Hello everybody Welcome to the hockey show my name is Roy B me that is David D over here this guy right here right here to my left he works for the hockey news and now I turn to my left to this camera how you doing well done uh the Florida

Panthers coming off of a five game Road Trip they went out west they started in Columbus and then they W that game by the way and that the whole kafuffle between granson and cousins obviously we talked about that one last week uh they went to Seattle they lost that one went

To Vancouver they lost that one they did went to Edmonton they won and lost in Calgary now they are back home uh we are recording this on Thursday and they are playing the St Louis Blues on Thursday so we are not going to get to that game but let’s

Focus on this road trip they won two out out of five they went two and three no overtime games two three and0 they uh got four points out of 10 and Paul Marie said that this was going to be the most important road trip of the season he

Wasn’t lying they could have came out dominant a big momentum shift not even a big momentum shift some major momentum for the Panthers could have came out of this road trip yeah unfortunately it looks like they’re just keeping Pace now bit of a mixed bag on the trip too

Because you had that great win in Columbus where you know the C fuffle great great word drop by the way thank you um spoted Tears by the way well then they went to Seattle where they played a pretty solid game that it didn’t go their way Seattle got some lucky bounces

They got Seattle got outshot like two to one by Florida and Florida end up losing they had Joey great goal tending effort for Seattle then they went to Vancouver on Luongo night and got kind of curb stomped a little bit by the Kuts they looked horrible one of the worst games of the

Season they bounced back as you’d expect them to with a solid night in Edmonton I’m going to look at my camera too uh and which that was a really good game because the Oilers had been playing well of late they’re trying to turn their season around so you kind of had that

Going for you and then they wrapped it up in Calgary a very mixed bad game again in Calgary because there were times where Forida didn’t look great there were times where fora absolutely outs skated Calgary and so now they’re coming home where they’ve been a good

Home team they’ve got the games uh right before the holiday break they got the blues on Thursday night as we record this and then they got the rematch with the Vegas Golden Nights on Saturday which should be fun well it seems that just like last year the Panthers have

Done something that they haven’t done something that’s lose three games in a row yeah it’s been backtack losses yes but they have found a way to get back and win the next game well how you think that’s going about I think it’s great I think after last season when they didn’t

Win or lose any consecutive games it was just very up and down up and down up and down the entire year now this year you’ve got a much more consistent team they’ll drop two games in a row as we’ve seen but the way that they snap back

Into form in Edmonton is something I think we can expect here on I think this is the kind of team where you’re going to see more winning streaks than losing streaks just B based on how deep and consistent they’ve been they are going through injuries right here right now uh

Anton lundell is not in the lineup he won’t be playing against St Louis uh how’s the lineup looking I mean this is why the Panthers have this deep forward group that you can afford to lose a guy like Anto LEL or Jonah gavic as there’s been like a a flu bug that’s going

Through the Panthers locker room but fortunately they’ve got that you can whether it’s calling up guys like will Lockwood who’s up from the AHL right now or filling in with Kevin stenland Steven Loren these great depth players that Florida added in the off season so this is where they Flex those those depth

Muscles but this is the expectation of a hockey season you’re going to go through injuries and illnesses all right that’s the uh Panthers update there now let’s go across the league the Ottawa Senators have fired the head coach they did that last week actually DJ Smith is out of

Job they brought back an old friend though former Panthers coach as well Jack Montan and they also it’s a HomeTown move made Daniel off alfredson an assistant coach what do you think of the move also that jaff capuano another former NHL coach with playoff experience as an assistant on that roster but yeah

You say they brought in an Old Coach Jack martan 71 years old he he’s no spring chicken anymore no you know this is a I guess he’s no Summit chicken either this was surprising just because the Ottawa players loved DJ Smith you know almost said Matthew KCK Fredy

Kachuck Tim sta have gone to bat for him saying that they were surprised that they loved him but look Ottawa is two years in a row now that they’ve struggled where they’ve supposed to been a playoff team so it’s time to [ __ ] or get off the pot right yeah uh that

