Let’s talk about a driver and in particular how you can start hitting much longer drives producing less spin where it feels like you’re putting less effort in and the ball’s going further I’m going to take a little bit of inspiration from Victor holand for this video now Victor holand is a really

Athletic young long hitter but the reason why I want to use him as a bit of inspiration is because of the way that he spoke about hitting driver which I thought felt very relatable um for how my sort of style of coaching is regardless of your sort of physical

Limitation because let me explain when you get set up to the driver the general idea is that the driver swing is very different so that’s what most people tend to think and you know getting in the head of lots of students that I work with is what they tend to think and

There’s this massive idea of trying to hit into out and hit the ball from very much the inside and and it’s not necessarily so much that those things aren’t necessarily true it’s just when you tell yourself that story it’s the type of swing that ends up materializing

And what happens with loads of golfers is they end up sort of overturning in the back swing and Swinging too flat so what I mean by that is something like so and then the issue is when you start to move this way one your arms are going to

Get really trapped behind your body two you’re going to end up losing loads of hip depth so the way my hips are moving forward and then the problem is from here is that club is going to get really stuck so a couple of things going to happen you’re either going to get stuck

Massively swinging tempature the right or you’re going to have to pull down on the club and get the club really steep now that’s why I do a lot with swing buddy and the idea of the Swing Budd is a simple rope training a and if you were

To do a few Swings with the uh the swing buddy rope or any sort of rope training gug that you guys can get your hands on you just need to recoil it back and through a few times to understand the functionality of the arms and you’ll

Often find that it’s very much an up down and up movement like this okay now if I think about swinging massively from the inside and I move like this you get really stuck and now the right arm can’t find fire through and that’s why you end up having this real strong difficulty

When it comes to hitting driver and you end up with a really flat back swing getting stuck underneath and adding loads of Loft producing really high shots so question is how do we resolve it well let’s take a little bit of inspiration from holand holand talked

About the idea of the way that he hits up on the golf ball is he just keeps turning because if he moves his chest towards the target can you see the way the left shoulder starts to go up and behind your head and if that goes up and

Behind your head then all of a sudden you’re going to end up hitting more up on the ball through the idea of rotating as opposed to sort hanging back and doing this so using a bit of hovland’s inspiration using a bit of the idea of our swing buddy training aid friend

There what I tend to say to most golfers is start hitting driver off the floor first okay so that will make you think about the driver swing as not a driver swing but just as you’re using the driver so it’ll make you swing more back and through similar to what I’m

Demonstrating there so the way I’m turning through and then you can start to get that feeling of turning so I turn my chest through see and that’s producing nice strike with my driver and then you can incrementally high the tea so start with a lower T okay then

Progress it up so if you’re using the castle gradient T’s start with a low one start with something like the white TEEG then move up to a yellow or vice versa whichever way it progresses and then eventually you can move back up to a pink and even higher if you want to but

The point is you want to try and hit up on the driver not by leaning back and Swinging flat you want to always remember your arms are supposed to go up and then as you turn that’s what creates that shallowing hit think about it try the drills I’ll see you soon

  1. The thing with Hovland (and others like Rahm) is they have the strength to generate a lot of speed via body turn. Most people don't.

  2. What changes in setup are you making between a ground strike and teeing it up high? I’ve done this drill and often end up with very high strikes on the face. Struggling to get center strikes. Albeit high in the face is a much better mid compared to a low strike

  3. Great video, thanks Russell! Quick question… So I read that the average driver shaft length on the tour is 44.5", not sure if true. But… My driver shaft is 45.5" and it feels uncomfortable, to the point where I grip down to the golf pride logo and it's way easier to hit. Should I be cutting my driver shaft down to 44.5 or just learn to use it at 45.5?

  4. Pro's hit long is because they figure out the technique then smash hundreds of balls a day, every day of the week, all the while i sit at my desk working and then play a round once a week if i am lucky. They then get paid 500 million by some oil sheik and then dont give a crap.

  5. Thanks Russell

  6. Good stuff. I was struggling with driver distance mid season because I was setting up with more and more right side bend trying to launch the ball. Typical example of too much of a good thing. Lazy pull draws. So.. I practiced teeing the ball up low and started hitting down on the ball for a feel, eventually getting back to a slight upward strike. One range session will do it

  7. Useless. You should have focused on how it can help with your body motion and correct release. Not that you need anything like this if you are properly trained.

  8. Not only that but leaning backwards as you try to hit hard is a herniated disc and a half and an inflammation factory for me.
