Good tonight’s POA ketov not even close so I will say this because I’m not going to hot take this up I said what I said weeks ago if the Hurricanes want to make the playoffs they have to trade for a goalie I didn’t back off off that even

After two three four five Great Performances P ketov cannot do it on his own he can’t bridge the gap until Frederick Anderson’s return assuming on top of that even if Frederick comes back on what planet is he physically reliable so I will reiterate if the Hurricanes want to make the playoffs

They have to acquire a goal tender now the the Crux of this dilemma is they have to determine what type of go tender could they get because after the second goal I’m sorry after the second period if I were rod bremore and all situations were were normal and I had a

Backup goalie that I could trust I would have pulled kachet off to start the third because the goal that Mike Riley scored is a goal that every single goenda hockey would have stopped Scott darling that was a Scott darling esque goal to allow clear look from inside the blue

Line was the puck knuckling yeah but he wasn’t close to it and it wasn’t like he fought the puck the the the the path of the puck so it wasn’t like something he was moving all over the place like you see sometimes a catcher in baseball

Trying to catch a knuckle ball and you could tell he’s struggling because but no he didn’t he did he never see it awful goal that was the worst of the goals he allowed the bo Horvat goal off the pad and and in the first period of the three bad

Goals that was the least of the bad goals it was bad but he did get a pad to it it just fluttered over his pad and in shouldn’t have you got to make that save but the Mike Riley goal was the bad goal really bad goal the anders Lee goal that made it

5-3 was also a bad goal it’s very possible that he was screened by Jacob slaven who went down to try to stop the shot but ketka it went right under his Pad I mean if you’re going to have your leg down have your leg down it was

Bad it was really bad and again played five great games so they at least need somebody that they can rely on Aaron Dell ain’t it Yaro hak wasn’t it I don’t know what they’re going to do to be honest there not as many because there’s a and there’s about

Eight teams that desperately need a goalie so I don’t know what Carolina’s going to do I really don’t but it’s it does seem like most of the good teams have maybe two good goalies and the Islanders are sitting over there with Simeon varlamov on the

Bench behind sokin he plays it up but he ain’t gonna play in the playoffs it’s ilas serin’s job the Hurricanes would win a Stanley Cup with Simeon varlam off and N they’re favorites right now where they are in the standings I know you it seems so simple

To say it and there’s no way to prove it I think the Hurricanes if they really had faith in their goalie and they can say what they want if they really had faith in their goalie then they’d be a better team but again easy for me to say impossible to

Prove but I firmly believe that they are a quality goenda from being back among the favorites to win the stand the cup um and it’s not because ketov can’t be good we’ve seen it this was a weird game in that he was partly good he made some really good saves tonight

On the first goal which we’re going to talk about in a second he made two great saves on the first goal and it wasn’t that goal was just unlucky because it went in off of Brent Burns which frankly appropriate that was an own goal so he was unlucky on the first

One second one it’s a great shot and he was screened but on the Brock Nelson goal but goals three four and five can’t go I mean the Hurricanes just aren’t playing well enough to overcome and it’s not like the Hurricanes aren’t playing well today was not a great game it was a

Fun game and Carolina certainly generated enough offense to win and not just four goals could had more but they generated enough to win the game but you can’t overcome bad goal tending you just can’t and the hurricanes are allowing in too many terrible goals that mean that hasn’t again for five games

And I said it at during the Vegas game I’m going to pretend that the the goal that made it 6-2 didn’t happen and it was deflected still should have been stopped but honestly he played very well in the uh the game in Pittsburgh so kov didn’t play like that

Game that goal was bothering him right so he played very well in Pittsburgh he only allowed the one um no he and he and Alex and delovic had a goal tending battle Ned was also great uh but I have no problem with way off played in Pittsburgh played five

Really good to great games in a row but he can’t do it he can’t do it on his own and you can’t wait for Freddy because it’s G to be too late Freddy’s not coming back till you know beginning of February at the earliest so I just don’t know what you’re waiting

For so I have some thoughts I don’t want to spend uh the rest of 2023 here but again just to reiterate uh we will not be doing a podcast after the games in Nashville home against Montreal and in Toronto I’ll be back uh after the game what on the

