Hawk Tawk Seattle Seahawks show created and hosted by Dave DesRochers, co hosts Tre Madden and Walter Thurmond honoring the 12 #seahawks #12th man #seattle #nfl a Sideline Sports Production.

[Applause] Hey welcome to Hawk talk this is Dave D roer I’m always the loud guy the old guy joined every week by Walter Thurman legion of boom Superbowl champ uh Trey can’t make it tonight and uh and so this week we’re we’re we’re just coming all

On so um coach Arie so he was a coach while I was there he’s going to call me Leo we’ll we’ll explain that in a moment um and uh and representing the 12 so this is a great story so Jason uh I I met Jason when I don’t know

How old you were brother you were like five or six I I I was dating his sister in high school and and we would send Jason to the liquor store hey you gotta go um and uh it it ends up um ends up he ends up becoming a a police

Officer for glendor PD just retired and and I didn’t know but a huge Seahawks fan huge you dub fan just went up there for for the uh the Apple Bowl it was Apple Bowl right apple cup yeah apple cup yeah same thing bowl cup uh you know

Whatever the Pack 12 stuff is and so and Jason’s been hanging out with us at a Tavern bar so I thought you know hey come on hang out with us he just had knee replacement so he’s just sitting there not doing nothing um anyhow so now

Coach you said you just shared with us you didn’t see the game but man that was the game of the year for us we looked good that that was that was a big game that was that was a must have game uh I mean especially look facing down you

Know being you know 0 and six in this last stretch play of hopes in the balance there and the guys came out and made plays you know and it came down to defense defense made the plays they need to make the plays you know you gotta

Love some love give us give us give us a defensive breakdown Walt you know I mean you know we had a little trouble stopping the run I mean they were you know they ran over you know 140 yards on us with rushing there that’s we’re still trying to find our

Balance on that run game weather spoon you know that the the absence of him it’s it’s felt and it’s affected he’s such a great player you know that shows his ability when he is there how how much he contributes to the team whether it’s in run run support especially on

The on the back in the coverage um seeing jayen love come in and step up like he has you know through the course of this season when he’s when his number is called he just comes up there and makes plays and he you know he’s able to

Close the game out and and we won a turnover battle uh out there yesterday so we got Williams in the middle who’s who’s he’s he’s as advertised man he’s he’s a president since every game we’ve got two of the best linebackers I mean we a great linebacking core why are we

Having a hard time against the run I think it’s just attention and detail and studying um I I’m not you know could be a little bit of scheme but guys got to go out there and and do their part um yeah I think it just comes back down to studying and just being

Able to fit up some of those runs uh when you are in a in a scheme where you’re kind of playing a two Gap at the defensive line position you know you’re you’re it’s really reactionary for linebackers because you’re basing all the D line having to go one way and

You’re filling the Gap the other way as opposed to you know when we had some of those great defenses there playing four3 guys were just hitting their respective gaps and you know you know you just got to get in your Gap don’t try to jump around to someone else’s Gap you just

Kind of do your job there so it puts a little bit more onus you have to really be in sync in that capacity when you you’re playing like a two Gap scheme on defensive line there and so I think that kind of contributes to some of the some

Of the play action know the play calling and how we’re just able to react to it yeah so Jason when you’re watching the game what what is what is your area of focus I mean you just kind of watch everything or is there an area that that

You tend to focus on at all or no we we watch it as a family we’re that family on the street that has the flags up they know to leave me alone on the weekends you know we we we fix our schedules up for Husky games and Seahawk games and

But uh last night um it was a little bit different we always have our pregame rituals and we actually have a little dood dillos maros statue that we light we call him lhal con we brought him to The Tavern Bowl Y and you know we we Jersey up and all that yesterday we

Didn’t um uh we went dark in honor of our dog that we just had to put down two nights ago his name is Sherman Nam after Richard Sherman so in honor of him we did that so we were all kind of like in a blah mood last night we’re just kind

Of like let’s just watch it you know we’re probably going to get beat just we had that really so the whole time we’re watching it and I’m going getting down on lock I’m getting down down on you know the defense and I’m thinking oh God

