Hi I’m Jay Kelly, welcome to my channel Jay Kelly Golf. This YouTube channel is designed to help you play better golf with easy to apply drills for your golf.
I mainly specialise in long game coaching. I look to provide you with some breakdowns and areas to search for in your game.
I understand not one drill will help the same issue so I look to dive deeper into what you can mechanically look for.
I want to help you play better golf so I will be providing topics on all areas of your game such as how to help fix your slice, fix your hook, hit the ball further and striking the golf ball better.

Thanks for watching!
Now some guys will talk about a percentage of Swing so I’m going to swing at 50% speed but I’ve never really gotten great with That hi everyone and welcome back to my channel in today’s video I wanted to do a slightly different one I wanted to talk a little bit around practice and how I practice if I was going to hit balls and how I ask some of my students to practice as well because practice
Does go beyond just technical I think we have to develop quite a few skills certainly in my area the long game area to be able to be quite good at golf you have to develop a good distance control you have to develop predictable curvature you have to be able to change
And develop your ability to launch the ball differently under different conditions and then you’re going to control the spin differently so there are all these things to cover when you’re practicing your long game so all I’m going to do for you is I’m going to
Hit some balls and I’m going to talk you through my processes so let’s get into it so how I practice um so if I was to practice and go down the driving range there’s a few things that I would do I would certainly divide my basket of
Balls up that’s just making numbers easy let’s assume I’ve got 100 Balls I would divide those into technical practice skill related practice and then some sort of deliberate um outcome related tasks as well so I’ll talk you through those so the first thing we’re going to
Talk about is the technical side now I’m sure we’ve all got things in our golf swing that we want to improve I know I have and um in my own game I tend to get my arms stuck across my body as I start to turn into the down swing so for me
I’m always working work on letting my arms fall down a little bit faster so they sink up with the body a little bit better and then turn and rotate through the shot I feel like when I do that I hit much better shots now how would I do
This if it was me trying to make a technical change there’s a few things I do the first way I would make a change is the freezer drill so I would go into positions I would stop check I was in a good place head down and then hit now this isn’t a drill
That I’m particularly bothered about the outcome it’s very difficult to be able to hit balls while stopping it’s purely about understanding where I’m trying to put the club and how I can come down from there for me I don’t quite have a freezer drill like that as such but if I
Went to the top of my swing I would as i’ said to you I’m working on my own uh problems where I need my arms to come down perhaps a little bit faster a little bit earlier so I’d go to the top let that happen a few
Times and then hit one now again I’m not expecting fantastic contact but I am trying solely to develop a feel and I would do that a few times so one more for you I’d go to the top Let Them Fall Down few times and then make a few more swings
Now I would video a lot of shots I have I have a tripod and I’ll put that little tripod in my bag take it to the range and just video to make sure I am working on the right things CU I’ve been down the range a few times made some drills
And then realized they weren’t even the right fills and actually just grabbing a quick video to see where it is actually helped me go okay Jay you need a lot more um sort of deliberate movement there to make this change and that just set me back on the right path the next
Step to the freezer drill is I call it the minute long back swing now some guys will talk about a percent of Swing so I’m going to swing at 50% speed but I’ve never really gotten great with that I never found I was able to gel with that
So I call this one the minute long back swing now it’s not a minute it’s just my perception of what a minute long back swing takes so I would set myself up and it is what it says on the tin I’m going to try and take a minute to make this
Back swing and then I’m going to hit the ball full after that so for me if I’m making some back swing changes here let assume that I’m trying to change my takeaway or I’m trying to change the position at the top I would start to move very
Slowly into the back swing feeling like this is taking forever and I can really feel and see where things are and then hit one in the down swing so I’m able to start building in a little bit of flow to that there’s no stopp there’s no pumps I’m literally
Again if it was a takeaway change for me I’d be doing it very slowly I can see if it goes in there nope that’s not right start again and I can start to make that change can see where the club is arms turning and hit one so again there that
