Minutes LSU basketball is on the hardwood tonight against Lamar which sounds pretty boring and I don’t think a lot of you will be locked in on that especially with the Saints playing however there are some interesting aspects of that game that I do want to
Want to dive into at 1:30 best win and worst loss in the NFL coming up later I’m going to for the first time honestly the first time we’ve done this I’m going to take a look at Wisconsin’s football team in the top of the second hour LSU
Does play them in football in a week and a half and uh we’ll certainly spend some time next week getting used getting you ready for LSU and Wisconsin but I feel like it’s about that time signing days in the rearview mirror done the Heisman thing let’s let’s take a glance at the

Again today I told you when we went out there on Tuesday that he was participating fully and wearing the number 18 and um it was I thought voted well for LSU when you talking about a guy that missed the back half of the Season that has an opportunity to
Explore the NFL for him to come back and practice with the team would be one a good sign that he’s going to play in the bowl game obviously and two would stand a reason he’s got a chance to come back next year to play for LSU now he said
Today to the assembled media that he has not made that decision yet um maybe this is an opportunity for him I think rarely would I suggest that a play player can gain a lot in their draft stock in a bowl game I I I would rarely suggest
That be the case I think a lot of people say oh you got to come back and you can help not just get hurt and hurt your draft stock you can help your draft stock in a game 60 Minutes of action 30 because you’re only playing half the game because you don’t play
Both ways rarely is that going to be a monster swing for an NFL organization to look at but in Mai’s case he had really good tape as a freshman at Missouri really good tape as as a sophomore at LSU and really mediocre tape as a junior
If he were to go out there and dominate against Wisconsin who generally speaking feels a pretty solid offensive line well maybe that proves okay that that four game stretch we were analyzing from 2023 is an outlier because he was hurt if we look at what he was in the bowl game
When he recovered he looks great as a sophmore looked great as a freshman looked great and maybe I can twist my way into a web of suggesting that Makai can can really improve his draft stock by playing in a bowl game he also made a great
Point I think that a lot of people in this town will appreciate that he said look I I owe it to this team I’m the captain of this team they they told me I was wearing number 18 I owe it to these guys to come out there and finish the
Job and win the 10th game and that’s a very admirable stance for Makai to take absolutely earlier this week we went through what LSU’s got on the defensive front bringing in Shawn Washington what do m go and Mason Smith want to do you got a couple of freshman you brought in
Including Gabe relerford can save yon Jones Elevate his game Braden Swinson like we talked about LSU’s defensive front and he’s probably the most important piece he’s out there practicing he’s going to play in the bowl game the decision on whether or not he’ll forego his final year and enter the NFL draft
Remains to be seen but um right now in the short term he’s with the team and we’ll see him in Tampa come the first this the second piece to this was uh marginally surprising to me um Mike Den Brock’s name is now being reported and attached to the Notre Dame vacant
Offensive coordinator job um and this time of year when that happens the inclination is okay one this coach has genuine sincer in the job two this is a leverage play for more money well Mike denrock just signed an extension worth more money within the month
So the idea that this is a leverage play doesn’t make a whole lot of sense I guess theoretically they could rip that contract up and bump his pay again but this feels like reading tea leaves Mike Den Brock really likes to work for Brian Kelly he’s told me that directly when we
Had our uh pregame show interview it was back like the second or third game of the season um said yeah I just it said what brought you back to working with Brian Kelly he said ah it’s it’s great to work for him he lets you to handle
Your business um you know and it’s a professional environment and he had a lot of great things to say about Brian Kelly and that’s why he he came to join Brian Kelly after a stop with him at at Notre Dame um so I don’t think it’s a leverage
Play I think there’s probably some sincere interest there and if you were listening to live at lunch a little earlier Charlie said three-year contract work near $2 million is what he’s hearing um and that makes you think and Mike Den Brock is from the Midwest he’s from Southern Michigan near South Bend
And maybe that’s feels more like home to him I don’t know he and Marcus Freeman were coordinators together under Luke fickle at Cincinnati Freeman was the defensive coordinator Den Brock was the offensive coordinator of course we know that Freeman took the the Notre Dame defensive coordinator job and then
Eventually became the head coach there when Brian Kelly left and den Brock left Cincinnati to come here and run the offense and he’s done so brilliantly for the last two years and I’m trying to to weigh everything here with Mike Den Brock I’m trying to weigh current situation versus the situation at her
Dame you’ve got what looks like an elite offensive line coming back a lot of talent wide receiver a lot of talent at running back a quarterback that you’ve worked with for two years that’s a pretty comfy spot to run an offense or you go to Notre Dame where you’ve got
What looks to be Riley Leonard coming in at quarterback from duke and maybe that excites you a little bit more than what you’ve seen from Garrett NM I don’t know I hadn’t been at practice and maybe home is a big draw maybe Marcus Freeman is a
Big draw maybe Notre Dame is a big draw I don’t know what Mike Den Brock prioritizes I have been around him for a total of about 17 minutes he seems to me to be a really low laidback happy go-lucky football guy and whether or not he loves it in Louisiana
I don’t know whether or not he loved it at Notre Dame I I don’t really know but I feel like with Bruce Feldman who’s not exactly a Mudslinger Bruce Feldman’s as a respected a college football reporter as there is in the country with him saying this I think there’s a real
Significant chance that Mike Den Brock would move on and take the offensive coordinator job at Notre Dame now that would leave LSU in the running for a coordinator in the first place that I think most of our brains go would be right down the hall to Joe Sloan Joe
Sloan coach quarterbacks Louisiana Tech he’s done a great job recruiting at LSU uh specifically with with Bryce Underwood who we think he’s done a mashille job with and he did a really really good job with Jaden Daniels there’s no doubt about that is Brian Kelly ready to hand Joe
Slan the keys to LSU’s offense should Mike Den Brock move on I don’t know this is a place where you don’t have to hire the guy down the hall you can do an exhaustive National search and get a ton of massive interest if you’re at LSU and you’ve got a coordinator job open
Specifically with all those great things I just laid out you’ve got a healthy quarterback room a lot of talent and an offensive line that has been built into a monster by Brad Davis so Brian Kelly could could take his time with that I think it would stand a reason that LSU’s
Going to play the bowl game now that national Signing Day is in the rearview mirror and nothing has happened I and obviously there’s a couple more Signing Day days that you can you can ink over the next week but your your recruiting class is very close to being done
Depending on what Co and Eckles does uh tomorrow but you got Signing Day in the rearview Mir I think you would get the bowl game in the reir and then any thing that would happen with LSU staff whether it be folks leaving for other jobs whether it be people being relieved of
Their duties like whatever the case may be I would think it would happen on the second on the third whenu gets back from the bow game has their exit meetings and whatnot you find out more about what players are coming and going and what coaches are are coming and
Going it it just feels to me again this is a te Le situation and not a reporting situation it’s a talk show you just kind of say things that on your mind for Bruce Feldman to report that Mike Den Brock has has been approached and there’s a lot of interest in him
Becoming Notre Dame’s offensive coordinator it feels like to me this is not Den Brock planning something to get a raise it feels like Notre Dame wants Mike Den Brock and he’s very seriously considering it I think it would be uh a big loss for LSU I don’t know what Joe Sloan brings
As a play caller or who would be the next guy uh I’d personally rather go into it with the The Proven commodity in Den Brock next year but in this line of work coaches changed hands a lot and if you’ve got a couple coordinators that nobody wants you’re probably not very

Out here I don’t know man uh this is like absolutely bizarre it’s it’s been raining literally the whole time I’ve been here I’ve been here for 24 hours now it’s uh it’s crazy well it’s going to be a big one inside soofi tonight um I’ve asked you this a bunch of times
Over the last like six weeks but I feel like I might get a different answer this time like Vibes better after winning two games at home than they were three weeks ago Vibes are so much better yeah um yeah it’s it’s uh It’s Kind of Night and Day difference between uh between now
And you know when they’re on that that three- game losing skid I feel like there’s actually some confidence in the building right now um the last week was probably their um their most complete overall performance maybe even more so than the the Patriots game um you know
So they’re feeling good but you this is going to be a huge test to that this is probably the probably the best team they’ve played this year i’ thought of made the the Lions um and you know especi they’re playing really hot right now I think the
Rams have scored like 33 points per game over the last four um so it’s going to be a huge challenge man like if they’re going to keep these Good Vibes going they’re going to have to play really well tonight we start with the offense uh what was a lot better in the game
