Hello everyone this is Rick pic flyfish fanatic and welcome to my time bench uh today going to be tying a little ant pattern uh this can be used in the rivers and in The Lakes uh when the flying ants when they’re when they’re moving around when they’re flying doing

Their mating and stuff quite often they’ll fall into the river uh or into the Lakes um I use this one uh like I said both in the river and in the lakes in the river I like fishing these right close to the bank almost like a hopper

Right close to the bank so that when they when they fall off and stuff like that quite often they’ll try to land in those uh in the longer grass and stuff and then they’ll fall in and stuff so that’s where I like fishing these but uh

Yeah here let’s get going so in the vice today we have a HX FW 563 size8 it’s a short nymph barbless I do these in an eight and a 10 from Ax hooks um I use going to be using some black Nano silk from Seer fly as the

Thread um going to use some of the body materials here the stretch floss from hens in black for the uh two body sections and then for the um uh in between and a kind of a hot spot section going to be using some Vivas floss in uh bright

Red and then up front for a collar I’ll be using just some black Hackle so it’s fairly simple fly you just uh biggest thing with this with sorry with this fly is proportions trying to get the proportion of that uh the two front and back uh sections of the body uh in

Having that balanced and making it the same um having it this uh having it big enough so it looks right for um for the uh floss that goes in the middle because you want that floss you want this to be two bulbous sections front and back with a just a thin little

Center section there right so I’m going to stretch that and bring that back come back forward and just make sure this is tied down all the way okay so now I’m just going to wrap a little bit tight to start and then I’ll loosen off as you can see I’m loosening off a

Bit there and then I’ll tighten up again just to make that bulbus kind of then I’m going to come back over top of it Loose again and tighten as I go back make that a bit of a tapered back section and I’m going to come again forward a bit loosen that

Off tighten it up one last time back Tighter and then back forward again loosing it off as I come over really want a nice predominant back section now this is a fairly large one normally I would tie these smaller eights tens even twelves um I’m just doing I like doing

Bigger ones for the camera it’s just it’s obviously easier for me to tie but it’s also easier for you guys to see so now a piece of the floss now here’s where you got to be a little bit careful because this floss obviously can Fray quite easily and you don’t want a thick

Section here you just want a you just you want the color that’s it right so I will that’s it it’s all I want and I’m actually going to go back over top of that a bit with the uh with the stretch floss when I do my front for uh front section

Okay now we’ll grab my stretch floss wherever I put it there it is tie that in right up front here I’m just trying to catch that little tail in that okay same thing tight to start and loosen it off and tighten it up and come back loosen It Off tighten it

Up really tighten that up there and then loosen it off back again tight turn my vice H that off I’m going to get my Hackle just a little bit of wax my Hackle ready I’m not going to put it on yet cuz what I want to do here is I’m

Going to take my UV resin my golf thinman here if I can get it open and I’m just going to coat this whole body and I want to keep those proportions so I want to I’m going to coat the whole thing but I want to make sure that that Center

Is not as thick so I will move that with the Bodkin here I definitely I want those two sections right so just take your time here make sure it’s all covered nicely and then hit it with your UV light now my UV light is still I’m doing a

Bunch of videos all at once here today my UV light has kind of died on me so um kind of using two I have to get uh new batteries for them I don’t have any in my house just going to do that for a second

Here I’m going to put a little bit more on this side I’ve just noticed that this is a little bare on this side so I want this nicely covered I might have to stop tying flies that need UV for the day until I get uh new batteries cuz this is not drying very

Well I do have another one but uh it’s buried in my travel kit so hopefully that’s enough we’ll see it should be okay okay it’s not perfect but for video sakes it’ll be fine so now going to just attach my Hackle right at the front here three to four

Turns tighten that up now straight push this all back you want to force that back a little bit okay whip finish finish whip finish cut off my thread excess Hackle and there’s your ant there’s your finished ant I said pretty simple uh it takes a little bit

Of time making sure those uh those proportions are right on those uh on that on those body portions because you want that definite hump right you want that that that section so now sometimes what I’ll also do is I’ll take Hackle and I’ll put another I’ll put a Hackle

Here after the black before the red put another Hackle there and then one there um just to kind of imitate those legs but this is uh I’ve had just as much success on this one so righty hope you guys enjoyed that one um if you did

Give her a thumbs up if you subscribed awesome uh and uh yeah leave some comments let me know what you guys want to see what you guys want me to do that kind of stuff t l Everyone

  1. Nice fly, Rick, guessing fished as a wet fly or will the hackle keep it in the surface film imitating an ant that’s fallen from the reeds onto the water?
