Uh what’s up guys welcome to another episode of The Fitness business University podcast uh I’ve been doing the I was just talking to Adam before this but I’ve been doing this podcast for almost five years now and I’ve been asked uh you know how you get those
Emails where people say hey I got a really good guest for your podcast uh yeah I’ve been getting those emails for about five years and um I still say no to everybody but I did want to start a little series of of guests uh as you
Guys know last month was Ari wanwig the founder of zingerman uh Deli uh and this month I have Adam lincol arer who is one of my favorite people in the world not not just favorite business people one of favorite people um and uh I’m super excited uh to start this conversation
But these um podcasts are really all about me leveraging my uh time in the industry I was just telling Adam I’ve got 20 years in the industry now so I’ve made some friends along the way and and it’s really cool to see like I can look around and you know very quickly just
Text someone hey do you want to be a guest on the podcast and have a pretty highle person on the other line um so it’s really really awesome to see but uh I’m super excited about this conversation with Adam um we’re I’m gonna have him tell his story but uh
Adam thank you so much for doing this I appreciate it brother well then absolutely my pleasure moment you mention it I’m like there absolutely because of our relationship you’re also one of my favorite people in the world as well um and no it’s an absolute honor
To be here and I’m ready to to share share share so let me let me know what the what the chat about and I will run my mouth I it’s funny I really I haven’t done a lot of interview podcasts I really uh where I’m doing like asking the questions and I love
Them like I can see why guys like Tim Ferris and and these guys that do that for a living pretty much it’s really like I just like sit here and get to learn you know and talk to really cool people so I I might be actually end up
Doing more of these um if you’re one of those people that asked me to be on the podcast you’re probably not gonna get on sorry so if I come to you you’ll probably get on but if you come to me there’s a good chance I don’t know maybe
Um but anyway Adam give us like just you know because you’re in the fitness industry but you’re not in the gym owner space I know you have a lot of experience with the the dysfunctional degenerates that we are as gym owners um you’ve been around us uh for a long time
Um but just give us the your brief you know background of your origin story and what what brought you to where you are today absolutely it’s one of those um like Mike High School scenarios where I um started out as not a great athlete uh
You know I went out for the Trap Team wanted to be a high jumper they said no you’re going to run the mile that’s just where they stuck all the the non-athletic uh folks I guess to like wean them off of track and field forever but long story short couple years go by
I quit the team didn’t didn’t do track at all quit the team uh one of the coaches saw me dunking a basketball my junior year said come out for high jump um like middle of the season three three or four weeks later I was a state
Champion I had jumped 610 I was an All-American um absolutely just insane um you know series of events that occurred for a you know 15 to 16 year old at that time um got recruited ended up winning a national championship three-time All-American in high school got recruited went to Clemson became a
High jumper or was a high jumper there seven time ACC Champion um you know thought I was going to be an Olympian that was my goal was the Beijing Olympics came up short didn’t make the team so I then decided hey if I can’t accomplish my big goal and dream I’m
Going to help others accomplish theirs there’s a brand new website um you know this would have been probably about 20 2007 when I first started uh going to this new website called YouTube um there was YouTube and viddler at the time I’m not sure evince if you remember viddler
But they were kind of the they were competing um fortunately I went with YouTube and started putting out videos teaching people to jump um had a a lot of success through a lot of learning it took about three years to actually start making money um doing that um you know
If you 100 videos as a matter of fact on jumping and um from there it started to take off and then I realized my entire audience were not high jumpers they were basketball players wanting to dunk a basketball because my my entire channel was on jumping so I decided then to
Bring in basketball coaches expand and you know another fast series of events a year later year and a half later um we were near a million subscribers and um had the number one basketball training uh business on online in the world and it’s been like that ever since so it’s
Been like that I believe for going on 11 years now so um from there others started noticing that hey Adam did it and you know I just was looking at YouTube a little bit differently than everyone else so I started helping other people um I built the number two biggest
Basketball uh Channel and online business called shop mechanics with uh an upcoming uh you know competitor that I saw as someone that checked all the boxes um then went over and did it again in yoga and and baseball and in golf and uh hockey and goal hockey goalies and um
Business channels and you know uh ever since about 2013 I’ve been either doing Equity Partnerships um Consulting deals or running an agency that just builds channels and online businesses for coaches Consultants Etc and um yeah then I I have a deep partnership with with a few of my my former clients turned
Partners like athletic motion golf which that’s maybe we’ll talk more about maybe not but yeah yeah so I I tried to keep it short but it it never is with me so I apologize no that was amazing and I think that the uh the cool thing is that