Against New York well I mean I just think they were efficient I mean it’s it’s as efficient as they’ve looked all season um their running game was good enough uh Derek Carr was taking what was available to him and he was getting rid of the ball pretty quick I think their protection
Really held up over the course of that game the only sack he took was uh on a Blitzer beating the running back in protection you have the offensive line held up and everything just looked fluid you know everything looked on time and on schedule
Um yeah I don’t know if if I can like look at that and be like okay they’ fixed their their problems um but you it was really good to see that and you know I think if they’re getting Crystal La back tonight and um if they can keep
Kind of stringing some good performances together I think you feel a lot better about this team now than you did you know six weeks ago or whatever I liked the fact that the ball was spread out so much last week uh does that change a little bit when you bring alve back into
The fold do you need to feature him or can they continue to spread it out to nine10 guys yeah I think you can do both you know Derek only had 28 pass attempts in that game um you I think if you have you know 30 35 you can get AE his you
Know seven to nine targets and still spread the ball around you know um and I think you can take your your shots with them when you want to you can design the plays for him but then you know the general understanding of the offense is
He’s goingon to throw to the open guy um so yeah I mean I’m with you on that though and and on top of that I think they they did some things that you just have kind of wanted to see you know they ran a lot more play action um you know
They were thrown to the to to the middle of the field they’re throwing to the boundaries they were using everything um so and and I think their screen game looked pretty good last game too so I mean there’s just so much to like about that performance they just got to prove
That they can consistently do it you know week in week out um except just that hasn’t been the case this year they did it without Ryan Ramic last week they’ll have to do that again Landon young out there at right tackle how big a loss is that for for New Orleans I
Mean it’s big you know I don’t think Ram is a player he was four years ago you know I think it is this knee injury has kind of been a consistent problem for him over the last two or three seasons um but he still a really good player
He’s still probably their best offensive lineman um and you know I think for the Ram from the Rams perspective even though the the bigname guy on that defensive line is Aaron Donald they’ve got some guys that can hurt you on the edge um you know that rookie Byron young
Out of Tennessee is having a really nice season for them um and you know they’re going to need Landon young to hold up and they’re going to need to probably give him some help out there um but you know that kind of fact the fact of life
In the NFL how much of the pass rush last week for the Saints was the Lions being the worst offensive line the uh Giants being the worst offensive line in the NFL and how much did they kind of find some some juice up front Ah that’s
A good question man I I think we’re GNA find out the answer tonight uh because the Giants are a really really bad uh pass blocking team that is for sure but I think the Saints have also done some nice things the last couple weeks and and changed things up a little bit uh
After being just really underwhelming as a pass rushing unit All Season uh so you they they sent some more second level blitzes you they’re using Zack Bond as an edge rusher they’re getting some speed and athleticism on the field um yeah they’re doing some nice things
Let’s see if it can actually impact this game you know I think Matthew Stafford is a quarterback that uh that kind of plays into their strengths right he’s he’s a a pocket passer a guy who’s gonna stay back in there and sling it um he’s
Not going to hurt you with his legs and I think that works to the Saints benefit uh but yeah I just I I have to see it uh against a good team yeah this is kind of like the the whole story with the Saints this year it’s like they have these
Moments where you’re like man this this looks really good uh can they do it against a good team and tonight’s a really good opportunity for them to show they can can the Saints win tonight without a turnover yeah yeah I think they can like I think the Rams defense is Gable and I
Think um you know their their strengths the Rams strengths can play into the Saints strength the only thing that really worries me like really worries me about tonight’s game from a Saints perspective is uh they got a stud running back and they have a really really good scheme um you
This guy’s leading the N I’m talking about Kiron Williams he’s leading the NFL in rushing yards per game I think he’s like fourth in the NFL in rushing even though he missed four games he’s got like 150 scrimmage yards per game over the last four games is averaging so um he’s
