So golfers today we’re going to talk about how to open up the easy way what makes opening up through the golf ball easy let’s get stuck in so most golfers want to open up through the golf ball the best players in the world would have
Their hips 30 to 50° open of contact and the Torso 20 to 25° of contact and the shoulders would look very square or parallel as you would see from the camera because of the position of the arms on the club the average golf most Mortals we would be less than that so my
Hips for example were probably more or less 30° maximum my torso would definitely be more like 10 10 to 15 so most of us you me I John need to open up more through the GOL po now what stops US opening up through the golf po now
There’s kind of two or three main things that stop this happening one is conceptual trying to keep our head down too long most of us think and get told that when we hit a bad shot our head comes up so when we hit gol balls we try and
Stay down and staying down is a huge restrictor in rotation it doesn’t allow us to shift pressure it doesn’t allow us to extend and let that rotation happening so the first thing we’re going to try and do is allow our neck our head to swivel the
Amount of swivel will depend on a few variables such as ey dominancy will affect it a little bit but also we need a bit of trust and confidence I’m quite happy with your head following the golf ball you know just after that contact point but it’s certainly a great thing
To do when you’re practicing to actually let your head come up too early to encourage more rotation so please bear in mind this is a drill try and get your head up before contact I’d encourage this and it might even be better to do this with wedges than it would do with a
A six or 79 but we’ll we want to feel is when we swing down we look up at the Target that we’re trying to hit towards just to help that encourage that rotation you will feel very free through the golf ball compared to keeping that head down most of you will fear contact
When your head comes up hty but just go to the range try it for a few shots try and get your head up as early as you possibly can watch it back on video If you get the opportunity to do so and you’ll see it looks quite flowing and
Quite free so give that a try and don’t be scared Point number two Club face is huge in this if the club face is open on the way down so you have this wrist cup or this face facing too far kind of toe up or toe even to the right on the way
Down you will stall your body and use your hands to try and square that club face up this becomes very subconscious and very instinctive to do because that club face is in a poor position so getting that club face in the better position on the way down will encourage
You then to try and rotate through the golf ball so we are looking for the club to be more tow down in the down swing to encourage you then to turn and almost hold the club off for one of a better word through impact so the rotation
Delays how the hands work which then gives you that straight shot and again subconsciously you’re either going to hook the ball from a closed position or you’re going to look learn how to hit it straight and you’ll either learn by opening the face more which again goes
Back to the same issue we’ve already had or you’re going to learn to get the body working harder so what we want to feel is a lot of pump down swings where we get the club almost facing the ground and then turn and hold it off so pump Down turn and hold it off and that’s going to encourage you just to open up your body through the ball we have to match things up and the word matched up is kind of overused sometimes but we have to if the face is open and I turn
I’m going to leave the face open through contact so we have to get the face stronger here in order to be able to turn through that golf ball to hit straight shots obviously if we don’t want straight shots we can have these things not matched up but just
Encouraging the face stronger will help lots of other things in the golf swing too let’s get stuck into the last reason the last main reason is Swing plane so lots of golfers me included will start the swing down too steeply when we start down steeply what has to happen then is
The rib cage has to shut down to get that go Club back on track or on the correct plane or correct Arc to stop me coming over the top too much if I rotate from this steeper plane position I am then going to wipe across the golf ball quite
Considerably and if the face is open I’ll hit a fade back on target or a slice if I don’t I’m going to hit pull shots they could be quite solid shots cuz it’ll tend to move that low point forward get a nice divot off the golf ball but that’s certainly not what you
Want to do if you’re trying to be the consistent best version of you we want to get that path and plane and the rotation to the ball to be open through contact we want to feel that this plane the club head is behind our hands and then we’re rotating that Ribas through
Impact to get the correct Dynamics and the correct path through impact rather than having to stall or freeze so the more we can feel that club is behind us the better I’ve got a rod here on the ground I’m going to use this as a pure visual I’m
Going to try on the way down try and get my golf club to be in that matched up area if I can and just trying and feel and being very patient from the top to allow that to happen so I’m just going to swing to the
Top I’m try and feel I get it as much from the inside as I can and in practice we can make this even more from the inside and encourage it and we’re always trying to get get back to a kind of matching ball flight IDE from this
Exercise we want the ball to start right start to start to draw back if we can but starting right is the key exercise number two we can leave the rod there for this I want to do a practice swing where I swing back and I swing Along that Rod I’m swinging essentially almost
At 3:00 in the clock face if this was 12:00 in my practice swings I am not going to go anywhere near the golf ball if I had my friend over here I’d be trying to hit this divot straight at friend Johnny over there or I’d be using
The dew off the grass here to Splash that kind of moisture at him in that direction so I want to feel that happens in my practice swing that is training my swing to feel okay this is normal what have I done to create that and then I’m
Going to the golf ball I’m trying to feel can I do that on the swing and it definitely felt a lot shallower but we need to feed what we need so I might need to do that an awful lot just to get it a fraction shallower so these are the three main
Reasons why you’ll struggle to open up through the golf ball and we definitely do want to open up through the golf ball it creates more consistency with the club face control and also the contact lowo control also give these a go to open up more through the golf ball and

Excellent job Alistair in explaining the three main reasons a golfer "opens up through the golf ball!" I have been trying to come into the ball with a simi closed club face, but never thought about this helps one to rotate through the ball. I'll have to pay more attention to this fact. As to being on plane, I tend to swing in to out and in doing so, I try to keep my right elbow in close to my right side. If the elbow leaves my side, then I know I'm in trouble with my shot outcome!