You and one of the reasons why I had you speak at The Mastermind uh this was probably about two years ago I think you came up and did a did a talk on YouTube but the title of the seminar that I don’t know if you remember this but the title of the
Seminar was called Authority muscle building right and the whole seminar was really built around helping gym owners create and become an authority and when I thought of that topic I was like oh my God there’s no one that has built a bigger Authority within YouTube within and not
Just YouTube but really with with with basketball players and teaching them you know how to jump so um one of the reasons why I want to speak with you have you on is your vast array of of business knowledge and that’s why we’re going to unpack I have a lot of
Different questions for you um you know today but can you take us back to when you started in YouTube and specifically that I love your first business right this and this is the thing I see Adam and I think you’ll agree with me there’s a lot of people out there that look at
Some guy like you and like oh my God he’s a serial entrepreneur he has all these things he has all these Investments and all these things going on but it wasn’t like that when you started right you started by building one damn really good business called I love basketball right and that’s what
You built it on right so just take us back to that point from the start to the Finish because a lot of people they got one gym and they got one mediocre gym and then they want to start investing in everything all so take us back to of
Basketball and what was some of those beginning stories and moments that got you to this level where you can become who you are today absolutely no that’s fantastic and I I see it now more than ever and what the way that you know fortunately for me when I first started
My Channel I didn’t have the aspirations to be a coach at that point now I went on I became a coach at Virginia Tech for a year realized it wasn’t my thing but I’m so thankful that I went into YouTube with one goal and that was to help
People it wasn’t to impress my peers it wasn’t to compete with others it was me and them um me and my audience that was where my brain was the entire entire time and I see so many people when they’re looking at Authority they mistake Authority for training or
Teaching or coaching at such a high level it is meant to impress their peers versus help the target a audience so that is what I did first was I started with helping the target audience now I’ve you know I love basketball has become a smaller part of what I do but
Nothing is that was the the tree trunk for me right because the reason everyone came to me to grow everyone that I’m I’m working with now came to me to build YouTube channels build businesses around social media online uh content is because they saw how good I love
Basketball did so I didn’t have to start a new business or new YouTube channel of how to grow YouTube channels like a lot of folks do in the industry I was showcasing that hey I did it at a very very high level almost like a franchise model where I I had the perfect
Franchise and then when people started coming to me that’s when I made the decision to venture out and start doing channels using a framework system that I had developed over years of focusing solely on that one thing and again I mean I I had my Consulting I mean I had
Been on YouTube at a number one spot for six years five or six years before I began Consulting again 07 to 2013 before I helped anyone and that was where my focus was and that would be my biggest advice to anyone is start with doing what you’re doing at a very very high
Level and the opportunities will either come to you or you’ll eventually be in a position where it’s a no-brainer to to look at other options other opportunities when you were launching I love basketball and you know I knew you back in the day I mean we were in masterminds
Together shoot this probably like 2010 or something a long time ago you know and you were always really smart then but you’re not like you know you weren’t in you weren’t in the position you’re in today back then right when I knew you what were some of the I’m just I’m I’m
Asking asking this question selfishly for a lot of gym owners that listen to this that and again it doesn’t matter whether you’re running a YouTube channel whether you’re running a gym you’re a businessman I look I look at you as a businessman not a YouTube guy like you’re a businessman right what were
Some of the things that were challenging that you had to break through the hurdles that you had to break through in growing I love basketball take us back to that thing is or something specific I I also think like probably in that there’s algorithm changes there’s things that are
Happening all the time right what were some of the things that you had to to break through because one of the things and I’m I’m sorry this a long question but I just observe you very closely and one of the things that I’ve observed about you is that you’re a mindset guy
Like you’re a mindset guy you think about like that you know that that you’re a mindset so talk us about some of the maybe challenges you’ve had and what was the mindset that you had to have to break through those challenges yeah know I’ve fortunate or unfortunate
To be in the the time frame that when we first started in business to now because the the mental shifts that have occurred have been kind of really mindblowing when I first started you couldn’t go to a web page builder and click a few buttons and have a web page you had to
Either pay someone to code a website or you had to learn to code a website which is what I did I’d go to the bookstore get books or I would sit in a bookstore take pictures on a digital camera of pages um and then go home and try to
Implement by the computer each of these steps um the information did not exist um at least not uh the depth of information of how to build an online business or what a YouTube algorithm is or anything like that so back then I had to and this has been a recurring theme
