um clean up turnovers make sure we’re not missing box outs making sure we know the assignments each team of those different Valley urg’s a banger type team lots of big athletes we got to make sure that

We’re probably going to be going under a lot of screens making them shoot from the outside but long shots long rebounds making sure we’re box know out every time um Midway Mento they got a ton of talented guards you got to make sure maybe we’re going over screens we going

Quickest way with long shows we just got to make sure that we know the assignment every single Timeout on the court we know who we’re guarding and those are the little things that make a difference down the end of the year when a possession here possession there is a difference in a

Ball game Bryce happy new year thanks so much for your time best of luck moving forward here throughout the rest of the season appreciate the cover Chase thank you that again Bryce LAX head coach for Northern cast will continue after this here on your live event hey Growers

From Taylor kungle of the mport CG Patriots in a moment but here’s our one-in-one conversation with Bart Manson of the Fargo DAV Eagles joining us now from the Fargo Davies Eagles he is Bart Manson as a squad is off to a 5- one start here on

The season as they now get ready for the 2024 portion of their schedule and Barta always a fun time of the year once you kind of flip the calendar over that means you you maybe think what you came into the program maybe had some pieces that you knew coming back from last

Year’s team that was able to make it to a state tournament maybe there’s a player or two that’s playing maybe a bigger role than what you thought of earlier in the season with how they’re practicing and how they’re maybe uh attributing themselves in games just how’s everything gone from your point of

View early on this season here Bart you know six games in well you know I I I take a look at you know our team and you know one of the things that I don’t really care to do and that’s just maybe me because I’ve

Been doing this for a long time is play a lot of games in December and so you know we probably have played the least amount of game I I don’t know I should look at the standings when I say that but you know we haven’t played you know

That many games six games and so we’re not even really a third through our season and some teams are already hitting that you know eight nine games in there and so for us we’re still trying to figure some things out we have some guys that we’re trying to plug plug

In and play and see where they you know uh fit and and things like that and we’re just trying to you know develop uh what might be our identity this year and and uh and so we’re still kind of working through a few of those things

Right now the one thing I’ve heard from coaches even before the start of the season was with this new three class or three division of basketball that it should be competitive night in and night out of Bart I think that is really the definition of the EDC boys here every

Time you look at box scores whether it’s one team playing or all seven eight teams are in action you just aren’t really sure of what you’re going to get early on the season there’s some been some tightly contested ball games uh what has it been from your point of view

So far it seems like one through seven eight even nine you know they have a chance to knock off anyone on any given night I think this is one of the deepest years that the that the EDC has had and and the reason I say that is just

Because of the fact that you know um and nothing against those teams but whopping in and Valley City dropped down into the class that you know in Devil’s Lake who is having you know a good year there too and so losing those three teams you know

And kind of really when you take a look at it it’s the Metro League you know uh we you know with gr Forks Red River and gr Forks Central but the the schools here in Fargo are just really good you know and uh and so the the league is really competitive and uh

And if you don’t line up and play uh one night you will get beat you know and then you throw in there Red River you know is still they’re they’re they’re gonna be fine by the end of the year they have to get some things figured out

Because they’ turned over a good group of kids from last year’s you know state championship you know second place finish and then Central is you know those kids have been playing now for three four years and so they got a really good squad you you look at your

Team here Bart you know Daniel and Alpha I know two guys that have played a ton of minutes in the back court for you have been in starters as well with Alpha his length and athleticism how how he can go up and get rebounds or deter

Shots what have you seen from those two in particular here early on in the season well you know they’re they’re Athletic kids and you know and and uh they have done a lot of uh good things for us I would say that you know um they’re both have been a little bit

Inconsistent you know they’ll have a great game and then they’ll have a a decent game and so we kind of need to start to find a little bit of of more consistent play from some of our guys including those two and if we can get some of that consistent play from you

Know individuals on a daily night you know and just and that’s why I kind of talked about the beginning you know those kids too Dan and elf are trying to figure things out and you know trying to find their way a little bit also right now and so um but more than capable

Really good players have the ability to play at a high level and uh you know we’re just waiting to try to get humming here a little bit into January as you uh kind of allude to my next Point here uh Bart what’s the one thing from your