That’s so disappointing like I really expected Ottawa to be on an upswing this season and that is the complete opposite of what what has happened just just the complete opposite it’s really shocking to me still waiting for this Atlantic division Resurgence of teams like Ottawa and buffalo and Detroit who we’re going

To talk about in a second they were all expected to make this big step forward and still once again we’re looking at a very topheavy Atlantic division speaking of Detroit Patrick Kane since he’s entered the Red Wings lineup the team is w six in one what is going on in Detroit

I think Patrick Kane wasn’t the Savior like when we looked at Patrick Kane as somebody that the Panthers for example could add this was a complimentary guy we know what he’s done in the past but he’s not the player he once was and we saw that at towards the end of his

Tenure in Chicago and you can blame the hip injury all you want but this is a guy who’s in his late 30s now he’s had his career success and expecting him to show up in Detroit and just be this amazing savior like this player that he

Was in Chicago 10 years ago was just unreasonable Detroit’s struggling to put the puck in the net they’re struggling to keep the puck out of the net and uh you know for Patrick Kane’s sake what does he have six points two goals on 26 shots minus five in eight games that’s

You know middle six fine whatever but it’s not the guy who’s going to save your season and save your team and that I think was the expectation with Kane it might still turn around but I’m not expecting it there um he scored two goals two goals so he’s almost caught up

With Alexander over five this season what is going on with Alex I don’t know what’s going on with Al I age catching up with Alex maybe because it’s been like how has he been able to be this 40 goal scorer year in and year out and now

All of a sudden you know what is he 38 years old he turned 38 a couple months ago all that gray hair but he had gray hair when he was winning the Stanley Cup and and you know drinking Bud Light out of the fountains with the Stanley Cup or

Whatever he was doing but yeah it’s just you know we we were talking about oetkin like he was going to catch Wayne Gretzky’s goal scoring record of 894 he’s up up to 827 but he’s also up to 38 years old and he’s barely scoring with it five goals through 29 games that’s so

Unov likee yeah the pace on that on eventually I don’t even I don’t think I can actually say eventually now the pace on him catching way gresy is getting a lot more difficult now yeah well it depends is he G to keep scoring five goals in 30 games because if so he’s

Gonna have to play until he’s Y Mar yar’s age speaking of which he just played his first game y yoger again again his first game of the season again this is like his 50 no I mean it’s like it’s 30th pro hockey season or whatever

It is the guy’s 51 years old we we love him here in South Florida I think anywhere that he touched in his career whether it’s Pittsburgh or Washington or New York or anywhere that he played Philadelphia Boston well where is he playing now he’s playing for cadno the

Team in the cze extraa that he owns his hometown team uh he had an assist he played in their I think it was their season OA yesterday points he had an assist that left-handed shot still out there he played almost 14 minutes I mean this guy’s still doing it they need to

Let him into the Hall of Fame while he’s still playing they need toak great presedent and I mean the guy’s in his 50s already like just do it all right uh this week I was in the turkey the took off the turkey Cookoff between myself and Greg Cody we’re about to toss the

Turkey and I was I was very jealous that I wasn’t here for that I love food I love your cooking and I was with you that you were disrespected that that your cooking was not given its due d right so it was good to see that the

Voting went your way but I was not happy that I wasn’t here for it well lucky luckily we haven’t talked to Turkey yet because we have a sample here for you and we’re going to close out this first SE thing we’re going to close out this first segment with you trying out this

Turkey now what do you think here I oh smell I think it smells really flavorful that was what we were saying before it was like it’s the flavor that I’m looking for I’m looking for some good seasoned turkey so let I got it right here I’ll show it to the camera this is

This is all that was left two days later two days after the Turk off I was looking to get really really picked at this turkey and now he’s just taking a true now that’s good flavor yeah that’s what I’m talking about and look two days later and it’s still got some juice to

It the unfortunate thing is it has to go we can’t keep a turkey for more than a week that’s no but I I feel bad for my aunt Mitsy now cuz now her turkey is going to be compared to this oh yeah and this has got some flavor Roy I’m not