2nd and I think the game on the fifth is at Madison Square Garden they’re on the road for those three games tto I forget who they’re playing after Toronto I’ll get it uh and then at Madison Square Garden against the Rangers and I’ll be back for

Um for those two so if you just uh bear with me one second uh at the Rangers and then at the capitals so that’s where it is uh January 2nd at the Rangers January 5th at the capitals uh but we’ll I’ll be back for the uh the game against the

That I thought in Pittsburgh he was his best defensively to he was one of my three stars I think I had him as the as the third star of the game and he had no points you could probably count on No Hands how many times Brent Burns has

Been a star of the game without hitting the score sheet he was that good defensively but boy was he bad tonight um completely culpable on the first goal the giveaway and then he’s at the side of the goal and it Banks off of him and

In and this is like just to bring it back to Christmas if it was It’s a Wonderful Life he would probably wish that you know the Hurricanes might have won this game had I not even been born funny huh hauh come on credit me with a

Little uh uh What uh the you know Jimmy Stewart humor here um and then he gives the puck away on the Mike Riley goal worst goal Theon night so it’s a bad goal shouldn’t have been shouldn’t have gotten past ketov but Brent Burns gave the puck to

The Islanders which amounted to a Zone entry uh Burns who intercepted the Islanders attempted you know hard Rim up the boards he intercepts it facing the wrong way and I’m assuming he simply lost control of it but it did look like he was trying to pass it to slaven and

He passed it right to I even forget who The Islander player was and then the puck get cycled around right up to Mike Riley at the point and he just ripped the slap shot didn’t even hit it that hard and I was stunned that the puck

Went in the net stunned it’s a terrible goal but I mean Brent Burns is coupable on two goals I mean awful giveaways and that’s what Carolina I mean car you can’t overcome bad goal tending and you can’t overcome plays like that there a tough game tough game for Britt um so let me

Go let let’s just talk about this fetch golf go for a second not goal the sov non call and I’m going to start Thursday night in Pittsburgh so the penalty on spetch nikov in overtime was such a horrendous call first of all I don’t even know what they

Called hook hold whatever snov did none of it none of it Sydney Crosby’s got a hold of smetch then Crosby goes down I I believe it was the referee behind the play puts his arm up and I’m like are they calling a penalty on Crosby of all PE nope calling it on speet

Nikov and that was atrocious there were three penalties in the game that were terrible calls two of them was had uh Crosby be the victim the last three power plays that Pittsburgh got they didn’t score in any of them so you can say that it didn’t affect the game bull Carolina had to

Kill three power plays um the Jack jury hold I mean Sid just Falls wasn’t a hold Sid just Falls and because Sydney Crosby fell oh somebody must have done something hand in the air Jack jur of the Box the pesy ruffing or whatever on was it Jake gensel who cares that’s a terrible

Call moving on the overtime call I mean the fact that they killed it off and kov was great on that is just a miracle and then you’re losing a shoe down but it was just a just a terrible terrible call they got the they got the wrong offender

In that Crosby should have gone if anybody was going to go but I would argue nobody goes anyway fast forward to today snov gets the puck just inside the Blue Line offensively he’s coming in against uh who was the was it I think it might have been

Riley um anyway he makes a diving attempt to knock the puck away from spetch nikov he actually hits spetch legs and then his stick misses the puck and takes him out and somehow that’s not called tripping now I heard trip say that you could make an argument for a penalty

Shot I will disagree because I don’t think the chance was so clearcut like it was still going to be contested if um if if Riley doesn’t do that he wasn’t clear nearly in but it’s a penalty it is tripping a 100 times in a row it is

Tripping so not only is that not called the play goes the other way ketov makes two great saves the puck comes out to S oh no I’m sorry I missed the spot I missed the it’s like it’s like you’re cleaning like how did you miss that spot

It’s giant it’s a giant smudge on the mirror so the Puck’s coming into the Zone Brent Burns has the puck on the right half wall and I don’t know if he was afraid of being hit by I think it was enval he just kind of freezes and loses

It I mean you just get that puck out go D to D go across to Jacob slave and get the puck out Burns loses the puck then two great chances keto off saves both Puck comes out to Sebastian AO the wrong Sebastian AO he fires it at the net he misses the