Was interesting because I hit it terribly and again it’s not an outcome related task it’s purely to generate the correct FS then I would start to move up to um let’s call it a third 30 second back swing so now trying to bleed in the fs a
Little bit better we’re trying to do it at Double the pace I just did it which is still obviously extremely slow but a little bit easier to time now from there what I would do is I’d hit a few full swings afterwards I would stand there and I would certainly hit some
Full Swings with the same Sensations and then I I would certainly drop back down like it was a ladder so I hit some full ones I’d go back down all the way to the bottom do some freezers minute 30 seconds full and then all the way back
Through the ladder again and that’s how I would generally structure my technical practice um as I’m doing them slowly um I would video um not every cycle but I’d certainly be wanting to make sure I’m still on the right tracks um as well as just breaking things down and taking it
A little slower to make these changes and you’ll be shocked at how awkward they feel how difficult it is and if you’re using a tripod probably that you’re nowhere near where you think you are so there’s a really good one there once I feel like I’ve got my swing a
Little bit more dialed in I would start to move into my skill related practices so this is where I would play some different games with myself I’d certainly go back to being a kid I would mess around I would try and move the ball as much as I could on different
Shots because at some point I’m going to need them I’d hit probably a few draws a few Fades a few low ones obviously looking out for things I’m not very good at I know I’m not great at hitting that low fade so I might spend a little bit
More time over that but I definitely feel like spend some time on the shots you’re not good at what we do is we all go down the range and we practice things we’re good at because we enjoy them and we don’t want to waste our money on the
Balls for sure but if we’re trying to improve Pro we need to practice the nitty-gritty bits we’re trying to get better at the things we’re not so good at so for me I maybe hit a few shapes so I’d start off I’ll only hit one or two
For you but I’m going to start to hit a draw figuring out how my alignment needs to be how differently I need to move because it is going to be different and you can see here how the ball starts to shape and then I’d go on
To uh the next shot which is going to be a fade for me which is not my comfortable one but again figuring out how I can H now hit that shot more appropriately so for me I’m not very good at hitting a pH so moving the ball up angling my body left all
Things that help me hit that cut shot so I’ve figured out over time which is a skill set as much as anything else on how to do that see if that cuts back I did get it to move back so for me over time I’ve certainly learned learn
How to hit those shots and I would go through and hit some high ones low ones and then bed in a little bit of short game practice too so lastly in my practice into my third portion of the basket I would start to play some games
I’d start to put myself under a little bit of pressure so certainly if you’re on the Range and you’ve got some targets or some lamp posts out there let’s just say driver get your driver out and try and see how many out of 10 you get between those posts each week you can
Start to see progress so for me I’ve got a nice uh nice screen in front of me here I might hit some shots and see out of 10 balls how many was I able to hit inside 15 ft so I might hit a few balls and then keep a little notepad of
How many shots that one didn’t go in obviously um how many shots inside 15 ft or between lamp post I got in and I can start to look at that I’d also start to log where the misses were did I hit more to the right did I hit some more High
Ones did I hit low left ones as a bad shot and I’d start to write those down what was good and bad on that session as well so just a short video there into how I break my practice down there are a million ways to break your practice down
At the moment I’ve broken my practice down into a more technical State because I’m trying to make some of my own changes um if you’re doing speed CH speed training you might want to change up how that looks as well so um why don’t you all just drop me a comment
Below and let me know what you’re working on you might even have some uh fresh games for me to play too so thanks again for watching if you enjoyed the video please give it a thumbs up and if you could subscribe to my channel it would really mean a lot so thanks and
I’ll see you soon

Great video. With the freezers would you start with the club hovering above the ball (2:23) or set down behind it? The latter more representative of hitting a normal shot? If that makes sense
I hope you spend more time on the full swing..forgetting about the ball..and showing how/angle the club takes after it hits the ball. Does the club travel the ball line to some point then comes up at the toe line?? Is the exact same but opposite of the back swing. After watch so many training Youtubes, I have found myself stopping the club swing at the ball…so much practice with freeze downswings.