Surprised but I’m grateful to be tasting it but yeah this is not not surprising at all this is Roy Bellamy cooking 101 but yeah this is delicious I’ll give you the recipes once we get out of here uh this is a great way to wrap up our the first year of our show All right it’s time for the 10-minute misconduct and we have a guy who has doled out plenty of misconducts over his long career we have former official Tim Peele Tim Peele is a co-host of the uh Snipes and Stripes uh podcast with Jeremy ronic and uh that is an

Interesting I would say unlikely Duro to get together and start a podcast how’d you guys get together yeah thanks for having me on Roy and David uh Jr as you know he’s been a very colorful uh personality throughout his career and uh he’s he’s hasn’t been one to shy away from

Controversy uh such as myself I’ve certainly been embroiled in a bunch of it over my career and uh I always had a tremendous amount of respect for Jr when he played he’s one of the best uh us born hockey players is he’s in the US

Hockey Hall of Fame I think he has the numbers to be in the the big Hockey Hall of Fame out of in Toronto um but uh yeah we became friends we became more friends after after I retired and played some golf together and hung out and uh he’s

Just a great guy and we’re we’re having a lot of fun I want to get into the officiating aspect of the game right now and there was an article that just came out today uh from the athletic Uh Kevin Curt says that there’s been a decrease

In body checking uh a lot of the players seem to either be scared of being hit and they are unable to defend themselves or it could be the officiating uh I have a chart right here uh you can put it on the screen for us boys uh there’s a

Chart that shows over the last 15 years that there has been a sharp increase in body checking between 2007 and 2015 but since 2015 there has been a sharp decline in body checking Tim what do you think is attributing to that yeah Roy that’s a great point that you brought up

And and uh I’ve got my a couple different theories on it and we Jr and I have actually talked about it a lot on the show and you know a good friend of mine Kelly Chase he was an enforcer uh in the NHL for the blues and and a

Couple other teams and and I was texting with them the other day because I was at the Blues Blackhawks game in Chicago and I said I think there’s been four body checks thrown tonight and this is a rivalry you know Chicago St Louis this this is a rivalry we used to have bench

Clearing brawls I’m not saying we need to go back to that we evolved as as a society but the point is is that in this game we had four checks and I think they were all thrown by the same guy brayen Shen the captain of the Blues who leads

By example our game I love our game I love our game I love the speed of the game we have so many young stars in the game but our game is starting to turn into a skills competition like you would see at an All-Star game yeah and and

That that article and that graphic that you showed me is hang on there is not a lot of physical it’s not the officiating we would love you know I even you know I’ve only been retired for two years and there were games I’m like my son could referee this game because there’s

Nothing going on here tonight there’s no intensity and I get it it’s a tough sport to do that to maintain that over an 82 game schedule it’s so difficult for these guys it’s hard on their bodies but we’ve got away from the physicality and we can’t take that out of the game

Because that physicality creates emotion and emotion is good for our game now Tim you’ve kind of had you have an interesting perspective being an official of of the league and how it’s been perceived over the years is there an era from an officiating standpoint that you think like this is the best

Time of the League this is when it was officiated the best this is when it was called the best the game flowed the best like I don’t know if I’m putting you on the spot but is there a time that you thought that that maybe was the best of

For officiating yeah no for sure you know I I asked Marty bder this the day you know Marty’s the Hall of Fame Goenda devils and he’s got so many young superstars on his on his team and I said I think the way what’s happening now is for example my son Bronson’s 11 lives here in St Louis we live in St Louis he’s on the ice two or three times a

Week in the morning at 6:00 am taking taking uh private lessons on top of his practices and unfortunately you need to do that to keep up to up to the Joneses and if you don’t you you know you fall back and you’re not able to make these

Triaa teams and so on and so there’s been so much uh emphasis put on skills that we’ve got away like Roy was asking me about the physicality and I think the best ERA of that where you combine the skill and the physicality was in the late 90s early 2000s with the Jeremy

Ronx the Keith kachuck those guys like the you know Eric lindross you know in Philadelphia we had the Legion of Doom Eric Lindros John lir and Michael renberg these guys were all 64 but they were also skilled and they could just they could check you up to you know the

Third row of the of the seats and that was a great era of when like I said earlier combining physicality with the skill of the game we’ve got away from that and and I don’t know how we get it back clearly does a difference uh in officiating between the regular season