Net wide but it goes off of Burns and in I mean nothing could be more appropriate in that play I don’t know how the call is missed I know the referee actually Frederick uh lorier I probably look I I definitely blew his name uh who by the way is a

Resent he said something he skated over to the Hurricane’s bench before the second period started and I don’t know if he was trying to explain it to Rod or not but Rod was El listen and Rod was respectful but he just like just Shrugged because it’s a it’s it’s

Incredible that that’s a no call incredible and like you if if you wanted to argue that there were makeup calls in in favor of Carolina uh I’ll I’ll buy it Carolina went to the power play twice I think early in the second period first one was probably a penalty

Second one I don’t know I don’t know if it was of course the second one was erased immediately by a Seth Jarvis hooking penalty so they played fouron Four hockey for uh for almost two minutes anyway I don’t at some point you know I talked to Rod before the game but

First of all I credited him with not blowing up after three bad calls in Pittsburgh and he goes at some point I mean you’d think that the bad call will even out right it’s not about power play opportunities believe it or not the Hurricanes I believe the hurricanes have

Had more power play opportunities than they have been short-handed so it’s not like you can point to well you know it’s like 55 % of the power plays in our games go to them and you can’t even point to that so for just for accuracy sake the hurricanes have been on the

Power play 111 times this year hurricanes have been down a man 107 times this year so it’s a wash supposed to even out Islanders have been on the power play 90 times been short-handed 96 times this is before tonight whatever the numbers were tonight the numbers

Were so it’s not like you can even say that uh the Hurricanes aren’t getting their fair share of power plays because they are but it does appear that the atrocious calls have gone against Carolina I’m not even G to lie I mean the last two games are

Glaring and I don’t think we have too many like I’m pretty I think I’m pretty fair if it’s a penalty it’s a penalty and if it’s not it’s not um but I I mean the last two games have just been really really brutal so it’s unfortunate also if you’re the

Hurricanes there were many opportunities to score that would have tied it after the yaho power play goal three on- one fetch on the left hits the post if that goes in how different is the game right uh after slaven made it 43 then was slaven made it

43 Carolina had a couple of really good opportunities where they didn’t get shots off now now I thought today I put it on Twitter I thought they they probably set an unofficial franchise record for uh times that they whiffed either trying to shoot or pass or clear the

Puck it was it was just one of those nights maybe the ice wasn’t good because they played basketball here earlier today I don’t know but Carolina had some opportunities and uh and just didn’t do W able to take advantage of it you could argue that the Hurricanes they certainly did have more

Scoring opportunities than the Islanders did tonight the Islanders got better goal tending and that’s why they won the game um it all I mean it’s it pretty much boils down to that doesn’t it all right I said I would give you my uh three stars of

The uh of the game and then I have some thoughts about three stars not of the game of the first first you know the pre pre- holiday season and there are other we there are some honorable mentions here I’ll give you an honorable mention of Jack Drury who I think has played

Very well give you an honorable mention of Tavo terrain give you an honorable mention of Jacob slaven Brady Shay um now there’s a lot of guys who played well but here are my three stars for the pre holiday season third star Steph n doesn’t lead the team in goals doesn’t

Lead the team in points doesn’t lead the team in time on ice not necessarily great defensive player but for the most part Steph is incredibly consistent you know where he’s going to be he provides Carolina with something that they desperately need and that that is somebody who is

Comfortable playing right in front of the goalie so he is my third third star he did score tonight he did try some French pastry uh the old Al Maguire statement he tried something fancy in the uh third period on the power play uh and he was

It was denied the pass across behind his back through the legs was denied but the puck came right back to him and his 10th goal of the season made it 5-4 and there was still plenty of time still 9 minutes 17 seconds left uh Carolina just couldn’t get the

Equalizer so n is my third star my second star is Jaylen Chatfield I said after last season aside from AO and Jordan Stall that Jaylen Chatfield should have been a priority signing then I don’t know what the price tag is going to be on Jaylen chadfield but chatfield’s good enough to play 20

Plus minutes a night he’s got offensive upside he is an incredible skater he is a solid human being and he’s young that guy has to be signed now I don’t know what it’s going to cost now I don’t but Jaylen chatfields I think had a great first

