Okay so the back swing position is in no doubt the area that causes the biggest problems with am golfers that I get the opportunity to meet and so many golf has end up getting the idea of rotation in the back swing wrong to the point where it means that you can’t sequence a

Downswing and if I ever meet a golfer like this I’ll always do two things one we’ll take a look at Lucas Glover so Lucas Glover is a golf professional who doesn’t complete a full rotation in the back swing and is obviously very established golfer and then o encourage

Them to do a simple drill as well now the question would be how much rotation do you need to do and why are we turning in the first place well one of the things that we need to do in the GOL swing is we need to swing the club on

Plane so if I was to draw a line here towards my target line so I’m going to aim in that direction and then if I draw a line pretty much through the heel of the club and up through my elbow line This is known as our incline plane or

Our swing plane and what we need to do is to be able to get that club face Square so it’s pointing in that direction when I make hit with the ball I need to try and encourage the club to travel up and down the plane line and

Obviously the issue is is if I don’t do any rotational motion whatsoever I’m likely to lift the club above that plane line equally though that’s the least common swing fault what I tend to see is most golfers tend to time excessively too much and this gets them stuck and

Then again you can’t get that club nicely on the back of the ball so you need to turn the necessary amount so you can swing the club on plane which seems to be anything between 80 to 90° and if you’re somebody who overturns in your back swing which is a very good

Chance that you are then maybe the next time you go to the range think more about lifting your arms up and not trying to complete a turn and you may well just be surprised with those results on their own the other reason why this year and going into next year

And Beyond teamed up with swing buy so swing bety has featured recently in quite a few few videos and the reason why is cuz it works so well swing buddy is just a simple rope training gug but the idea is if I meet somebody for a lesson who really struggles with their

Right arm placement or their Trail arm placement I’ll often ask them just to lift this into position the same as if you were to skimmer Stone and what you’ll end up finding is they’ll put themselves into a really good place I’ll then say to that student get your lead

Hand to reach up towards it and they’re going to end up in an excellent position and that’s what you want to be thinking about in your back swing you want to be thinking about the most important factor is making sure obviously yes you get enough turn to swing the club on plane

But you’re really trying to place your right arm or your Trail arm into a good placement so you can then deliver the club on the back of the ball the same as we do with the Rope drill the same that you would do with a skimming a stone

Analogy and the same that eventually you need to with the golf club and like I say you may well just be surprised how not completing a back swing and deliberately swinging a little bit shorter may make a big difference to your game I’ll see you soon

  1. Funny that this video has come along, I've really shortened my back swing recently and it's improved my consistency immeasurably – all whilst not sacrificing too much distance (if any). If anything that shorter swing helps me achieve that whipping motion just that little bit easier.