And the playoffs what would you say to a person that says that officiating especially in the playoffs is all about managing the game Flow well it’s uh let’s a bit of a I know where you’re coming from Roy but it’s a bit of a misnomer on the on the

Uh penalties the amount of penalties uh being called I I said this last uh spring on a show and I had the stats and and I said uh you know who asked me it was Paul Binet and of course it was yeah of course it

Was and and I said to him I said actually Biz you’re wrong I said here’s the stats first round of the playoffs there’s actually more penalties called in the first round than there is in the regular season what happens is is the first round is to me is the best hockey

To watch because you’ve got 16 teams the the bottom six eight teams that that made it in the playoffs they still think that they have a chance you have guys in the first round of the playoffs that didn’t throw a body check all year that are now checking in the first round of

The playoffs so what happens is we go from 16 teams to eight teams a little less penalties are called in the second round because it’s there’s we don’t have that uh and you know that that teams that finished 14 15 16 16 that that say you know what the only way that we’re

Going to be be able to beat the year for example Columbus beat the Tampa Bay Lightning huge upset beat him four straight torella was the coach and they beat them by pure physicality and so what happens in the second round and the third round you have less penalties

Called because it’s now the game it’s it’s hard to explain but it’s now it’s kind of opened up more open up more and guys know we can’t take penalties we you know for example the Islanders were playing Tampa a couple years ago I guarantee you Barry trots went into the

Dressing room for the New York Islanders and said we cannot take a penalty tonight because the Tampa Bay P power play will just destroy us so and then what happens when you get to the Stanley Cup finals the the referees are instructed to call the same standard but

You have less penalties again because guys know they cannot take a penalty because it may cost them a game and it may cost them that series Tim the other day I was listening back to one of your shows you were talking about a couple recent suspensions uh with uh David

Prawn being suspended six games for the cross Che and Tim Zu with the Senators and then Eric Bron suspension that we’re a little bit familiar with uh from what happened with him and Nick cousins last week uh right just wanted to kind of ask you to follow up on that just because it

Seems like the consensus would be that you want them you want the lead to come down in these kind of things but at the same time that might not be it’s very Case by case right yeah yeah no it is David and and uh we’ll touch on the

Piran one first you know David is uh uh I know him very well he’s a great young he’s a great player uh not young anymore but I ref when he when he broke into the league and and uh uh he he’s played 1100 games in the National Hockey League and

He’s never been suspended once so he’s not that type of player that takes liberties with with uh his opponents um he sees his captain Dylan lar and Lane I think he was unconscious on the ice and yes was that a mistake yes it was but you know you have to I think we

There’s emotion in the game the emotion obviously took over uh for him and I felt like six games so we hit Aram uh Zub Zub defenseman for Ottawa Zub came out and played the next shift okay he was not hurt yeah it it probably stung

Him at the time but he came out and played the next shift so he wasn’t that that hurt and for him to get six games I thought was too much I could have lived with three I think three everybody could have lived with but I thought six was

Too much and with gab Branson you know and this may not be popular with you because cousins plays for Florida but uh you know he took a liberty with gab Branson from behind I am shocked that that cousins didn’t get suspended for that hit and what was more shocked

In was he called the referees on the ice called a fem minute major uh for checking from behind and I really I I was watching the game I’m like that’s a great call uh gab Branson’s hurt and and so now with the with the NHL whenever

You call a major penalty or a match penalty a five minute penalty it’s now reviewed with the Situation Room in Toronto so the referees got on the headset uh talked to the situation room they decided that it was a two-minute minor and so so what happens later on

Ganson wants to get his his piece of Flesh and he goes at cousins and I don’t have a problem at all with what he did but if they had stuck with the five INE game cousins would have been out of the game cab Branson doesn’t have an

Opportunity to get him in that game maybe he gets them later on in the season maybe maybe it it it it’s not forgotten but he just he doesn’t do anything later on in the year but what happens is he doesn’t get kicked out of the game so he says I’m going to take

Matters into my own hands and he gets a one game ension for what he did have you noticed an uptick on boarding penalties yeah you know what uh you’re you’re absolutely right Roy and and uh we you know there was one the other night a Vander Kane hit uh uh I think it