Point of view from a coaching staff whether it’s from The Freshman all the way up to University what are you talking uh through your staff and with your players once you get to this portion of the schedule when you flip that calendar over knowing the dog dayss of basketball are coming right it’s

Going to still be late January early February you feel like the dedc tournament should be closer than what it is but then all of a sudden boom you blink and then it is the end of February but when you kind of get to that stretch

It kind of feels like the the long Dog Days of the season so what are you talking with your staff and with your players once you kind of get to this point of the Year well you know like you kind of said you know December basketball everybody’s fun to get

Started and you know and and you’re ready to get going and then all a sudden you get into January and typically it’s a a little bit colder out than what we’ve had and you know I’m going to knock on wood there too because we’d like to keep that weather going but um

January is a hard month uh January is definitely uh you know where some teams you know plateau and they’re in that Plateau they don’t you know get any better at that time and then you know and some teams are moving P past that plateau and starting to really you know

Kick it into gear into February you know and they always talk like in the NFL you know like uh the teams who who kind of win it start to kick it in about Thanksgiving and you know they really win in November and December and you know January kind of sets set up for

February and so you want to start to try to play better basketball by the middle of January and it’s hard sometimes because like you said you know you got a gauntlet of games and you’re on the road a little bit more sometimes during that time period and and uh you know and so

It’s tough It’s a tough especially with our league there’s going to be some teams taking some losses and uh and you got to work through those things you know and keep working towards you know end of February and March and then when people get excited about basketball

Again as a basketball fan here Bart how much fun was it to go back to minet or or have teams from the wda coming out east early on the season or yourself playing some games know against those wda teams we just really haven’t seen that a lot with as you alluded to

Earlier with the two divisions a lot of teams from the East played maybe a Morehead or maybe got one game against the Western team and that was pretty much it you know for their non-conference games how much fun has that been to see that back in the double

Eight this season here in basketball well I you know uh there hasn’t been a team in the EDC that hasn’t um everyone’s lost the game and uh part of it is because our non-conference schedules are a lot better than they have been in the past uh the crossover

Games have been really good for our state and then also you know some teams are are heading to Minnesota to play to some really good teams out in Minnesota and uh you know later on in the year we’ll be playing Alex who is you know loaded this year with a couple good

Players too and so I think the level of play is even going to go up in our league because of even the teams that you’re playing in your non-conference schedule you know for us getting a chance to go back to Min not and uh you

Know and uh it was it was really kind of a a special place you know uh for me growing up and playing a lot of games um you know in Minette and and having the success that we had in Minette it was fun to go back I we haven’t been back to

Minette to play since 2014 when we won it in the state tournament and so it’s been almost 10 years since I’ve even been back to mind to even you know play another game and so it was great to see everybody I knew it was great to play at

Min high again uh you know shot a lot of baskets in in that gym and so uh I wish we would have played a little bit better but that’s the way things go sometimes and you know and you got to just kind you know move on from that and and try

To work to get better this week because we got a gauntlet of games coming up with uh north south on Friday North on the next Tuesday on the 9th and then cheyen on the 12th and so we got a tough little stretch here coming up final thing for you Bart before he let

You go what’s a trait that you want to see from this team as the season continues and as you mentioned going through some pretty stingy squads here in the EDC for your next handful of games well you know I just the the word that I would say is rhythm we got to

Just start getting some Rhythm and uh you know we’re we’re kind of just struggling with some Rhythm offensively right now and defensively and so you know when once you get that Rhythm and you get that you know where everybody’s figuring out what to do and things like

That then I think you can start to see you can move forward for as a basketball team but we haven’t found that yet and so we need to keep searching for that and see if we can find our Rhythm Bart as always thanks so much for your time

Happy New Year and best of luck to you and the crew here as we continue through the month of January thanks a lot all right have a good day that again Bart Manson head coach the Fargo Davies Eagles will continue after this on our coaches show live work and play here in

Hillsboro North Dakota the Hillsboro Economic Development Committee can assist you with information and a support for business and housing experience Hillsboro more at 104 on the your live event coaches show talking with Mayport CG headboys basketball coach Taylor conle as we’re in the holiday break right now and uh uh