Of my life is I put my mind to something and it will eventually come true for me um even if and I think it starts me mentally my mentality is if I convince myself that what I’m doing is working it will work for me better than anything um
First time I was uh you know dunk the basketball my goal is to dunk a basketball I was in a weight room doing things that would make your you and your audience probably scream with frustration but in my brain and fortunately I didn’t hurt myself but in
My brain this is working so it’s going to work and I believe that’s such a a core concept that we struggle with now more than ever to kind of Bring It full circle now information is is everywhere now we’ve gone from a lack of information to Too Much Information it’s
A matter of pointing at the right opportunity or picking the right bone a dog with too many bone struggles so what I recommend now and what helped me then so much is one I figured out the best way for me and I ignored everything else it was easy back then but now I
Have the exact same strategy and mindset um I I have two coaches that I then that’s all I keep in align for I have a head coach and I have a skill coach so a head coach is someone that I work directly with and I don’t have any other
Coaches I don’t have any other other information that that um I’m actionable I will continue to learn non-stop but I’m actionable on and then I have an what I call a skill coach which is someone that is teaching me a specific skill or my team a specific skill at a
Specific time but I never have two head coaches um and a head coach can be a person but it can also be information sources um so I think focus and finding a system that you truly believe in and believe is working for you is the most dangerous combination but then if you
Can actually find a system that would work at scale for anyone and it’s the right system combined with the right mentality combined with Focus that is an easy easy winning formula um it’s hard to be I look at focus is the opposite of being distracted right how and like I
Said I told to Adam I sent him a couple questions I was going to ask but I’m not even G to look at the questions like we’re just gonna talk for an hour and I think there’s going to be some big big things learned from the audience so um
I’m so excited to be doing this but let’s talk about that let’s talk about focus and avoiding distractions I I believe that and you know I know that the times that I’m focused or I’m sitting down I’m time blocking work I’m doing the things I need to do that
Things all of a sudden just move in the right direction and when I’m unfocused they don’t how do you get and stay focused oh man well I’m you know I am ADHD um so it’s something I’ve struggled with not only am I ADHD but I have a
Reading disability to where when I read I see words in my brain I don’t see what the words mean so I have had to learn Focus as a main driver and for me it comes back to athletically learning that when I focus on something I get the
Result that I’m after but when I don’t focus on it I don’t unfortunately that’s what happened to me multiple times in my athletic career that led to big wins and you know in my mind I look back at these you know almost like a treasure maps so
I know it works and that helps me so much continue to do what I do because I’ve done it and I know it works but now if you’re someone that either isn’t sure or you’re you know uh fearful about whether something’s not going to work or
Not um I think that it starts with actually you know educating yourself on what you are trying to do number one but then number two finding the system that you believe is best for you are they the steps that you believe that are best for you and then acally action um excuse me
Actionable steps to remove distraction I think is so so um um devalued or underestimated you know turning your phone on grayscale removing the colors from your phone will make you put down your phone so much more I love that I did I did it for like yeah I did it for
Like I I did it for I I can’t remember how long I did it for and then I put it back for some reason I don’t know why but yeah it was definitely like you can’t for those of you like that are thinking about Grays scale it’s like
There’s your apps are just one big like blob of colors right and uh then you put on Grays scale like you don’t Vanessa was telling me about it and she’s like you don’t want to you you don’t even want to play on your phone when when it’s grayscale it’s pretty funny oh it’s
Awful yeah it’s awful it makes you want to throw your phone but you know I love the phone for the career I have but I also hate the phone for the way it has you know kind of manipulated my brain um but you know using like for example busy
Cal is a tool that will actually pop up in front of you when you have you know a notification instead of it being something where you have to check your calendar it will pop to the front of your device and more or less smack you
In the face so I use that with block scheduling to where I’m not focusing on every business every day I have different days for each business and different subsets uh blocks and then I you have to commit to it um so when you know when the next block occurs I’m
Going to wrap up what I’m doing take a little breather and jump immediately into the next business or the next block of time whatever it may be so I think it’s finding a system that works for you but most importantly it’s having a system versus waking up every day saying
What am I going to work on today so I have a question for you about this so I was at a seminar in Florida this weekend and one of the things I heard is that the time that you have the most progress in your life is when you’re a
Child right you you think of how much progress you make when you’re two years old three years old four years old like the most progress in your entire life is when you and the guy was like the reason why that is is because you’re held accountable the whole time you have a