Good man and I I think I think if if the Rams are able to lean on him and uh and the Saints aren’t able to kind of keep up it could that that that would be the thing that worries me but I think they’re the Saints offense can get
Points against this defense I think the uh the Rams Receivers I think the Saints secondary matches up well against them so um really it’s just Kyon Williams for me and look when the saints played Detroit with Jared G that Detroit scored on them and when they played Trevor Lawrence and Jacksonville Jacksonville
Scored on them Tommy DeVito and uh Bryce Young no they didn’t but I think the Rams are going to score if the Saints say need to score 31 points tonight do you think they can do it I think they can yeah yeah and I’m withy on that too like I just got done
Talking about uh yeah I think they match up well but I think the Rams are gonna I mean they have an explosive offense um so yeah I think the Saints are going to need to score 28 30 35 points um and I think it’s possible I just you know it’s it’s what
Version of the Saints are we going to see tonight um you know are we going to see the one that uh we saw a lot early in the season where they move the ball well and they can’t score in the red zone are we going to see the one that
Has been they’ve scored nine touchdowns in the last 10 Red Zone trips you know I I just I think if they’re on this team that just continuing to kind of Ascend offensively then yes have done for big chunks of this season then you know they’re probably in
For a long night I’m curious I don’t have as good a feel on on Sofi and the Rams fan base you go to Philly you go to Kansas City I got a pretty good sense you’re going to be up against it from a crowd perspective what kind of

Environment which I guess it kind of has to be if you have two teams playing there yeah I guess that’s kind of the deal you think the Saints win tonight uh I don’t uh I think it’s possible but I I picked the the Rams to
To win this one which you know maybe I’m just uh trying to get myself some free time in January I don’t know um if they lose tonight uh do you think it’s it’s over I I mean obviously it depends on what Tampa does this weekend but does
This feel like a must-win to you uh yes this feels like a must win because this is this one is most beneficial for their playoff chances uh you know it’s two birds one stone they they’ get the head head to-head over the Rams they knock the Rams game back but
Realistically they just need to win two out of their last three yeah so if they lose this one they can still they can still get into the playoffs wi in the last two it’s just this one is a little bit uh has it carries the extra weight

You’re talking about more than 350 teams in D1 they’re in the top 35 in possessions for game they play fast and they make threes oh well it’s Lamar like who cares lless you hold on then you look at LSU’s three-point defense 313th in the country in threo percentage defense even worse than that

Wanting to play for LSU I I really believe that there’s that that passion and I think it’s not just LSU I think you know when I was in the midwest I I was at Cincinnati I mean that that same sense is that I they wanted to be a
Buckeye right they wanted to play for Ohio State and I think that that geographically is in you know some the passionate States about football and I think that’s clearly here in the state of Louisiana that that young boys grow up to young men that want to play for
LSU so I think that’s real and and so we recognize that and if if they possess the traits from A football standpoint and from a character standpoint an academic standpoint darn right we’re going to recruit him absolutely you know it’s you got to be careful about paying painting recruiting
With a broad brush money doesn’t always win in recruiting every single kid that comes from the state of Louisiana doesn’t want to play LSU but some do and that’s going to win out sometimes and that’s that advantage that LSU has and it’s easier to point to some under recruited guys
From the state of Louisiana that have blossomed into great players at LSU as opposed two under recruited guys from outside the state of Louisiana that have come to LSU LSU doesn’t recruit a lot of two and three stars from Arkansas and Alabama but you can certainly point to
The ones that they’ve recruited from the state of Louisiana we got one that does our morning show Hester you of course mention Justin Jefferson all the time Lloyd cushenberry Duke Riley Dion Jones some of these guys that weren’t necessarily Leonard Fett they weren’t necessarily you know Derek Stingley
These five-star can’t miss prospects but they were people that were a little under recruited had a chip on their shoulder wanted the offer from LSU jumped at it and then took their game to the next level when they got here and it doesn’t always work out and you could point to a
Guy like Josh Williams it’s not from Louisiana and was under recruited and decided to come here with a chip on his shoulder and make it happen so but it happens more often here and hopefully the the nucleus of this class that is so strongly Louisiana one is less likely to transfer