We’re going to resume action here uh and the new year uh with some games coming up we’ll talk about that a little bit later but uh coach first of all thanks for the time hope you’ve had a good holiday season yes thank you thanks for

Having me on yeah it was a it was a good holiday season so far yeah and uh for your boys uh off to a one and four start through the first five games of the year kind of a tough start and one win and four losses none of those games have

Been in single digits so um definitely some things to work on I’m sure uh your thoughts going into the new year on on the trajectory of the boys yeah we’re uh we’re struggling a little bit right now uh Midway Mento came down and uh they played well against us and and we you

Know we turned the ball over too many too many times uh you know we’re still trying to figure each other out at this point you know we’re not um it’s it’s a bunch of uh guys that have played together and uh or that have not played together so

They’re trying to figure out what each other’s doing um and whatnot so we got a lot of stuff to figure out but hopefully this break gives us a little bit of time and and going into Barnes County tournament we should uh you know we actually play Maple River again which

They’re going to be tough um just like always are um so yeah we’ve we’ve got a lot of stuff to figure out but we’ll we’ll get the boys there boys want to work hard boys want to get better so it’s yeah I imagine Taylor that’s uh

That that’s a positive that the at least the attitude and the energy is still present with the boys correct yeah yeah it’s uh you know it’s tough you start you start one and four but you know you look at the teams we played and it’s you know it’s Grafton and Thompson which

Obviously two very two very good teams cavaliere team very tough and and Midway Mento team that’s very tough so um you know I’m glad at the end of the day none of those games count towards our district um you know there a couple region games in there but um you know nothing really

Hurts us at this point in time and we’re still figuring stuff out so um you know we after break we got to get things going a little bit which uh I I believe we will you got a nice balance as far as your roster concerned seniors juniors sophomores freshman even even an eighth

Grader I believe on the squad your thoughts on how they’re all helping each other to be the best players they can be yeah I mean uh our seniors are going to lead um you know and then we we look to them to lead um and we actually don’t

Have any we have a junior that is dresses for Varsity but hasn’t played in two years uh we have one sophomore that dresses and then we’ve got a slew of of freshman so five five freshman um so when you look at it you know the the starting lineup is you know

Four four seniors and or three seniors a sophomore and and a freshman well that’s you know that’s just shows that we’re um we’re very young at times so when we when we have you know three freshmen on the floor at times and an eighth grader

Um that it can be a little tough so uh it’s just about gaining those guys the confidence in those guys I think I think as the season moves forward um they’re just going to gain more and more confidence with each other um but right now we’re there’s there’s going to be

Some growing pains and that’s kind of where we’re at right now I have no doubt that we’ll turn it around though as we look ahead towards 2024 uh obviously you start out with the uh Barnes County tournament we’ll have the full tournament broadcasted on your live event.com including the Bayport CG

Boys contest what are you hoping to see from the boys win or loss out of that tournament honestly I hope we just play loose we’ve played so tight and we’re afraid to make mistakes everywhere right now um so I think that uh if we just play uh just end up playing basketball

You know sound sound offense sound defense um hoping for some guys to step up you know and hopefully we do the things we talk about um but yeah at the end of the day we just we just need to play loose and have fun as we look again

Look beyond the Barnes County tournament in 2024 you mentioned that really haven’t had a chance to face off against your region opponents you had of course with a new three class system everything changed your thoughts on the region you have this year and maybe some of the matchups uh you’re looking forward to

Yeah it’s our our region is very tough obviously you got uh kind of the top dogs right now in Northstar and um but then you know you kind of look at look at everything else and it’s it’s it’s wild you know I’ve been watching scores pretty closely and it’s you know hat

Northwood goes to Warwick and and you know langan’s playing tough and all these different region teams are are doing a lot of really good things so uh uh we’re going to get there like I said but it’s going to be a fun region regionals districts it’s going to be fun

I’ve never been a part of the district process so uh that’s going to be a lot a lot of fun too that that atmosphere that I’ve that I’ve heard a lot about but I’ve never been actual part of it we’ve always been super region region two um