Parent you have a mom you have a dad you have a teacher you have a coach you have someone holding you accountable and you said something very interesting um you got to stick to it right you said you put something on a calendar but there’s no one over your shoulder Adam
Saying Adam you need to do your time block how do you hold yourself accountable I’m I I have had fortunately I’ve been kicked in my you know my pills Enough by not holding myself accountable that I’ve learned that if I truly want to be the person slown the businesses or
Make the steps that I want to make I have the fortunate ability in my mind to not do what I want to do versus what I need to do because I’ve learned that when I do that it makes more time in the future for what I want to do or more
Opportunities for what I want to do so I think it’s you know the the simple answer is I just I make sure to do it the secondary answer and I I did this for years is accountability Partnerships um making steps to where whether it’s a coach whether it’s you know right now
Even I have my assistant Mandy I wake up every day she knows has my blocks she gives me my exact tasks once those uh that block is over she ask me what I what I knocked out and she doesn’t you know it’s not like uh she’s scolding me
If I’m not doing my work but what by asking there’s a level of accountability that I recognize if I didn’t get what I was supposed to done so it comes back to to that system and structure um there are websites now where you can literally silently be accountable at the computer
When you’re working um have someone on another webcam and y’all’s job is to make sure each other is working um may be silly for for for some people may work for for a lot of people my assistant Mandy she does that she gets on these random websites with random
People and they work together so I think accountability and you know with with what you brought up accountability is key and if you can’t be self-accountable that’s perfectly fine I mean you know uh you’re you’re in the gym business if uh if accountability was not important I
Don’t know how well this the gym business would would do in comparison you know what I mean so I think having that ability to to go to and have someone that will you know uh walk you through your your day-to-day um mental and business workout for a lack of a
Better term is is valuable let’s St in this time block thing because um there’s a there’s one of the books there a great book that not a lot of people have heard of I think you’ve heard of it um there’s two series it’s called the old the the entrepreneurs guide to
Getting your together right guy named John Carlton right and he wrote there’s two series of the they’re phenomenal books they’re like probably the best business books that are the least read like because I John just I don’t think he gives a like he just doesn’t really push his stuff out right
But um there’s a lot in the book on the number one productivity tool in the world is time blocking right like if you want to be more productive you sit down with something very specific to do hopefully something that’s important and then you set a
Timer and then you do it I know it sounds simple so I’m going to ask you to elaborate on what you do that like is that it like what any any insight on the time blocking thing or I mean that’s that’s more or less it the you know I
Use a tool set that for that may be more for an ADH um ADHD mind to make sure please share it okay all right well here let me just uh let me just uh look here to make sure I tell you right so I was using um a tool called akif flow which
Was really really good for scheduling for calendar but it didn’t you know the term I’ll use is smack me in the face when I was on a desktop it would do a little notification but I need it to be in front of me so busy cow is what I use to
Byy busy cow is my favorite it’s nothing fancy you can there’s an app for the phone app for the desktop it will when you have something set it will smack you in your face now the problem with me is I’m not a I’m not a calendar person I’m not a write things
Down when I need to write them down person so for one of the best acts for this is a virtual assistant or some form of assistant that even if their their job is just to ask you periodically what they need to have on your calendar what
You need to be getting done and then they can organize this within busy cow within an AI flow or something of of that nature that would be incredibly valuable um the second piece and you you alluded to this is I’m really good at working on things
I enjoy I’m not so good at working on things I don’t enjoy so the ability to delegate or remove the things that you don’t enjoy don’t enjoy to the best of your ability will allow you to focus on items that you of course do enjoy or most important which for most of us
Those are looked at as maybe not enjoyable but it’s have we have to do them so I think delegations are really big key to this um if you can get rid of the stuff you don’t like don’t want to do and actually take the time to put a
System in place to delegate then from there you focus in a block I again I have a lot going on so we use a block scheduling um different businesses different days I’m only focusing on things that I’m actually I won’t say I enjoy at all I wish I could but things
That move the needle Andor things that I enjoy for each business yeah that’s interesting you say that that that’s I learned that from EOS my I was telling Adam before this the guy that runs EOS is guy named Marco Donnell who’s my adviser for five years
Um he always says the he said the best time management tool is actually delegation so it kind of pretty much speaks to whatever you’re saying I think we can like start call this podcast add strategies for add people by two add people right um so let’s can we I want
To stay on how you this is gonna be turning into a total selfish podcast and I I see I see I see Tim Ferris do this all the time where he like he actually uh do you know who Eric Cressy is yes yes that’s so Eric Eric’s a friend of