Half and how many nights in a row was he a healthy extra as Rod was trying to make Tony D’Angelo and his offense a thing and it was okay but it wasn’t good enough and he couldn’t play with Demitri orof so that was never going to work

Chatfield’s my second star and the first star for me of the pre-holiday Season even though the numbers might not jump out at you Seth Jarvis he is an all situations player he is fearless he will throw his body around there’s still another level for

Him even this year to get to and I hope he does but to me he has been arguably Carolina’s best player in the first half of the season so um to me Jarvis is Carolina first star so those are my three stars of the first 35 games the pre- holiday games

Now who has more to give virtually everyone has more to give and you’ll notice I didn’t mention Sebastian AO in my honorable mention and he leads Carolina in points he leads Carolina he’s tied for the lead in goals right so let’s let’s get the points Sebastian AO had a goal tonight

No assists right so Sebastian AO our Sebastian AO has 31 points 13 goals 18 assists in 31 games played so on Pace for 82 points so why is it that i’ believe that Sebastian ao’s game if I were giving him a grade based on himself I mean we could these two things

Can be true Sebastian AO is Carolina’s best player and he has not had an impactful Enough season those two things can be true if I were giving AO a grade based on ao’s ability it would be a C+ for the first 35 games of this season and again

He’s missed some time missed five what five games right uh five games four games I’m not or three games they played 34 games I’ve been saying the wrong number the whole time right today was Team game uh 34 there just been too many nights where he’s just there and your best player

Should be noticeable basically every night and there are going to be games where he’s not that’s fair he’s not McDavid or Matthews or McKinnon or he’s not one of those but in the next tier of great player he’s there so Matthew Barelle right I’ve seen the Islanders a handful

Of times this year saw him all three times the Hurricanes played and I’ve seen him a few other times mattt barzel is always noticeable always that’s what we want Sebastian AO to the team needs Sebastian AO to be a a a headache for the opposition every night every

Night um so when I say virtually everybody has some has more to give I mean it all right this is going to sound overly harsh and I do mean it to be that way Dmitri orof and Michael bunting were wastes for this team not that each player isn’t

Good if you told me that Dimitri orloff was making $35 million a year I’d be like yeah that’s okay it’s pretty good third pair left defenseman dangerous shot blah blah blah can uh can help out on the power play a little bit Michael bunting yeah good solid you know feisty third line

Winger making what four and a half million or whatever he makes they’re waste Michael bunting isn’t playing the way Carolina thought he was going to play again we can look at points AG go wow he’s been good n man I don’t think he’s been that good he’s certainly been a defensively

So like I’ll say it this way who would you rather have Michael bunting or Nino nider I’ll move on and Demitri orof is not worth s and three4 million dollar a year just isn’t this year and next year if Jim Rutherford were in charge of this team he is now in charge of

Vancouver if Rutherford were in charge of this team I think he would explore trades for both players because neither of them have made Carolina better now maybe bunting in the next part of the season will and maybe Oraf in the next part of the season will but

But they haven’t to this point and in fact the struggles early in the season weren’t only about orloff I thought a lot of it was about his partner and I love I keep saying this if Tony D’Angelo were listening to this podcast and for all I know he

Is Tony would know how much I respect his game and like him personally he he was not the guy to play with orof Tony’s doing his own thing offensively and that was never going to work with orof we I said it from the beginning of the season it’s got to be Chatfield I

Get one and to have Tony D on the on the ice heck I’d like to see I would have lik to have seen Tony play with Chatfield let Chatfield play is offside and Tony could go all over the place offensively and jaylen’s got his back but I

Just orloff was to me a waste of 7.75 million if you could find a team that wants Demetri orof and they have a goalie they could give you I would make that trade a billion times in a row a billion heck I might consider trading uh orloff to Edmonton for Jack Campbell

Today Campbell can’t be that bad can he anyway I it’s it’s you know it’s exciting when the Hurricanes went all in on free agency but I don’t think either either player has really helped them um and finally you want to make the playoffs you need a goalie you need a goalie

And it gets me to the final question that I will ask and it’s a rhetorical question because I will answer it do you have faith that and this is all based on past history do you have faith that the decision makers here will be able to go out and successful acquire a

Goenda that Carolina’s front office has made all right we desperately need a defenseman because douge Hamilton and Brett pesy are hurt uh will give you a first round pick for Brady Shay Rangers Shay was on a third pair Rangers trying unload his contract Brady Shay was not that good then has blossomed