So I’m excited about it it’s gonna beot a lot of fun uh coach anything else you want to mention about Mayport CG boys basketball heading into 2024 no I don’t think so that’s a head coach Taylor Con joining us on the year live event coaches show again we’ll have

The full Barnes County boys basketball tournament uh coming up uh here first weekend in January uh and uh that includes the map Port CG boys games Maple River Course on schedule then after that we’ll see how it goes so coach thanks for the time and best of

Luck the rest of the season thank you very much all right we’ll break here for the a live event coaches portion and uh we’ll start our year end interview on car JB radio here in 3 two one on our year end segments on krjb RJ broadcasting news uh James Martins

Please be joined by uh the interim High School principal at Bayport CG and Taylor conle and uh uh Taylor it’s been an an up and down year lots of challenges uh and lots of I’m sure positive things uh that come uh at bport CG School this year uh kind of with me

First of all the positives that you take away from 2023 yeah there’s there’s a lot of positives um you know we’ve obviously uh our students are are positive you know we have um got so many good things going on in the school with uh different things the teachers are doing and um and

Kind of just a a good atmosphere with our students um yeah it’s been it’s it’s been uh really good getting you know stepping into this role in the last two months it’s it’s been a lot of fun to see the the kind of different side of

Things um you know and see uh just see it from a education from a different perspective you mentioned education from a different perspective uh uh I know it wasn’t your plan obviously toh step into this role at at the start of the year but uh um your thoughts on on embracing

Uh that new role here this year yeah it’s been great um obviously stepping into the role kind of apprehensive to do so mid year but uh it’s been great I had you know had a number of other administrators that have reached out to me and and and offered help when I when

I needed it and um you know we’ve got a really great area um to to kind of feed off uh different schools and and and whatnot so I’ve been very fortunate that way but it’s no our our teachers are are great to mport CG people here um from the office to you

Know the the custodial staff are just just phenomenal people um so very fortunate very lucky to be a part of a part of the school and as we look ahead in this uh you know unique situation you never want to have it happen this way obviously but uh um what’s 2024 look

Like atap Port CG as far as as the process are you going to stay in that role uh for the next for the rest of the school year or what’s the process like for uh the next principal mport CG yeah it’s uh so right now it’s uh as you

Mentioned I have the interim principal um title at this point but yeah I’ll be in for the for the remainder of this school year um I do have a long-term sub because I was the history teacher obviously that uh I do have a long-term sub there and um ultimately ultimately

It’s up to the the school board Mayport CG to uh decide how they want to proceed with everything and from your chair from your perspective Taylor what do you hope to uh what do you hope to accomplish if that’s right right word what do you hope that uh your contributions will be in

2024 for mport CG High School yeah I think um anytime you look at education it’s it’s whatever’s best for our our students and I hope our students get um uh the best education they can um and that there there’s a positive safe learning environment for our students

And uh they feel welcomed and and loved and cared about um and that uh I mean really that’s it when you’re talking education you know what’s what’s the what’s best for our students and and how are we going to do that and um I think our our staff here does a does a

Phenomenal job in that aspect and just to take a look again between 2023 and 2024 of course the biggest highlight I would think from 2023 is perspective is girls volleyball making it to the uh state championship match first time in in a long time that they’ve uh made it

That far uh any other highlights from clubs organizations uh classes that you want to highlight from 2023 yeah we’ve um you know you could you could look at a number of different things from speech to to our one act play going to state to um to all all the

Different uh organizations that we have you know we have our our F FCCLA and our fbl um organizations that are that are competing at Nationals and state levels and um you know we have so many good things going on um but yeah we’ve you know 2023

Um was great our girls softball team our girls basketball team competing our boys basketball competing um so um yeah we’ve we’re we’ve definitely been had a very good year in 2023 and uh we expect great things in 20124 as well 2024 uh Taylor anything else you want to mention about

The upcoming year anything any other changes that are coming to mport CG in 2024 whether it’s classes or activities or or anything else you want to mention here on our year- end segments no I don’t think there’s too many changes uh you know you kind of have the

Schedule set up um I actually came to my office this morning to to get some student schedules plugged in for them so you know classes will be changing you know it’ll be electives will change a little bit um but um not not too many different changes are going to happen um