Mine um but he was on Tim Ferris is podcast and it was like Ferris was just asking him questions about like his Hipp or or something it was just like it was like this big so I’m I have more questions for you on the focus thing I’m
Very interested and I do want to sh kind of Link this to a gym owner that may not have multiple companies I realize I have multiple companies just like you do um and I and I realize some of you listening to this may not have multiple
Companies um I think that’s okay I think just kind of you got to get from this want but you have multiple businesses and you say you have a specific day for each one and then there’s time blocks within each company talk about the the the mindset you use to set that system
Up um is there like a weekly plan that you set up like how does that how does that set yeah know that’s a great question and funny enough I like to tell people that will mention like how do you run so much at once I would argue it’s actually easier to run multiple
Businesses than it is one um because typically if you’re running one maybe you don’t have the team in place um to where with being able to run multiple businesses I have a team in place to where I’m really focused on the top tier of things and I’ve got folks that are
Doing the jobs that typically I would be I was doing in my first business so it’s actually um from an an output standpoint I find it to be easier now than when I was working when we first met you know over a decade ago um but saying that is
It takes organization and and Clarity and I didn’t have the the block schedule until probably about three years ago um it was when I took on another business and realized very quickly when I say took on another business I became a partner in that business and you know
Treated it like it was my own and I realized after I did that like oh wait a second um this is now becoming very difficult to manage and I’m being there for everyone at all times and different area codes and they’re thinking that I’m working the same hours they are and um
It was a mess it was just too much it was just the last Jinga brick on top that just caus things to F fumble over and fall um so what I did was I organized this calendar based on equivalency where each of these businesses would have the same amount of
Time per week I included a communication with each each of these the team members to let them know when my windows were but then I had Mandy again pop in and she was the the conduit the connection for any other hour of the week that they needed something she they would go to
Her and talk to her and then it would be passed on to me just so um the ADHD mind doesn’t get the best of me when a slack message comes in or a email comes in that’s frustrating or what whatnot so I had to truly block this out in a way
That um when I’m working on one business that is my only business and when I when we click that block schedule changes I’m working on the next business so my structure is I like to work in larger sections so three hours in the morning three hours um after lunch and then
Typically a one to thre hour period um end of day depending on and that that admittedly is a little bit of a catch all what happened today did something occur that I needed to pay attention to but you know if I were to use my business as example Mondays and
Thursdays the morning sections I love basketball Tuesdays and Fridays morning section athletic motion golf Mondays Wednesdays evening section Urban Bor and so on and then that way that catchall stays in place every day of the week five days um and then on weekends I’m typically available for for quick stuff
But I’m not available to work though I typically work um so that’s kind of the schedule as a as a that’s great and I think for people listening to this that own Jims it’s you know his business is your t so for example you could replace a of basketball with marketing right you
Could replace Urban Valor with sales followup and and everything like that so just you know take it and and shift it to your um contest you said something I’m loving this conversation by the way this is great um you said something really important that you said the key is organization and
Clarity let’s talk about Clarity um I think it’s one of the things that destroys people the most in business is just the lack of clarity um how do you know when you don’t have Clarity when it’s almost like a look now when whether it’s a part and it happens a lot
Especially in a partnership where they have a lot of trust and respect in you I would get a lot of yeses and like totally we got it but then the deliverable would be something completely off and not and at first I would say like maybe they not the the
Right partner for me maybe they don’t you know maybe they’re just not understanding you know and it was their fault but no it was my fault so Clarity for me was a learned action because the way I think and the way that I I tend to
Share my information it it has a lot of gaps I speak in a way that it makes sense to me but I’m not feeling it so to me it always starts with some form of sop style um stepbystep delivery of what are we trying to accomplish
How do we want to accomplish it and what are the steps to accomplish that action and then from there especially early on it’s that communication of allowing and making your your whether it’s a virtual assistant a partner whatever making it comfortable to work back and forth and and communicate
Because I think that’s a big issue I’ve seen when I go into other businesses I see my I see a team that’s afraid to ask questions and a team that’s uh uh fearful of you know um even filling in their own thoughts or ideas and and testing and trying things where if you
Can’t be if you’re not delivering Clarity then you have to you have to have a level of trust for the people who are doing the job it can’t it can it has to be one or the other ideally it’s both yeah I we have a line um that we use in
Our business called Clarity is kind and it’s just like when you lack Clarity you’re actually being unkind to other people and I think it’s that important right can you me um I don’t know if you’ve read Ringer’s book um have you ever read read any of Rob ringer stuff I
