Period as we know it and LSU has had a pretty uneventful day which is uh actually kind of awesome to see so um I I want to give you some of my reaction to today because there’s a lot of different ways to evaluate ass signing class but you can’t really
Know until assigning classes their their career ends right you can’t know how successful a class was until their time at LSU is done the example that I give all the time time is the 2020 class the 2020 class was on paper awesome it was the fourth ranked class in the country
And it had five stars like Eric Gilbert and Eli Ricks and kaan booty and how did that all turn out that entire class bolted didn’t pan out whatever it may be the flip side of it is you look at this class you got a guy like Weston
Weaver an offensive tackle from from the state of Texas you flipped from Texas A&M on three has Weston Weaver ranked as the number 20 overall Prospect in America five star number 20 overall ESPN doesn’t even have him in their top 300 I mean you want to talk about the
Disparity so the beauty of a recruit of a signing class is truly in the eye of the beholder and only time will tell us if it works out I today as we sit here am mostly impressed by two things that Brian Kelly and his staff did number
One they had 27 commitments coming into today and all 27 signed today I mean they had this thing wrapped up by lunch not only that but Shay Dixon shared this with us during the contact period so of course you had a dead period you had the the contact period
And then obviously now the signing period but but none of LSU’s 27 commitments zero took a visit all 27 were committed to LSU they were ready to sign and nobody took a visit that suggests to me anyway that this staff identified players it wanted clearly communicated its message its
Vision for those players and only took commitments from guys that were serious about their commitment I think in this day and age of recruiting that’s pretty awesome so I’m glad to see that that was number one number two I think and this is something we have discussed before but I think it’s a
Change it’s an illustration of the change in focus for this staff from Brian poan to Frank Wilson as recruiting coordinator when Brian Kelly got here in 2022 they signed 15 high school players that’s how it always goes in the first year of a coach you just you’re
Get in late you’re generally going to have a skeleton class and they were they signed double digigit transfers it was like 15 high school players 15 transfers last year the 23 class there were 26 players that signed with LSU 26 10 of them were from Louisiana five from Texas four from
Georgia and you had represented 10 different states a year ago 10 different states represented that class A year ago when you looked at how the the class broke down and where all of the prospects came from this year 27 total signes 17 from Lou Louisiana six from
Texas one from Georgia one from Florida one from North Carolina there’s six States total represented all in the Southeast and 17 from Louisiana what Brian poon did was what he used to do at Notre Dame Notre Dame’s class this year by the way and this isn’t a Notre Dame
Take I’m not sitting here trying to give you any type of of take or perspective on Notre Dame it’s not a shot at Notre Dame it’s just an illustration of the difference in Styles and approaches Notre Dame their class this year consists of players from 15 different
States from both coasts and points in between you know this intellectually but you see it Illustrated on days like this LSU signed 27 players 17 of them are from Louisiana that is a start contrast from what Brian poan did to what Frank Wilson is doing couple of other things from this
Class um you have essentially flipped your transfer to high school ratio the the first year as we mentioned you had 15 High School signs and 15 transfers you know last year you had double- digigit transfers as well this year you have 27 High School 26 High
School one jco and right now you got four transfers who are are committed to you so you have flipped that ratio and how you’re building your program also I look at it and say did you add positions of need and this year for LSU I think the answer is
Undeniably yes when you look at the greatest position of Need for LSU coming out of this season undeniably LSU’s biggest weakness we all know it we’ve all said it was in the defensive back field you were awful in the secondary you you have four cornerbacks committed two safeties including the highest rated
Defensive player in this class is a safety from denam Springs into Shawn McBride you check the box of addressing your needs when Brian Kelly came here what did we all say was Brian Kelly’s greatest asset as a recruiter and developer offensive line tight end right so we all talked about look at
What he has done in three years Will Campbell and Emery Jones at two years ago who have both been awesome last year you get five stars of Lance herd you also get DJ Chester and this year I just mentioned you go get Weston Weaver another five-star offensive tackle you continue
To stockpile not just offensive lineman but like Elite level fstar projected first round offensive lineman tight end you absolutely nailed it with Mason Taylor who was a three star you identified the skill set and boom you signed four last year M markway looks like a stud camoran pimpton is going to
Be a really good player we think Jackson mcgan has transferred out but you really like that tight end room and then on top of it this year the number one player in Louisiana is Trey as green who is a 65 250lb freak Show who you’ve got committed at that
Position who’s going to impact your team year one because he is such a mismatch physically on linebackers so you continue to do the thing that Brian Kelly has done exceptionally well as a recruiter throughout his career running back you you get Kaden Durham so you go from two seasons ago
All right the 22 season where Josh Williams a former walk-on is your leading rusher and again it’s no disrespect to Josh Williams but look at what you’ve done since Caleb Jackson looks like an NFL running back Kaden Durham looks like an NFL running back when you start to project in what it’s
Going to be like for 2025 Harlem Barry the number one running back in the country who’s thought to be a heavy lean toward LSU your backfield looks like you’re stockpiling NFL running backs again that’s what it should be at LSU you’re checking these box you got an