Uh you know we’ll go like there to be some different activities this spring uh such as the I’ll take a closeup group to Washington DC New York um and just just the other fun things you know spring gets chaotic you have golf going everywhere and softball going everywhere

And baseball and track and and so it gets gets a little crazy but um but then you have different other organizations that are happening at the same time you know so fbl State and uh FCCLA state so it’s it’s going to be a fun chaotic spring semester that I’m

Really looking forward to that’s the room High School principal mport CG Taylor conl joining us in our krjb RJ broadcasting news year end segments and uh we hope to follow up with each other at the end of the school year and uh we’ll keep a close eye on the school

Board and see what the decision process is but I think they got a a great candidate at least to step into that role for uh the short term so uh Taylor thanks for the time and uh uh have a good 2024 yes thank you very much you you as

Well all right perfect that’s awesome appreciate that appreciate the flexibility the transparency that’s uhh what we’re here for to just uh you know make sure that uh you guys get a spotlight and uh um you know anything you want to mention gets out there so awesome so all right Taylor well I

With Isaac heru from the Detroit Lakers talking about his commitment to University of North Dakota football but first up is Brad Wale The kred Vikings boys basketball team as Kindred is off to a 5-0 start on this season joining us now from the Kindra Vikings he is the head coach for the

Boys basketball team that is Brad well as the Vikings off to a nice start on the season here of 5 and0 and they got some good games coming up this weekend on your live event as they host the won Huskies on Friday and travel to Thompson

On Saturday Brad Happy New Year to you a number one and number two uh so far five games obviously five wins but I’m sure like any basketball coach whether you’re 5-0 3 and2 or something in between there’s always things to work on as you get to the month of January here Brad

Exactly and happy New Year to you chase as well um yeah it’s kind of before we got on the air some of the things we’ve talked about it seems like this point of the Season that the defense is a little bit ahead of the offense I think that is

Certainly the case uh for us um we’re holding teams down to 40 points a game uh which which we like that um so the defensive end is really kind of what we’ve uh um been doing well uh offense is starting to come uh we’re becoming a

Little bit uh more efficient so we’re uh hoping that improves as well throughout the season as you kind of get to this time of the year Brad whether you got a team that brings back you know seven six seniors or Varsity players or another year where maybe it’s only three or four

And you’re you’re mashing some guys guys to find different roles what about the month of January do you enjoy most about coaching or is it January is a tough month to get through because the start of the season’s behind you you’re still ways away from tournament time how do

You look at the month of January here Brad from a coach’s perspective well I think every coach likes the month of January I know it’s it’s a long month it seems like there’s not many breaks in the in the school calendar uh but I I think this is kind of when you start

Putting the pieces together and uh starting to really improve your basketball team and obviously work on those weaknesses Brad we before we talk about some of your guys here anything surprised you early on with the new three divisions three classes when you’re seeing some box scores I know

Doublea’s kind of playing maybe some Minnesota schools or they’re playing more East West you still get a and b with some of those Rivals that were there before playing against each other or getting those non- region games but anything surprised you early on from a a portion on the boys side

Well I guess this is isn’t really surprising but I think it’s going to be a very very competitive division it seems like every single night uh you better be ready to play uh or you’re going to get beat so I I think that’s what’s going to make our division very

Exciting I know it’s a smaller division um with the amount of teams but uh a lot of high quality teams and a lot of parody once again and you talk about parody here won comes into town on Friday they just knocked off Central C by a handful of points Central C and

Hillsboro Central Valley went to overtime to your point Brad uh when you take a look at some of these new teams that maybe you haven’t played before is it more challenging from a coach’s perspective or are you still on the worry about okay let’s just worry about

Us maybe we’ll figure out who we need to stop or what they kind of do offensively how do you kind of look at it when you go up against the wton which is a team that you haven’t traditionally played in the regular season well I think their physicality is

One thing that sticks out I mean they used to be playing um the Davies and and the EDC which is a very physical uh league so I think that is something they uh they present as as a possible problem um and um you know they’re going to have