Don’t he’s got a a phenomenal book called million dooll habits and there’s a chapter on there in on relate and there that’s not the one by Brian there’s two books called million doll habits it’s not the one I believe Brian Tracy is the other one it’s it’s Rob
Ringer is the guy but there’s a there’s a there’s a chapter in there on relationships and it basically says all relationships that break down can be traced back to a lack of communication right and it’s just like that’s when we lack Clarity we’re not going to communicate well um but I think
One of the other things that I admire so much about you Adam is you know the vision that you have and I want to stay on Clarity right so there’s Clarity in tasks like Sops like you just described but I I think a lot of the guys that I
Work with struggle with Clarity on where they’re going and the vision right right and you are like you to me are like the ultimate Visionary entrepreneur like you always have a ton of things going on and from what I observe about you and the times that we’ve um chatted and talked and
Stuff there always seems to be a Clear Vision in place what advice do you have for people that are struggling with that meaning they don’t know what they want and they’re having trouble figuring it out um I would Map Quest it and what I mean by that is when you know before the
The times of the navigation system what did we do we would you know and again this is once we had computers and printers to be clear but we would go to map quest we would then print out the directions and typically it would be directions to to the city because once
You tried to figure out the exact address it was very difficult especially reading um instructions so my advice is always to pick a City versus an address and once you get to that City ask locals for help so what I mean again by that is
You know like all you need to do is know what direction you’re going to where where is that that realm of destination you know are you going to X address if you don’t know X address are you going to New Jersey so hey if you know that
You’re going to New Jersey you can go ahead and take care of 95% of the trip without even needing a map you know or any clear instruction then once you get closer you will have relationships you will have so much more knowledge about the where you’re heading where you can
Either talk to people or you’re going to get a lot of that information just like with Map Quest you drive to the city you then are going down the main strip and you see the road you want to take um you you don’t need the map anymore so that’s
How I view everything is I never know exactly where I’m going to end up but I always know the direction I’m driving that is freaking awesome that’s probably one of the best answers to that question I’ve ever heard of that that was absolutely phenomenal thank you for
That um wow so um let’s shift gears here um I want to go back to you know you built this massive fan base on YouTube I mean you have a million I don’t know what you have now but like I won’t there’s a million subscribers on YouTube so like
We’re talking to a person that knows how to build a fan base and an audience and my market right they’re not doing it as much you know on social platforms as they are really in a local area in a local community right but the mechanics of it can’t be different right right the
Mechanics of it are the same right exactly and so talk talk about what what are the things that you did what are the skill sets that you had to have what are the things that you did to build a fan base that’s like I mean a million people
I mean think about that like that’s a lot of people yeah no absolutely and um you’re exactly right in the sense that it is the exact same amount amount of work and effort to build socially online local um as it is to build a a a large brand
Worldwide wide or or national um you know more or less is the same amount of content and again I would argue it’s actually easier to go wider because you don’t have to try to optimize locally uh you do using weird SEO terms and putting the the address in or the the um the
Area the city in the the headline for example of a post you don’t have to do any of that so what I’ve found out is a couple things is um one building something big is is just as easy if not easier than building local but two if you want to build local Authority
Building something beyond your your local audience is an incredible way to do so it’s actually quite interesting like U my the my partner at athletic motion golf um they were were 20 you know 20 plus year each and the the golf industry doing golf lessons um they couldn’t even imagine having an empty
Slot on their personal calendars for lessons anymore because athletic motion golf has become such a big brand that not only will people in the local areas just they’re blocking to them but where like people are flying in people are flying in every week to work with them
And they’re clearly charging a lot more so you know I know that that’s probably a a simplistic answer to the choice there of building locally versus um building um you know beyond that now as for the howto um it starts with understanding audience understanding pain points and
Creating content not for your peer but for your your audience who doesn’t know um I like to simplify if you know if we wanted to stick to YouTube for example understanding the the questions that your your target audience actually is searching for for answers to I call
It Family Feud and I talked about this when we um at at your event is if if Steve Harvey from Family Feud walked up to you and said hey I surveyed 100 of your ideal customers your ideal clients and asked them what they would type into YouTube or Google to find solutions for
Their problems or pain points what do you think that they would type in and I would just start listing that out listing it out listing it out and then the cool thing is you can take those ideas that you come up with go to YouTube and type them in and YouTube