Every year and see well those are teams that are contenders every year and that’s true but in what order the margin is so slim Texas A&M two years ago had the greatest class ever how did that work out for did you address positions of need did you develop did you keep
Players that’s all part of the culture you’re building and clearly Brian Kelly is building that and the other thing worth mentioning this recruiting class isn’t finished You’ still got the February signing date Terry bus a five-star is still very much in play for LSU and Dominick McKinley the number one player
In Louisiana by some Services defensive lineman out of Acadiana who is still very much in play as LSU is getting an official visit from Dominick McKinley here in a few weeks and you’re not done adding transfers if you see other players go into the portal at position

For those of who who maybe didn’t follow your high school recruit recruitment as much how that all transpired with um you you mentioned obviously there in when everything happened with Co and everything so how how did that go when the transition went from uh oer on staff to Brian Kelly
Staff uh so I was already in college at ANM while that change happened so I just knew it was going to happen and I didn’t want to be in that mix of a whole entire culture change whenever College itself for me entering College from high school
Was already a big change for me yeah so you went early and roly at uh at Texas A&M no I didn’t I went into the summer got it okay um did when did you first start having uh conversations with uh with LSU and their staff as soon as I
Enter the portal like as soon as I enter the portal i’ always knew that I was going to enter so as soon as I knew I was going to enter the portal and if LSU gave me an opportunity it was no-brainer being a Death Valley being surrounded by
This amazing fan base and being back home with my family I just knew that I was gonna take this opportunity so if LSU had when when when coach Jo was here if LSU had given you that offer that committable offer coming out of high school you you would have been a
Tiger I I did have the offer I just knew that yeah I just knew that Coach O was going to be released got it got it so you so you knew that that staff wasn’t going to be here and so you you left and went to Texas A&M but the opportunity
Now present itself to return um how many schools reached out whenever you hit the portal uh a lot a lot of schools um mainly power five and a lot of SEC schools uh they did reach out but I knew where my heart was yeah was it uh and Jordan
Gilbert is our guest you know sometimes Jordan for guys that go to u high it’s um it’s interesting right because you spend so much you’re literally on LSU’s campus man so some people they want to leave like they want to get away but for some people like that’s home what did
That feel like for you when you were at uhu high like on LSU campus every day uh it was I as a kid I always wanted to play in De Valley so being that close increased my drive to play better increase my drive to put my work in um
Like I said just the timing was off but I’m glad that this uh this has presented itself again yeah man sometimes all in perfect timing right what were your impressions of the LSU staff so who who reached out to you from the LSU staff how did that communication begin uh
Started off with Sherman Wilson uh the the best friend of JD the hman Winer uh and then came coach Cook and then I talked to Brian Kelly and then I talked to uh Coach Frank WS cool what were your impressions of of the staff what stood out to you uh first was
Coach shm and Coach Frank being two individuals that are from the state you automatically Feel Home you feel like you’re at home with people you can trust so they made that decision much much easier yeah man um they have done an pretty incredible job trying to put a
Fence around the state and prioritizing Louisiana Talent let’s talk a little bit about your game itself it’s obvious a place on the field where you’re very comfortable um let me ask first I know you you suffered an injury this year which cost you the bulk of your season
How are you doing physically uh I am way better uh my shoulder and Rehab are all on the right track uh I should be clear for Spring ball yeah speaking on that uh my Sur in my soer injury like didn’t just happen this season it was lingering and it got
Worse and worse so it affected the way I practice and the way you practice is the way you play and that after I put one bad film out there I a continue put that out there so I decided to get the surgery and do you see yourself playing more strong or
Free uh I believe I’m a verstile safety wherever I feel like one of my strongest attributes is that I am I understand the game so wherever they need me I I’m a def I’m a defensive back so wherever they need me I’m a player so I mean you you know you