Out because they’re from here and this is home and two plays with that chip on their shoulder that a lot of under recruited Louisiana players have played with thought that was really really cool when I went through all the position groups yesterday and kind of went through my state of the program and
Where things were the one that I express the most concern about is defensive line and we’ll get some more information on that as Mai Wingo makes his decision and we think Mason Smith will be back but you look at defensive line and and there is reason for a little bit of of pause
When you look at it and Brian Kelly asked if they’re looking to maybe add some more depth upfront on defense so the junior college player uh shown Montgomery we really kind of sa satisfied that piece uh kind of early on before the transfer portal even got busy
So we used him as kind of the model like if if somebody is of that caliber of a player or better maybe we’d be interested and and we feel good about retention Brian Kelly does that a lot um sha Washington is the name you’re looking for there he called him Shawn
Mcgomery um but that’s okay same guy we got we got it figured out uh and so he said they feel good about retention we’ll see what that means as far as Mason Smith and McKai Wingo go as far as Braden Swinson and those guys go Savon Jones that portal windows open for a
Little bit longer and then you’ve obviously got the draft that people will consider um but it sounds like based on conversations that he’s had that they’re going to run this thing back with a lot of the same guys that were on this LSU defensive front hopefully sha Washington
Not mcgomery uh is is a plug-and-play guy that can give you a lot of depth hopefully Jacobian gillery decides that that he wants to come back and and add depth um I I would anticipate that but you never know this s in college football he certainly got the ability to
Transfer or or move on cuz he’s he’s played for three years so um we’ll see what that looks like come spring ball I’m still a little bit nervous about that LSU defensive front um talked about a couple of players individually but one of the the bites that we enjoyed was was
Deshawn McBride because this is a safety from the Baton Rouge area and we know that LSU safety play was not very good last year and I don’t want to Heap too much expectation on a freshman to come in here and play there are guys that are
In front of him they just brought in Jordan Gilbert and you understand that they’ve they’ve got Ryan Yates and some guys in this past class maybe Toano goes back there like they’ve got other options but he did talk about deshun McBride outside of length and athleticism you know the safety position
Is is one of of need within our program you just look at the numbers on the depth chart first student athlete uh that plays football that has graduated from Denham Springs early um so he’s a terrific student High character you know has all the traits that we’re looking
For so not only he’s got length he’s really brings the kind of safety presence that we’re looking for in terms of being able to cover a number two receiver but also a great tackler great student and um a great young man and he’s another one of these guys that

Was a 15 to six game by nine they lost at Ohio against Ohio State by 14 lost to Indiana by six lost to Northwestern by two scores um it’s not a very good team it’s just not and offensively the numbers are putrid their scoring offense ranked

125th in the country and time of possession they don’t even dominate that at 85th in the country so they’re they’re terrible across cross the border on offense but that they’re worst at creating explosive plays um they lean on their running game that should be no surprise and brilin Allen is their bcal
Running back 984 yards he’s second Team all big 10 had 181 carries this year and he’s not playing he’s opt it out of the bowl game to get ready for the NFL their second back chz malozi got hurt in September and is out so they’re basically on their third team running

Then two months into him being here Ed oon gets fired and there is no guarantee anybody on that staff is sticking around and he had such a stable opportunity in fville that was going really well in year one under Sam Pitman and he’s he’s got the confidence of the head coach
Who’s coached that position and you know he wouldn’t have left if he’ had known Ed oon was going to be fired two months in now you say well you got to know that’s going to happen well you know it was an opportunity to come home and he did but
The fact is that Brian Kelly came in and the first Tire he made was to go get Brian poan and the second hire he made was to go get Frank Wilson and finally the news was announced that interim head coach at that point Brad Davis for the
Bowl game was going to be the guy an offensive line coach and that has turned out to be a home run because not only has Brad Davis gone out and recruited consecutive Elite level classes on the offensive front he’s also developed Will Campbell and Emory Jones
Into what are going to be really high draft picks he’s found the right combination they didn’t have it to start the Florida State game in the super doome but they quickly adjusted and got Turner in there and put eny Jones at right tackle and that that worked and