Will auto complete based off of popularity and based off of what it thinks that you’re typing in but there’s if if there’s an auto completion so again you’re typing in the Google scroll bar and you see a bunch of of options that you can pick pop up that’s going to
Let you know one that there’s there’s traffic here for this this paino but two you can keyword SEO around those options that pop up because now people we’re not using 10 fingers we’re using two thumbs so people click those options to find what content that they want very very
Quickly I’ve got fireworks going on behind my head on camera from doing that hand gester which is interesting I was like what the hell is that like yeah completely meant to do that it was I’ve been uh yeah saving the fireworks for for the right time oh my God that’s
Hilarious yeah no but well it’s funny you know what you said I want to keep going but I was listening to a podcast recently and this guy had this annoying thing that he would do when the guy said something smart he would push a button and it
Would make this like noise like it was a bomb going off and it’s funny I was thinking about that as you’re saying it’s like oh this is like a knowledge bomb right here there should be some kind of noise and then that emoji like came up like that was like very weird I
Don’t even know what I did there but um oh my God hilarious it it’s it’s simplistic in the sense of actually understanding what your target audience wants not what you think they want not what you want to talk about and impress peers which again is very very it’s a
Prevalent mistake in the the fitness industry I see a lot is there people who are creating content to impress other create uh the competitors so to speak versus the target audience who are are typically on a much more simplistic level um they’re they’re searching for these problems because they don’t they
Don’t have the ANW from there you can check your work after doing Family Feud you can check your work with YouTube’s auto complete but then based on what’s popping up those are video subjects that you could create content on um and if you were to look at anything that you
Come up with in the whole family feud write down what you think your target audience is is searching for you can autocomplete come up with five or 10 different autoc completion video subjects and in a matter of 30 minutes if you do this you could have two or 300
Video subjects like that so I would then create a long form video 8 to 10 minutes in length and then I would create a short video which is just about a 45 second vertical Shot Youtube short on the same subject um shoot shoot your long form horizontal shoot your short
Vertical and then from there you just start putting out content the right people are going to start finding it I’m not going to get into the SEO stuff but to be quite Frank if you’re putting out the right information the SEO stuff just do your best because the algorithm
Nowadays they it watches your video it transcribes everything you said it looks around your room to see if there’s any more information that the audience would be interested in and then it will go out and find Your Right audience for you so it’s more of less the 80% of the well
I’ll tell you what 6040 should be focused 60% on subjects that your audience is actually searching for and are interested in and 40% be entertaining because we all know it that it’s not knowing knowing the most does not guarantee you a spot at the top of YouTube and most cases it actually does
The opposite you’re you’re you’re too high level you’re you’re talking and sharing at too high of a level instead looking at it from an entertaining and enjoyable making sure your content’s enjoyable to consume just by doing that foundationally that will point you in the direction and then as you develop
Your channel you’ll learn more about SEO you’ll get a coach you’ll uh take more interest in in building off of that Foundation but my first step would be just doing what I just said then and getting your first 10 15 20 videos rolling so I want to stay on this topic
And because I’ve taken your YouTube course it was phenomenal and several of the master run members have also taken it um talk to us about and we’re going to put a link I want to put a link if you’re still doing it I don’t know if
You are but uh we’ll put a link to the course in the in the show notes for sure but um talk to us about if a local brick-and mortar gym Warner was to start leveraging YouTube because this is your specialty right um I think he kind of
Started to get into it a little bit you know in that last segment but like if someone wants to get and start leveraging YouTube as a lead generation sales strategy what what in this short amount of time that we have um what could you share with us yeah it number
One start with the understanding what the target audience at scale is actually interested in um and actually the problems that they’re having create video headlines that are interesting and clickable I call it ethical clickbait you need to be able to deliver on that promise but it it don’t have a boring uh
You know this keyword headline how could do this no it needs to be exciting it need to be fun it needs to be engaging and something that people would want to click on um pay $10 to15 off of fivr and have thumbnails made for every video or
Every long form video that you create have8 to 10 minute videos starting out there’s two metrics to focus on click the rate which is out of the people who see your videos what percentage of them decide to click on the video to watch it now your click the rate is based on um
Really three key things video subject is the main thing is it a video subject that people are actually interested in number two your headline is your headline clickable and and explains what the video is about and then your thumbnail needs to be enticing and grab attention so don’t do what your everyone
In your space is doing do the exact opposite you know um a lot of times in for example the uh the gem gem world it might be black or thumbnail from the floor being like that black rubber maybe it’s for florescent lighting so I would come in with Neons or something that’s