They will have to answer for as this season goes along and it may be a thing that cost them because at 7 and seven you could very clearly look back at two games that you had no business losing one of them was at Green Bay a game
Where you you dominated but you allowed a punt return for a touchdown you had it shot at a field goal at the end which would have given you the lead and Blake rupy missed it you had no business losing the game to Green Bay 18 to 17 up

Of the uh U uh Publications that that do fact um rate them so you know where are we after three recruiting Cycles we’ve we’ve uh brought in 64 uh freshmen into our program I think you know I’ve said this um since I got here we’re going to build this program
On freshmen um last year you know we had to um bring in a number of transfers because that was necessary for where the program was this year we’ brought in two so you can see the the shift in transition towards developing our players um giving them the opportunity
To grow within our program and then we have to put them on the field we had some young players that have to play this year and there’s some growing pans that go along with that but um I’m committed to um that growth and that that kind of development and I think in
The long run uh it proves to be the way to championships and continuity and consistency within your program um you know I think some of the you know things that are also um important to point out is um you know from a a position breakdown we’ve got great
Balance offense defense uh you know special teams um again uh I I think that you know when we talk about recruiting where is your focus our focus is on the state of Louisiana our focus is on freshman um and our and our focus is on um a well-rounded student athlete that
Recognizes the value of a degree from LSU and wants to play for championships and so that will be reflected uh in this class so with that we’ll open up the questions uh hey coach um you had mentioned those numbers uh 23 of the 27 signes are from Louisiana and Texas
Pretty much East Texas I was just curious obviously those are hotpots for talent but in the portal era and retention your view on recruiting areas like that where do you think guys are more likely to stick it out if they’re close to home parents drive to games
That kind of thing were you correcting me was I correcting you no no no I was actually did I I wasn’t wrong I was adding Texas M that was wrong if anybody is wrong today just just I’m proud I wasn’t correct I was adding the Texas oh you were adding
The 23 of 27 from I’m just curious if if you think that may help with retention yeah I I really do believe that there is um a loyalty and a sense of growing up uh and wanting to play for LSU I I really believe that there’s that
That passion and I think it’s not just LSU I think you know when I was in in the midwest I I was at Cincinnati I mean that that same sense is that I they wanted to be a buckeye right they wanted to play for Ohio State and I think that
That geographically is in you know some the passionate States about football and I think that’s clearly here in the state of Louisiana that that young boys grow up to young men that want to play for LSU so I think that’s real and and so we recognize that and if if they possess
The traits from A football standpoint and from a character standpoint an academic standpoint um darn right we’re going to recruit him absolutely coach you mentioned uh building through freshman but was there as far as interior defensive tackles was there a debate about transfer portal guys there and the fact there are none
Is that a tell that all your guys are coming back next year oo tricky question to the through the tricky one in there um so the junior college player uh Shan Montgomery we really kind of sa satisfied that that piece uh kind of early on before the
Transfer portal even got busy so we used him as kind of the model like if if somebody is of that caliber of a player or better maybe we’d be interested um and and we feel good about reten um and so I think both of those things factored into where we’re at at the
Defensive tackle position uh coach you mentioned that you guys have added uh two guys from the transfer portal does that mean you’re allowed to talk about Jordan and um zavon yeah we’d like we’re trying to keep this as freshman uh and and the one junior college players shown and then
We’ll get to those guys on Friday we’d like to make this their day today okay okay that’s good to know um and uh with the Freshman with a guy like DeShawn McBride um what does he sort of bring to the table with with the secondary and
What sort of was appealing um for you guys about him well outside of um length and athleticism um you know the safety position is is one of of need within our program you just look at the numbers on the depth chart um first um student athlete uh that plays football that has
Graduated from Denham Springs early um so he’s a terrific student High character you know has all the traits that we’re looking for so not only he’s got length um he’s uh really brings the kind of uh safety presence that we’re looking for in terms of being able to
Cover a number two receiver but also a great tackler um great student and um a great young man uh you look at some of the areas where you guys recruited defensively it looks like there’s a lot of positional versatility I’m just curious if that’s a situation where you you got guys like
McBride and uh tylon Singleton Michael Turner just just guys that can come in and maybe we you know start at one position and then maybe you know just depending on need and where their best fit is is that something that you guys targeted as guys that can maybe fill
Multiple spots for you guys I think what what the the charge there was um toughness uh versatility um and and the ability to develop these are all young men that are going to get bigger faster and stronger they have not tapped out in terms of that and so in in
The as we talk about Player Development we we want you know uh the ability to watch these young men uh grow within our program as well so um I I think that that has to be considered as well so if you see somebody that’s you know 205
