The European Union’s top court has ruled that UEFA and FIFA broke EU law in blocking the formation of a rival Super League competition back in 2021.

“FIFA and UEFA’s rules requiring prior approval for inter-club football competitions such as the Super League are contrary to EU law,” the ECJ said in a statement, adding that FIFA and UEFA were in breach of EU law on competition and freedom to provide services.

Both football organizations “abused their dominant position” towards a rival league because their rules were not, according to the court, “transparent, objective, non-discriminatory and proportionate”.

New European Super League format explained

On its YouTube channel, the Super League have revealed plans for the format of their proposed competition.

The idea is to have about 64 teams, divided into 3 divisions:

Star division: 16 teams (2 groups of 8)

Gold division: 16 teams (2 groups of 8)

Blue division: 32 teams (4 groups of 8)

All clubs should play at least 14 matches per campaign – seven home and seven away.

It is planned that the Super League will take place in two stages: the group stage and the knockout rounds.

In the first year of the competition, clubs will be selected “based on an index of transparent performance-based criteria”.

The 20 bottom-placed teams in the Blue League will be dropped from the competition entirely and replaced by the best-performing clubs from European domestic leagues.

Two teams will leave the Star Division, and the two best clubs from the Gold Division will enter instead. The same approach is assumed between the Gold and Blue leagues.

We would like to remind you that earlier on the EU Court ruled in favor of the Super League in a court session with UEFA and FIFA, clubs will be able to participate in the tournament without getting sanctioned.

UEFA President Alexander Ceferin has made a statement regarding the Super League:
