BILLIONS of dollars worth of contracts were handed out in the NBA in the 2010s… but not all of them were created equal. As the salary cap spiked and teams were rushing to put together championship contenders, some franchises, quite frankly, RUINED their teams with some HORRENDOUS contracts. From injuries to poor play to just downright TERRIBLE decision making – let’s go through the WORST NBA contracts of the 2010s…

Billions of dollars worth of contracts were handed out in the NBA in the 2010s but not all of them were created equal as the salary cap spiked and teams were rushing to put together Championship contenders some franchises ruined their teams with some horrendous contracts from injuries to poor play to just

Downright terrible decision-making let’s go through the worst NBA contracts of the 2010s first up of the decade is in 2012 we find the Brooklyn Nets in a bit of a weird situation they were an upand cominging team with an aggressive owner that wanted them to improve quickly so

Much that they traded away a ton of future Assets in 2011 for Darren Williams from the Utah Jazz they were rumored to be interested in a handful of other stars at the time as well other than just Williams including Dwight Howard and Carmelo Anthony but they

Ended up Landing a guy that at the time was one of the best guards in the league and someone that has been mostly forgotten about because of how his career is about to go down in Brooklyn but now the contract in the 2012 offseason Williams needed a new deal and

The Nets had to give it to him because they could not afford to lose him in free agency and just trading away so many assets and then letting him walk would have been a complete disaster so they signed him to a 5-year $100 million deal and at the time there was really no

Sign that this was going to be a bad decision by the Nets Williams had just averaged 21 points and nearly nine assists per game in over 50 games the year before and it looked like they could add some Talent around him and maybe become a fringe Contender eventually the problem was pretty much

Everything went wrong for the Nets from this point on Williams was still pretty good in the 2012 13 season but was starting to slow down a bit and then the Nets made some really aggressive mive moves by trading for Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce which of course didn’t work

Out in the long term but more importantly for this contract Williams play began to sharply decline once they made those aggressive moves he struggled not only with injuries but also aging into his 30s as a point guard and overall just a loss of confidence at times going from an all-nba caliber

Player to just an okay starter in a span of like 20 months a shocking collapse for a guy that the Nets had invested so much in ultimately this isn’t the worst contract of the decade because William will was still solid for a bit after the deal but the trade in the contract for

Him was really what started a terrible series of events for the Nets next up now is 2013 in a contract that a ton of people forget about Josh Smith to the Detroit Pistons at the time the team was trying to rebuild after breaking down the championship winning rosters of the

Mid-2000s and were clearly one of the worst teams in the league averaging under 30 wins a season for threee streight going into the 2013 off season but there was some Talent there most notably two highly drafted front Court players in Andre Drummond and Greg Monroe both of which had establish

Themselves as legit pieces of the future for the team so going into the off season you’d assume that the Pistons would try and build out the rest of the roster but no they signed Josh Smith a super athletic power forward with great defensive tools to a 4year $54 million

Contract which might not seem like a ton now but with where the salary cap was at the time it was a massive deal and what did Detroit get for all that money well Smith played 105 games with the Pistons they were just as bad from a record standpoint before and after bringing him

In and they actively limited the development of Monroe and Drummond by trying to play all three of those guys all of which were clearly meant to play either at the four or the five together a ton in those 105 games now it’s easy of course to say in hindsight that this

Was a bad move but at the time everyone hated this deal Smith was a good player but his skill set just made absolutely no sense with the Pistons roster and the money that they paid him limited what they could do to improve the team over the following few seasons as they wait

Him using the stretch provision in the second year of his deal meaning that a portion of his contract would sit on the payroll for years afterwards meanwhile Smith career was pretty much over when he left the Pistons he did have some moments in Houston over the following

Few seasons but his lack of spacing as the game really started to modernized really held him back as he aged playing just those 105 games that I mentioned in Detroit then 113 more with various teams meaning that the Pistons paid all of that money to make their team worse to

Pay a guy that played less than 250 more NBA games after signing the deal and whose money was on the books for years afterwards truly a disaster of a contract but we move on now to an offseason that we are going to be talking about for a while in this video

The infamous summer of 2016 by far the worst offseason for NBA contracts in the history of the league unless of course you’re one of the players getting these big deals essentially the league messed up and in one offseason in 2016 there was a massive spike in salary cap space

For every single team in the league which meant that not only did the Warriors somehow have money to sign Kevin Durant but more importantly for this video teams went crazy spending the extra money especially on role players that certainly didn’t deserve it which brings us to Tima mozgov signing with

The LA Lakers at the time he had had a solid career to that point in the NBA he was a role player big played 15 to 20 minutes a night for various teams not being a huge piece on any one of them but this is all you really need to know

About the contract at 29 years old in the 20156 season mozgov averaged six points and four rebounds per game and less than 20 minutes per game for the for the Cavs and yes he helped them win the 2016 title and then a few months later the LA Lakers gave him a 4-year

$64 million contract it’s honestly like they were just putting the six points and the four rebounds together and then that’s how they came up with the $64 Million number like mozgov was a fine player a borderline starter at the five spot but in no scenario was he ever

Worth that much money certainly not coming off of a below average season as he turned 30 years old and to make things worse mozgov’s career was basically over when when he signed the deal he played Just 85 more NBA games and lasted just one season in La before

Being dumped to the Nets along with D’Angelo Russell who was a recent top two pick just to get rid of the money and basically two seasons after signing that massive contract mozgov had played his last game in the NBA and even crazier is that this wasn’t even the

Worst contract that the Lakers gave out that off season which brings us to the second disaster signing in 2016 for the Lakers lual Deng now in comparison to mozgov Deng was a dramatically better player at the time that he signed the contract and throughout his career he

Was one of the best defensive Wings in the league for years and a great two-way player as well which made him valuable as a free agent he spent the prior few seasons with the heat and was still very productive however there were some signs that he was slowing down as he turned 30

Years old and of course the Lakers completely ignored that and handed out a 4-year $72 million contract to Deng anyway the biggest issue for Deng in La was availability as he played Just 56 games in year one and one game in year two for the Lakers before finishing his

Career in Minnesota the following year playing around 20 games to be fair Deng was durable the prior few seasons in Miami playing in over 70 games each year and really he was able to fight through some unfortunate medical situations on and off the floor to still be productive

As he entered his 30s which is what earned him the deal but in terms of value provided for the money that the Lakers spent this is still a terrible contract and just like Josh Smith earlier the Lakers would have his money on their books for years as they used

The stretch provision to wave dang and his money didn’t fully go away until 2022 years after signing the initial contract moving on now to the contract that might hold the title for the one that everybody hated the most at the time Nick Batum he was of course a 2016

Free agent and the Hornets had put themselves in a really difficult spot trading for him a year before in 2015 knowing that he would need a new deal similar to the Darren Williams situation earlier with Brooklyn this was especially risky because Batum and his agent know that the Hornets of all teams

Can’t risk losing him for nothing in free agency after giving up assets to get him and on top of that with the cap situation in 2016 being what it was butum was about to get paid from somebody plenty of teams had money and he certainly did signing a 5-year $120

Million Max extension to stay in Charlotte which at the time made him one of the highest paid players in the entire league now to be fair Nick Batum was a good player and he continued to be for at least a little bit on this contract but by no means was he

Considered one of the best wings in the league but now he was being paid like one and the Hornets were coming off of a 48- win season and of course they wanted to keep keep that going but unfortunately for them they got exactly one good season out of bomb after he

Signed this contract one season that looked like the one he had put up the year before to earn the deal he put up career numbers in the 201617 season but then began to struggle with injuries over the next few years and the worst that it got was in the 20189 season just

A few years after signing that Max contract Nick patum was averaging less than 10 points per game ultimately he would stick around in Charlotte until 2020 when the team decided to wave him and move on from the contract and the team success that they had hoped to

Sustain from the 20156 season just never came back and although Batum was still a little productive compared to the other entries on this list that isn’t really saying that much this is a perfect example of why the summer of 2016 was so bad for teams good players like Batum

Ended up getting paid way too much money which hindered their ability to build good teams and in many cases like Batum those guys broke down to much lesser versions of themselves after signing the contract anyway speaking of that next up is Joo Kim Noah signing with with the

New York Knicks in 2016 in his nine seasons in Chicago Noah was an awesome player one of my favorites to watch back then a great defender high energy and a really underrated passer but even at his Peak durability was an issue for him and after those nine great Seasons with the

Bulls he entered into 2016 free agency as a 30-year-old big that had clearly lost a step and played Just 29 total games the year before averaging 4.3 points per game so of course the Knicks decided that that player was worth 4 years and 72 million granted this isn’t

Even the worst big man signing of this particular offseason but the signs of decline were so clearly there for Noah that it’s pretty shocking that the Knicks took the leap anyway predictably he struggled to stay on the floor and the contract was a complete disaster playing just a 100 more games total in

His career after signing the deal only 53 of which were with the Knicks in an offseason full of bad decisions this is one of the ones that was most predictably a bad choice at the time and if you thought we were done with the summer of 2016 we certainly are not not

I’m not sure where I would rank all these contracts in order but this next one would certainly be near the top of the list Chandler Parsons signing with the Memphis grizley now I want to make something really clear here for his first few seasons in the league Chandler

Parsons was really good he was a bigger Wing that could shoot was a good to Great passer and the kind of player that every single team in the league would want and initially he was pretty durable as well in 2014 he signed a three-year $46 million contract with Dallas and was

100% worth it and then going into the 2016 offseason it looked like he was is going to continue to have a productive career the only real red flag was he did have some injury issues especially chronic knee problems that would continue to be a problem for him but

That didn’t stop the Memphis Grizzlies from signing him to a 4-year $94 million contract now yes in hindsight the injury should have been more of a red flag as both the Rockets and the Mavs were totally fine letting him go to a new team on a big deal but again at the time

Parsons was good unfortunately for him and The Grizzlies this was just a absolutely terrible deal he never even played 40 games in a single season for them as he dealt with a variety of injuries and even when he did play he clearly wasn’t the same guy ultimately

He played Just 95 games with Memphis so they essentially paid a million dollar per game that he played and after 3 years he was gone from the Grizzlies and just played a handful of games with the Hawks before his NBA career was over this is always going to be such a weird

Career to look back on because Parsons was a second round pick that came in as an older rookie and was really good but just didn’t have much longevity and this contract is certainly one of the wor not only of this decade but maybe of all

Time moving on now to kind of a weird one bismack bomo signing with the magic in 2016 he was a highly drafted defensive big that the Hornets picked in 2011 and was basically just a role player his first 5 years in the league and a notoriously bad offensive player

As well he was playable because of his defense and his rebounding but that was about it and although in the 20156 season he did have his best year as a pro that wasn’t saying that much he did play all 82 games averaged 5 and a half points eight rebounds one .6 blocks per

Game in 22 minutes which was solid but then as he entered free agency the magic signed him to a 4year 72 million contract again he averaged like five points per game the year before this this is just another example of how the salary cap Spike made things weird in

2016 this was just kind of the going rate for good role player bigs $18 million a year which was only possible because of the extra money lying around but these were still terrible choices bio was fine for two seasons in Orlando basically rep ating the season that he

Had the year before with the Raptors before ending up back in Charlotte then Phoenix and then Memphis and honestly he’s been solid in each spot just doing his job as a backup big but just like the other deals on this list it’s pretty funny how he ended up with such a big

Contract now next time I’m also going to throw in an honorable mention on this list because at this point we finally do have to leave the summer 2016 behind but not before talking about Yan Mimi signing a 4year 64 million dooll contract with the Wizards I can

Basically say almost all of the exact same things that I said about M that I did about biombo so I’m not going to bother but again these role player bigs were getting paid that summer and it wouldn’t feel right to have this list and not have Mimi listed which brings us

Unfortunately for wizards fans to another disaster contract for them John Wall now to be fair a few years into his career you never would have guessed that he would end up on a list like this the first overall pick in 2010 wall developed into one of the best guards in

The league over his first few seasons a five-time All-Star career that culminated in an awesome 201617 season where he made third Team all NBA in placed seventh in MVP voting he was Lightning Fast crazy athletic a great defender when he wanted to be unbelievably strong getting to the rim

All while developing into a good passer as well the problem for him and the Wizards though was two things that all NBA selection that I mentioned and then injuries so for all NBA the way that it works essentially as it relates to contracts is a player can get a big

Contract an extra big contract called a supermax if they meet certain criteria and one of those criteria is an all-nba selection in the season immediately prior to signing the deal which meant that in 2017 when wall was eligible for a new deal after making all MBA in the

201617 season he was eligible for a super max contract and once a player becomes eligible they basically always get the deal which wall did a 4-year $170 million contract that was one of the biggest in league history at the time now even though plenty of people were concerned about that big of a

Number going to a guy that was yes really good and still young and developing but not quite a top tier guard yet was concerning while was still a young player that looked to beyond the path to Greatness and things were rounding into form in Washington around

Wall and Bradley Beal in the back court but then disaster struck over the following two seasons wall struggle with knee injuries that required surgery and then a freak accident at home caused him to tear his Achilles in 2019 and at that point his Wizards and honestly NBA career was pretty much over Washington

Moved on he played 40 games in Houston then another 34 with the Clippers and that was pretty much it so after signing him to a supermax the Wizards got 73 more Gam games out of wall total before he basically was out of the league completely now this is kind of in its

Own category on this list because even though the super max was a lot wall easily could have been worth that money over the next few years if he stayed healthy and continued to improve and obviously the knee injury stuff could have scared the team off but like what

Were they supposed to do just let him leave as a free agent a crazy set of circumstances led to this contract that seemed to be totally fine becoming arguably the worst of the entire decade the cap spike in 2016 the all-nba season the supermax the injuries both all off

The floor all leading to a once promising career completely falling apart right as wall hit his Prime and last of now on the list is another former first overall pick with a Max contract Andrew Wiggins as crazy as it might seem now that Wiggins helped the Warriors win a title his contract was

Once considered one of the worst in the entire league and the story of how he got the deal is honestly pretty similar to walls he started his career off really well statistically looking every bit like the first overall pick that he was putting up great scoring numbers on

Some bad Timberwolves teams and when a highly drafted player plays well he gets paid so Minnesota signed him to a 5year $147 million contract in 2017 the problem was things changed pretty dramatically by that point with the Timberwolves they brought in Jimmy Butler and Tom Tibido and suddenly they

Needed to play winning basketball which Wiggins just wasn’t used to he suddenly wasn’t nearly as helpful when it was about more than just putting up scoring numbers and those numbers and his confidence really started to fall off even after Butler eventually requested and was granted a trade from the team

That period of his career was so damaging to his confidence and the contract looked so bad the Minnesota was actually willing to use a first round pick to dump his contract to the Warriors and get D’Angelo Russell in exchange in 2020 where he did turn his

Career around to help the Warriors win a title and more recently he’s had some struggles in Golden State making his career that much more difficult to figure out as we look back on it I did still decide to put him on the list because anytime you’re basically salary

Dumping a $150 million contract for a former first overall pick things haven’t gone well but given that he was at least somewhat productive still throughout the contract it isn’t as bad as it once looked and that is what happened to the worst NBA contracts of the 2010s

  1. Dallas offered Nerlens Noel 70 million guaranteed and he turned it down.

That there, let me know Dallas can't recruit anybody in free agency🤷‍♂️

  2. Josh Smith had such a weird career. After a while he just literally chose to be a bad player…. I just wish his coaches could have said if you shoot a 3 you’re coming out of the game and not going back in. Like seriously what was he doing? He can’t possibly have thought he was a good 3 point shooter. Just WHYYYY

  3. Deron Williams had surgery on both ankles and his right wrist which is his shooting hand, tendinitis in his foot after he signed that contract. He fell off because he couldn't stay healthy.