Pounds you can assume that these guys are going to get bigger faster and stronger um but they have you know obviously some Elite uh traits already and we hope to build on that coach if I could ask about a couple local guys from the same area there try
As green uh football’s still relatively new to him right and uh Joel Rogers yeah uh he said he would mind a few offensive touches too but uh on the safety side of the ball him as well yeah another impressive impressive young man and and Rogers in safety position but again a
Great athlete um and tough I mean he played with you know a shoulder injury that uh obviously got repaired after the season uh um just again High character great student um and and really liked all of the other facets about him and he’s an outstanding football player another neat position for us locally
Tres green um just starting to scratch the surface in terms of what he can do uh as a football player I thought his jump from last year to this year of understanding the game and it coming easy to him was probably um as as big as
Anyone that I’ve seen in one year I generally it takes longer for somebody that’s just played the game uh to pick up the nuances of the game but you could spread him out as a receiver uh from last year to this year and his his awareness his body control uh the things
That he did from last year to this year was was pretty remarkable F over here youall sign four corners and you get Sage Ryan to decide not to come out of the transfer portal so for kind of where do you see Sage moving forward and also now with all of
That how do you feel about the quarterback position moving forward I feel good about it I mean you know certainly um you know jayvant Toano um Ashton stamps Jeremiah Hughes um Sage you know you’ve got four corners there um you know uh J’s coming back from an
Injury um you know you’ve got some depth there you’ve got freshman coming in I think we’re we’re we’re we’re stabilizing a position that was not very stable and and we’ve got Z or Z coming back uh as well who is a starter for us uh there’s depth there there’s
Athleticism that was not the case obviously uh over the last couple of years so what we’re starting to see is a stabilization and depth with within the program that that really was devoid of that and and I think that’s why you didn’t see us jumping into the portal we
We really want to be able to develop these younger players and and and again I I feel confident in our ability to do that and and have them ready to play championship football in the SEC hey coach um so like you mentioned you guys had to start a lot of true
Freshman in the secondary this season with the Freshman that you did sign today is the expectation higher than it than it was or is it about the same where do you stand with from the experience you had this season so I I’ve told them all to have a mindset of
Coming in and competing I’m going to play the best 11 players um whoever they might be um so I think there’s a lot of physical talent in this group um how do you handle the transition you know mentally you have to be prepared uh and sometimes that’s the biggest challenge
Coming in as a freshman are you ready mentally to play CU I think physically most of these guys can compete right away um It’s just sometimes you know some of them take a little bit longer but I’ve challenged them all to have a mindset to come in here and be ready to
Compete immediately look we’ll know early on if you’re standing in the back of the line in the first couple of weeks um we we’ll have a good idea that you’re not ready to compete if you’re up front and you’re pushing guys to get in and
Want to rep and you want to get out there then then let’s see what you’ve got and you know we’ve had that every year I’ve been here right first year you had a guy like you know will Campell uh emry Jones I mean those guys jumped in
Right away and and said look I want to compete right away um you know Caleb Jackson he said listen I’m ready to play right away um so we we’ll have that again this year just are you ready mentally osar couple two uh one um Weston Davis ory Williams some of these
Linemen you sign are basketball players that are lighter guys athletic how good do you feel about kind of the three years of oine recruiting you’ve had now feel really good about it I think we have guys that can bend uh that have light feet that can move their feet
There’s a model that we’re looking for that we’re going to stick with there’s a profile if you will whatever word you want to use um they have to be uh they have to have a really good football IQ um but as you know and you mentioned
A lot of these guys play basketball we want him to be agile have quickness um be able to move up and down the court is is a really good trait for some of these 6’6 6’7 offensive linemen so you can see what we’re trying to do there in terms
Of bringing these guys along um so I I think we’ve stacked uh this offensive line to be uh deep and talented for uh for for years to come how you doing coach good thanks as far as uh signing day and everything goes were there any players that just
Stood out to you or uh were there any players that you were kind of surprised by that were you know wanting to come and play football for LSU um you know there’s there’s so many guys you know when you look at this roster um you know watching Aaron Burell
You know attempt 62 yard field goals I mean and I didn’t even know the rule in high school if you if you kick a field goal and it crosses the end zone it’s a Touchback you know I mean things like that why not kick it every single time
Right I mean things like that when you have a kicker that’s that explosive um that that was kind of fun to watch I mean I guess the there there’s so many guys but the guy that just keeps jumping out at me in terms of what he accomplished was you know Joan Johnson I
Mean he broke every record I mean um and like you you watch him and you go wow he’s going to play this position and then you watch him again you go well maybe he can play this position and then you watch him again you go no he he can
Play this position so uh if any of you guys know what position he he could play just let Mike know and and we’ll take it under advisement because he can play anywhere he’s remarkable as a player and he’s been fun to watch and um you know