Good players um I was very impressed with them the last two games that I watched them uh very good at the guards so it’s certainly going to be a test for us Brad uh this year just a couple of seniors on your team uh it was good to

See obviously in game number one Riley sunram you know coming back for you guys after missing out of last year just talk about some of those seniors and and the upper class what do they provide this season to kred Viking basketball well Riley uh is just

Starting to get into the flow of the game um many people have to understand that he hasn’t played competitive basetball for a year uh and his body has certainly uh changed over the course of that year uh so we’re H Hing to to get him

Improved uh get him in the flow of the game early um and I think uh this month is going to be an important month for him and he’s a he’s an inside presence I mean he’s 67 280 um and he moves fairly well for his

Size um and he can step out and shoot it a little bit which which we like as well Ryan Davis is a kid we’re bringing Off the Bench uh he certainly could start for some teams I I believe um he just seems like he is in the right place at

The right time he does a little bit of everything he can shoot it he can rebound he’s a good Defender and we also bring off Owen hyy he’s kind of a spark for us uh good Defender can hit the three hustles works very hard all the

Time when he gets his opportunity on the floor Brad how vital is it to have whether it’s one senior two seniors guys to understand their roles that you know obviously everybody wants to start everybody wants to play 32 minutes but at the end of the day there’s only one

Basketball and you as a coach you’re trying to put the best five whether it’s to start or throughout the game you know on the floor that are meshing together how invaluable is it to you as a coach having some seniors you know coming off the bench that have been in your program

For quite some time well the two seniors that have come off the bench have just done a great job accepting their role we had a little conversation prior to the season um we have a chart that we use as far as what the role is for the sixth and

Seventh man A lot of times those two individuals play as much as a starter um and we also talked about don’t be so worried about uh your starting role make sure uh we have finishers and the finishers at the end of a game can be that sixth and seventh man Brad uh Jake

Staric I know it’s been while documented coming from Thompson and Kinder but anytime someone gets to a th career points it’s nice to kind of you know recognize them and honor them so let’s just talk about Jake and what he’s provided through you know five games so

Far this season to you guys hitting that Milestone yeah is a fierce competitor and he’s tough he’s physical he’s gritty and I think that’s just something we were kind of missing a year ago so he provides that for us um we try to put him on probably the off offensive uh or

The opponent’s best offensive player um and we like what he’s has done so far he’s just uh averaging right under 10 points a game um but he just provides that toughness for us last thing for you Brad before we get moving and maybe was something you already hit on a little

Bit as we kind of get into the dog digs if you will of January basketball before he get to February here in the regular season what’s a Trader characteristic through five games that you want to see your team continue you know as we get a little bit closer to the month of

February well one of the things that we talked about uh to start the season was sharing the basketball and I think our entire coaching staff is very pleased with what we’re doing in that category we’re averaging around 16 assists a game we got three guys in double figur and

Other guys like 9.5 points per game so I think that is something that we tried to emphasize uh throughout the course of the season and hopefully that continues Brad thanks mon your time best of luck moving forward throughout this week here against wton and Thompson and throughout

The rest of the season sounds good thanks Chase for having me on that again Brad whale head coach of the Kinder Vikings boys basketball team will continue on our coaches show after this live work and play here in Hillsboro North Dakota the Hillsboro Economic Development Committee can assist you with information and a

Support for business and housing experience Hillsboro more at 104 Isaac heru from Detroit Lakes joins us now for our senior Spotlight and Isaac congratulations first and foremost we see the T-shirt there you’re heading off to University of North Dakota coming up uh let’s just talk about your commitment

When you ass signed the dotted line said you’re officially going to coach Bubba schwier Grand Forex North Dakota uh take us through just kind of the emotions and everything that was built into that to know that you’re heading off to play division one football well you know um I used to live

Up in gr forks and I got a lot of family up there so it was kind of a decision to like get back home and their coaching staff like especially my position coach you know he’s a really great guy seems like he develops guys really well and really just seemed like the best

Opportunity for me when you kind of go through the recruiting process here Isaac uh just you know what made UND as you alluded to already maybe being going back home so to speak but what what other things kind of attributed to your decision to head to University of North Dakota from a football