Just going to stand out from the pack versus blend in and do what you think everyone else is doing um that’s the front end click rate now the back end and what I mean by that is once someone clicks your video the whole idea is accumulating what they call what is
Watch time which all that is is the average view duration needs to be as long as possible that’s the goal here now um or the the you want to generate as much watch time as possible from each of you now the best way to do that that
I found is to lengthen your video content for long form videos while maintaining around a 40% average view duration so if you’re under 40% see if you can get above it by you know making your videos more engaging having a hook in the beginning to grab the viewers
Attention reh hooking them at the three or four minute Mark to bring them back in of more information that’s going to come you want to do whatever you can to get keep people watching so we do pattern interrupts every seven to 14 seconds in our video a different camera
Angle a zoom in feature text on screen so having a video editor that understands the YouTube algorithm is really really beneficial and really helpful um from there if you’re just starting out the easiest way to generate leads is not to put a pinned link um it’s not to put a link in the
Description it is simply to say to the viewer hey if you want to work with me you know or if you want to work with us click um uh you know you say the word uh you know strength below comment the word strength and I or someone from my team
Will follow up that is really valuable for you know yeah you know it allows people to does a couple things one it makes it very simplistic for people if you’re especially if you’re not getting a ton of viewership yet you’re going to be more likely to generate leads but you’re also algorithmically building
Engagement because they’re going to comment you’re going to comment and you’re also algorithmically bringing in Social proof when people see that happening they’re going to do it as well to see if you comment to them as well so it’s an easy way to start generating engagement comments and actually get
Grow your channel and last thing I’ll say on this is try to get people to an email list because you know even if only 5% of them ever buy something from you 100% of them are interested in your content so continue to send them back to your YouTube videos or other social
Medias to start a fly will effect of getting increased clickthrough rates getting increased view duration and and accumulating more watch time on your videos and that will help your channel grow and reach more people that’s awesome I think that one little tip right there of just the the clarity
Around how to get people to generate leads from your videos just like tell them what to do and put it in the comments like that that seems to a lot of sense yeah cool um all right I want to wrap up with a final question and because I’m trying
To keep him at an hour and like we’re right there um so I’m writing a book for my kids and I actually got you know Joe hashy I got the idea well actually the idea was M this is sometimes with hashy does so I come you know you know when
I’m forced to to speak as much as I speak B based on running a mastermind I just say you know and I I said I was like I’m going to be writing a book for my kids and I said that like two years ago and hash she heard me say that and
Went and did it and did it before I did it damn damn yeah yeah I know right um so I’m doing it this year and I’m actually I’m super excited because I’m gonna finish because I’m already at 307 and the goal is 365 pages one page per lesson and it’s it’s the
Most excited I’ve ever been about a project like honestly like if I didn’t hit any of my goals this year except this one it’s a win of a year right so good um so I’m it’s I’m so excited but I’m gonna present it to them on Christmas
Um if you could do this right and give one piece and that like I know business is your thing but you’re successful I look at you as a successful person not just a successful business person um if you were to if I was to asked you to put a chapter in the
Book what would you say to the so think about not my kids but the to the young generation of America what would Adam linol in auger what would advice would give a couple a couple come to mind one would be people who put you down are always below you
And behind you in the perfect position to kiss your ass that’s great that would be my number one my number two would be um if you believe it nothing else matters hold on let me write down the first one uh people who put you down are always behind you below you and behind
You in the perfect position to kiss your ass oh I might have to put this one in there and give you a little credit yeah um my kids my kids will love the kick you kiss your ass part I let me see if I can find it I actually had the one
Of the original um cartoonists for Space Jam do a picture of me dunking and or it doesn’t really look like me to be fair a guy dunking and a bunch of the mon stars like puckering up below him um I’ll see if I can find that and send it to you because it’s
Phenomenal that’s great what’s the second one yeah the second is if you believe it nothing else matters and to me it goes back to I wanted to it started with dunking I wanted to dunk a basketball and be a great athlete so badly I obsessed over it I did the best
I could with what I had and and knew would in my mind would work but because I believed every step that I was taking was in the right direction even if it wasn’t I still got to the destination that’s always been an an ongoing um you know first foundational adult for
Me amazing well Adam you’re a person that I respect tremendously and uh I want to give the people listening to this an opportunity to see what you have going on I strongly suggest you follow Adam on on Facebook um because I just think you write some really smart stuff