That's like saying that Derrick Rose had a bad contract with the Bulls because he tore his ACL, then his hamstring after he signed it. Injuries happen.

  4. With regards to Deng only playing 1 game in his second year with the Lakers, he was healthy most of the season. They just chose to sit him out and tank.

  5. i feel like you neglected to mention that biyombo also had a massive playoff run for the raptors where he had a couple 20 point games that led to that higher price point of the contract

  6. it’s straight up disrespectful,
    putting Wall on this list.
He did so much for that franchise,
    he deserved every single cent.
It’s not his fault he got injured,
John Wall was a top five point guards in his prime.
He carried us through a lot of losing years.

  7. There are errors in the section about John Wall.

13:35 “…he was developing into a good passer, as well.”

Wall was regarded as one of the league’s premier passers from the moment he was drafted. He had just finished his third consecutive season averaging 10+ assists by the time that you judge he was “developing into a good passer.”

14:10 “… plenty of people were concerned about [$170 million] going to a player who was… not quite a top tier guard yet…”

You said it yourself… Wall had just made third team All-NBA. In a league with Westbrook (Prime Thunder), Curry (Prime), Isaiah Thomas (Prime Celtics), CP3 (Clippers), Kyrie (Cavs), Damian Lillard, Mike Conley, Jeff Teague, Jrue Holiday, Kyle Lowry, and more! And, I believe the All-NBA teams were split into “Guards, Forwards, and Centers,” so he was also competing with shooting guards… too many of which to name.

I don’t recall any hesitation or backlash about paying Wall that money. The Wizards would have been insane to let him walk.

  8. To add some context for Washington in 2016 and 2017: During the 2016 summer, Mahinmi was over 30 years old and injured at the time, and aside from the previous season with Indiana, he spent most of his career as a backup C (solid player though, who played for the 2010-11 Mavs). Washington signed him to become their backup C, but in doing so, they paid him more than their own starter, Marcin Gortat. Over $30M was going to the C position, as they house 3 guys over 30 – Jason Smith (about 31 at the time) was signed shortly after Mahinmi.

Following the 2016-17 season, Washington got into a bidding war with Brooklyn for Otto Porter. In that bidding war, Washington threw down a max contract offer for Porter, causing Brooklyn to walk away. With that signing, Porter became the highest paid player on the team, making about $24-27M/yr – more than Wall and Beal (at the time). Keep in mind, that during that 2016-17, Washington traded a 1st round pick (which became Jarrett Allen – a young, defensive-minded C that Washington so badly needed) to get Bojan Bogdanovic for about 6 months, while Kelly Oubre (a recent 1st round pick) waited in the wings – both guys played the same position as Porter.

John Wall also signed his supermax extension during that 2017 summer, but the extension did not kick in for another 2 seasons, leaving Otto Porter was the highest paid player on the team during that time. The extension was a risk that sadly did not pay off, but the contracts that the front office already gave out severely limited the moves Washington could make to improve the roster. It was especially true for the contracts given to Mahinmi and Porter, because they were not desirable at their price points.

  9. These are not disasters. 😂 If you are watching NBA in 2015-2016, you should know that cap space sky rocketed AND there were no notable stars in free agency. Teams had 2 options – pay players, or pay fines for not spending their cap space. Almost all of these players are traded away after 1-2 years for cap space.

    It was a business strategy.

  10. I remember every single one of these signings since I was high school during all of them and even back then I knew all of these deals were going to be horrible. 😂

  11. Didnt Josh smith aka j-smooth lose all of his money and is playing for ice cube's BIG3 basketbal (which is awesome by the way) fornlike $50,000 a summer….imagine going from 50 million a year to 50,000….