Standpoint um well versus like division one versus division two I wanted like the best opportunity for myself and to challenge myself as much as I can and you know I just had a lot of people behind me with that with that college and the coaching staff is great like I

Said and they know what they’re doing with guys as you kind of take a look at your your time on the football field with Detroit Lakes what’s something from the coaches what’s something from your teammates that you will hope to take with you up to Grand Forks coming up for college

Football I would say that a big a big like focal point of our football team was that like you might not might not start with like an advantage you might you probably start a disadvantage but like just work your way to the top and

Like be the best you can as you take a look back a favorite sports memory to this point Isaac whether it’s on the football field maybe it’s with family and friends going to a game what’s a couple of sports memories that come to mind that you know list uh at the top for

You I would say a big one was like a sophomore year playoff win that you know we necessarily weren’t supposed to get and then just like the team meals with my guys the day before a game gotta get close before you go to war with them as

You go back through what would be some advice that you would like to send down for a 14 15y old who maybe is going to be in what your shoes were just a few years ago here Isaac you know chopping at the bit waiting again on the varsity

Level maybe going through camps to try to you know become a college uh athlete in their own right Isaac what would be some words of advice that you would like to pass down I would say that you just gota you got to do things that people don’t

Normally want to do and you like you got to separate yourself from everybody else and I mean get up earlier than them you got to work harder than them go more than them like you just got to do more superstitious did you have to do anything before you got to kick off on

Friday nights no honestly I didn’t have any superstitions it was just kind of be there with the guys and go and play was there anything on warm-ups with the the team that were superstitious when it came to those team meals on Thursday or was it pretty much same thing let’s just

You know get to the football field and put the ball on the te pretty much yeah I mean fill up tables make sure you’re talking but it was just same routine every Friday for sure as you go up to you and D um Isaac uh what’s something

That you look to forward to studying a little bit what made you know UND from that standpoint from the school standpoint what is one of two things that you look forward to kind of getting your hands dirty so to speak freshman year once you hit the

Bcks um well I wanted to get into something medical and I know that’s like a supposed to be really good medical school so that was a big part of it too and yeah I mean I like I like like the biology classes so I’ll be excited for

That for sure take us through offensive lineman uh a technique at the guard spot uh what’s a what’s a drill what’s a what’s something in practice that you enjoyed most during your time with Detroit Lakes at that guard spot well I in high school I played I

Played tackle and even then like any opportunity I could get to pull that was definitely my favorite for sure so you like to kind of able to clear the way for your running backs or for your quarterbacks there coming on that counter or that pole um is is there a

Big difference to you Isaac when you go through these camps as an offensive lineman we hear so many times that you have to know a little bit how to play center or guard or tackle they’re kind of similar but they’re a little bit different in how they have their

Techniques what’s the biggest difference for you from a tackle to a guard in terms of camps or you know playing on Friday nights when you maybe did have an opportunity to play at a different position or or talking with guys you know throughout the game or throughout the

Season for sure with the camps I went to I wasn’t going to go out there and try to play tackle because like the tackles are trying to recruit are 65 66 68 type thing but guard and Center you know they’re similar obviously Center you gota know how to stap the ball but I

Mean being a guard in Center you just gota play like your head’s cut off like you just got to go is it something better in terms of pass protecting is it better to kind of have that Crackdown block like you talked about open up a lane for the running uh what do you

Enjoy most about an offensive lineman when it comes to either pass Pro or just going out and trying to you know open up a lane for the guys running behind you I for sure like run blocking a lot but in High School playing tackle it’s kind of a it’s kind of like satisfying

Almost I’d say to get a block because you’re kind of out on an island with a defensive end you don’t got necessarily help outside of you so to make that block as big for sure final thing for you Isaac what does it mean to be a Detroit Lakes football player knowing

That you’re G to keep the tradition going a little bit you know after your time obviously up at the University of North Dakota for sure like like getting your school out there hopefully that like kids younger than me are like on a line now where it’s like recruiting is easier

For them they get know what it’s easier and just like keep a legacy alive in DL for sure Isaac thanks so much for your time happy holidays and best to you moving forward at the University of North Dakota thank you that does it for our edition of your live event.com coach