Um excuse me um do I want to start let me just start really quickly with some thoughts on um on the the Sharon Lewis thing so very very quick uh catchup Sharon Lewis was an LSU employee for more than 20 years uh she was fired when
Uh Brian Kelly was hired she was fired along with you know 40 other staffers inside of the football Department in LSU Athletics cuz Brian Kelly came in a completely cleaned house from football coaches to administrators to people who clean the building um but Sharon Lewis decided that she had been fired wrongfully and
Um and excuse me she said uh she fought a wrongful termination suit uh saying that she was um targeted because she reported sexual harassment by football staffers and among them were current a former and current LSU assistant coach Frank Wilson who Sharon Lewis alleged exposed himself to
Her he uh so Brian Kelly and Frank Wilson both took the stand in court on Tuesday in Baton Rouge uh Brian Kelly said that um her firing was not retaliation but it was a staffing change of 40 40 positions that were turned over by the way why would ran Kelly be
Retaliating against Sharon Lewis for something that allegedly happened in 2013 when he was still the coach at Notre Dame right um Frank Wilson under oath denied Lewis’s allegations that he exposed himself at her in her office he also denied two similar allegations again under oath so uh today a jury dismissed Sharon L’s
Lawsuit I would like to give um credit where credits do and sometimes say this because you know one of the great things about doing radio in the digital era is everything is record there’s a record of everything and Sharon Lewis’s initial lawsuit was filed in April of
2021 April of 2021 on that day Attorney John McLendon came on this show and he kind of gave us an idea of a timeline like how long do you think something like this might expect here’s what John McClendon said on this show in April of 2021 three years would be my guest it’s

For monetary damages they just ask for damages so I’m not sure why she picked a number and why she picked $50 million I’ll tell you what I wouldn’t pay any attention to that number anyway it doesn’t mean anything okay she has to prove Dam um her attorney Larry English said
They will reassess their options soon quote we think we put our we think we put on our case but we’re in a system where the jury makes the decision we will go home and get some sleep and look at our legal options and what we’re going to do moving forward um John
McLendon in a very polite and professional way said uh what a dummy like they’re hey hey attorney English you don’t ask for damages a set number in federal court you ask for J damages and then a jury Awards damages like I I’m laughing but on on one hand because it’s it’s fundamentally

She’s getting absolutely nothing uh remember she filed a RICO uh claim earlier for racketeering she basically was was alleging organized crime a judge very quickly dismissed that and threw that out because it was absurd and this entire thing was absurd and she has an attorney who I’m sure is a nice man but

Um the most important thing as it pertains to football is Frank Wilson’s job is safe if if this had come back and Frank Wilson had been found to have a jury had had favored in side in favor of Sharon Lewis and LSU was facing a massive settlement and you had and Brian Kelly

Tiebreaker you have got to win this game to keep Pace in your Division and in the event that you lose to Tampa a win over the Rams Who currently have the last wild card spot in the NFC could prove to be beneficial for New Orleans because obvious obvously
You could go to a head-to-head tiebreaker for that last wild card spot it’s wild to think that the Saints could still be in the Wild Card conversation but that’s why this is so significant how it plays out and when you look at Tampa Tampa has Jacksonville this week
At home so both the Saints and Tampa have their toughest remaining game this week the Saints are at the Rams and Jacksonville or excuse me and and Tampa’s at home against Jacksonville next week of course the Saints and the Bucks play in Tampa and then Tampa gets Carolina on the road but
In week 18 while the Saints host the Falcons I would assume both teams would win in week 18 they’re going to play head-to-head in week 17 and we’ll see how it goes this week but the Saints could build themselves a lead in the division this week if they go on the
Road and win on Thursday Night Football and if not then you then you just literally have to then it becomes a must-win the final two weeks you’ve got to beat Tampa and Atlanta if you don’t win this game on Thursday but you know Dennis Allen was asked about this team