Here the Brady Shay that the Hurricanes acquired wasn’t nearly as good as the Brady Shay that is currently on the Hurricanes so he’s a guy who elevated when he got here it was an awesome deal as it turned out an awesome deal it was really born out of

Desperation I maybe they can do that again the Vincent troch Florida is just trying to unload his salary and he came here and I thought troch was a very good player I don’t I never looked at him as being a guy who was going to be a I mean

On a Stanley Cup champion I didn’t look at him as a second line Center I could be wrong he’s playing decently I think for the Rangers anyway um but they they took advantage of a Florida team who was just looking to unload Florida was not a

Playoff team at the point at that point like advantage of a Florida team that was trying to unload a salary hurricanes are going to have to find a situation like that the problem is I think the front office if they don’t win every deal they won’t make it look at look at

What has happened at the last couple of trade deadlines yeah Shane gosis bear was nice Arizona’s just dumping him took advantage of it and yes they pull you Yari really oh oh but this is not the year to go for it bull the hurricane should have been

Allin the last two seasons not just one year should have been all in two seasons ago in the stupid pandemic year no no I’m sorry that was a Metro year they should have been all in the stupid pandemic year where they traded Hayden flurry for joh hakaba that was

The only trade they made and then two years ago they acquire uh Max doy who had one game game seven against the Bruins that was the game I mean stop trying to uh you know beat the market stop trying to outwit the system and go about the business of making your

Hockey team better this is a team has has a chance to win a Stanley Cup we thought now they’re clearly not playing well enough right now to even pretend that they have a chance to win a Stanley Cup based on the way they’re playing but the bones of that team are

Here they just they just need uh they need polishing they need uh they need somebody to do a forensics on it and go all right what this isn’t working this isn’t working let’s fix it that’s why I said that Jim Rutherford would fix it and I will simply uh point to

This Carolina had been dying for Puck mov a puck moving defenseman now I don’t think it was Auto it was like immediate sandis oaly man oh what a player great skater offensive guy yeah wasn’t wasn’t a good enough player he certainly was a great scorer great offensive player smooth skater fun to

Watch but he wasn’t help and you win and Rutherford recognized that you know what let’s get rid of him and they brought in hkin and Adams and that was enough right so that was in 2002 bred hkin and Kevin Adams come from Florida Sanz oin goes to Florida best player skill-wise was Sanz

Oin Carolina won the trade by a billion miles because Brett hakin uh was an outstanding solid good skating defenseman and Kevin Adams was one of those players like a Jordan martinook that it just helps you get better Rutherford realized yeah this isn’t what we need he not working out

And he did it right before the uh in the year before we shut down in 2000 at the trade deadline he realized you know Danny marov we thought Danny Mar Mar would be great not working out traded Markov to Philadelphia for Justin Williams recognized that a certain player wasn’t fitting in wasn’t helping

The team the way they thought he would help the team and they moved him on somebody had a need moved him on and brought in something else I don’t have the faith that they’ll do that um but they need a goalie I think they need somebody who they can actually

Use not just somebody to sit on the bench and play occasionally I think they need a goalie are they going to go out and get one so anyway with all of that said notice if you were uh asking me questions that were not naughty or nice

Or giving me your three stars by the way I saw a bunch of similar Stars so somebody mentioned Drury so somebody mentioned terrain I did not make them one of my three stars but I’m not going to say that you’re wrong so um with all of the problems all of the

Issues we sit here basically 24 hours before the sleigh leaves the North Pole and the hurricanes are one point out of a playoff spot so spend the next few days enjoying your family enjoying some downtime eating things you probably shouldn’t eat watching too much horrible football speaking of horrible football

Actually it wasn’t horrible Liverpool Arsenal was entertaining today and I think both sides felt like they should have scored a goal that they didn’t score Gabrielle Martinelli in the first half Trent Alexander Arnold in the second but 1-1 fair result anyway just in a sign um but just enjoy yourself

Right be be happy for the people around you be happy that this is a hockey team that we’re bummed about and they’re one point out of a playoff spot with 47 sorry 48 games to play so there’s a lot of teams out there that are out of