Was duham Duan from Minnesota and everybody the Minnesota fans were up in you know they were all up in arms that that there wasn’t a penalty on this play but the problem is I didn’t think it was a penalty and the problem is these defensemen and it’s at all levels of

Hockey now it’s not just in the NHL it’s it’s at all levels they don’t protect themselves when they’re going back to to play the puck and every defenseman if you you know back in the day the Hatcher brothers and and and Pronger and and uh Al mcginness they’re going back for the

Puck they’re looking over their shoulder and they’ve got their stick up in case you know they get hit from behind so that they can brace themselves against the glass so uh I there has been uptick but I I don’t see it being an epidemic and a problem and uh but the players

Have to also you know uh be able to uh protect themselves and learn how to take a hit Tim before we let you know I did Roy kind of mention this earlier I gotta ask you just from when you’re refereeing days I was going to say your playing

Days from your reing days uh you mentioned Marty broor earlier obviously excuse me a lot of great goal tenders across your path but do you have any cool interaction stories with the goalies I know from when I play I do play goal that I always kind of have fun

With the refs I’m pretty loose on the ice but I was just curious you know is there anything that pops out of your head from any cool goalie interactions from your career well that it’s uh that’s funny you brought that up da because it’s actually a great story uh

You know he’s in the Hall of Fame now and he played you you know him very well when I mentioned his name he played in South Florida for a long time Roberto Lang Longo oh yeah and uh it was uh 201 uh 19 it was 2018 uh the the 1819

Season and the year the Blues won the cup from going in January from last place to uh to to the Ultimate Prize of winning the Stanley Cup and it was December 19th we’re in uh St Louis I’ve got a home game and borzo shoots the

Puck in from the red line and I’m off in the corner and it and I see it coming it’s waist high I can’t jump I can’t duck because I so I just let it hit me and it hits me in my hip and it goes all

The ways across the goal line and beats wongo on the short side and and I fall back I fall back I hit my head on the boards and I hear the horn go off when the St Louis Blues score the horn goes off and and but I don’t see the puck

Going because I’m trying to you know pick myself back up and and so the liesman comes over and he goes are you okay and I go did that puck just go in the net and he goes and I won’t say what I said to him but I’m like oh is that first career

Assist so it’s my first goal that’s a goal right yeah that’s a goal it’s a goal so anyway it gets taken off the board because you can’t score off an official and and so on so I go in the I go in the dress dressing room to gather

My thoughts for a few minutes they want to put me through concussion protocol and so on I come back on the ice and L in the crease and he goes Timmy are you okay I said yeah Roberto I am but I said you know what for the rest of my life

I’m gonna say I scored on Roberto L Longo he starts so the second part of the story I’ll make it quick for you the best part was two nights later I’m refereeing uh Florida in Chicago and at the time James Rhymer was Longo’s backup and he was skting the start in Chicago

That night so we’re skating around warm up and loango sees me and makes a a beine right over to me and he goes pey he goes they won’t even he goes Rhymer starting tonight he says they won’t even start me when you’re roughing our gamees because we’re afraid you’re going to

Score on me and I laugh it’s like I got the puck back here in my office officials so yeah it was it was great yeah that was that’s one of my all-time favorite goalie stories as soon as you started telling the story I immediately knew what you were talking

About and I said oh my God that’s Tim oh no oh no uh we’re gonna end it on this one 1999 the Stanley Cup final game six Sabers and stars Brent hole was it a go yes or no God technically it wasn’t uh Roy that was Roy that was the stupidest

Stupidest rule they ever brought in they the toe in the crease it was it was asinine they quickly got rid of it because it was you know we’re trying to promote an increase goal scoring in the NHL and here we are taking a taking a goal away because the guy’s big toes in

The crease so technically it shouldn’t have been but I’m a big Brad Hall fan but so I was happy for Holly so uh Tim Peele Snipes and stripes with Jeremy ronic that is a very good podcast you guys should listen to that after you listen to ours and everybody on The Dan

Lto show uh thank you Tim for joining us thank you so much Tim thanks a lot guys have a good Day