Not again and I’m like gez okay we got to get I know I get that Doom and Gloom we got to get rid of Pete we gotta get rid of this we gotta get you know get rid of all these people and then sure enough you know take take years off from

The end of my life they come back at the very end and they they do it again and I tell you when I die whatever year you take five years off and that’s you know I would have died five years later because of the CC and we got the Run game going you

Know yeah K Walker glad see that yeah Ken Walker was out there rolling I mean when you give that guy his touches whether it’s you know in the pass or especially in the run you know I think that’s when the offense and team is very most successful when he’s being

Productive out there and you’re able You’ seen how he impacted the game yesterday and then Drew lock you know he didn’t turn the ball over you know he made some you know made some solid throws especially there in the stretch I mean that’s what you asked for him to

Make go plays you know decaf was quiet the whole game and you know he he he waited till his number was called when when it matter most and he made those plays yep big catch and then the kid you know I mean that that I mean it was it

Was a half an inch further and there’s no you know there’s no touchdown but that was a heck of a catch the ball was good but the catch was better I mean it was fingertips like we see how many how many times were we watching uh you know

Other games and then and those receivers are dropping that ball um he just continues to impress Weatherspoon continues to impress I I I’ve got to love I tell you lock just looks alive in the pocket uh you know keep in mind you maybe he might struggle from time to

Time but he’s been in the backup capacity all season long yeah but he’s alive in the pocket and he’s making plays and and it’s fun it’s fun to see I um and and gosh K9 he just keeps churning I I there’s been certain times like he’s like sideways and his legs are

Still going like North and South it’s crazy to watch him run he’s just constant movement and uh I I just I I love I’m already looking forward to next season you know if we can solidify that quarterback position we’ve got so many key players great players that uh I think that we’re

Going to be I think we’re going to be in really good shape uh next season we gotta get the we gotta get the offensive line buckled down yeah it’s gota be a little more consistent there yeah it’s been the recurring team for quite some time yeah I like our bookends though I

Do like our tackles yeah so so coach I know you missed this game but have you have you have you been watching any of the any of the games this season you know uh we I live in Hawaii Honolulu so like regular TV station they’re all limited the Seahawks they haven’t been showing

It too much so I don’t really watch it I probably if you ask me I probably knew Eagles football team better than Seahawks uh right now just because of the games they playing right because you know I I don’t watch football game even even college games it TV’s on all the

Time but I don’t sit front of TV and I watch every single play because the way I watch I watch look at the screen and I’m gonna I’m a defensive guy so I’m gonna watch how the offense line up how the defense line up and the both snaps

I’m GNA read it’s a man of Zone coverage right and then after the play first down 10 then second and seven okay what the other guys going to do you know what’s offense going to do so that’s how I watch football games so so I don’t have

To watch whole thing because nobody pay me to watch so I sure want seaw to win but outcome is not important to me because even though I was working for Seahawks uh outcome is number two sure we wanted to win but if you lose you

Know what can we do then we just watch the film that was a that was a deal watch film and then go over and then correct ourselves and move on to next week and you guys know uh if the game is over game is over right yeah yeah yeah

We can’t we can’t change it so we’re GNA look forward to the next week so that’s how I watch football games everybody ask me stuff but you know people now like uh Bing on stuff gaming on stuff more popular about that but uh so I think those

People know the team itself done I do because I only watch schemes you know you know you don’t watch the Players yeah I I need okay running back I got 32 even name matter to me like a number is more important than uh the names on the

Back of the iy it’s nice but yeah I watch football games so uh so you’re damaged well you’re you’re you’re damaged because of the position that you that you held and the job that you had for those years you know and we had John Kasich on uh

Earlier uh and you know John brought uh the perspective of being a head trainer at the NFL level you know and all that goes in behind the scenes there and and much like you you couldn’t get too caught up into you know how what a player statistics were or all those kind

Of things it was more all right how we going to get this cat back on the field you know get amended and that’s and that’s all we’re concerned about and you know they certainly know who the players are but it’s a whole different perspective on on the game itself right

And and there and there is no clock on a wall you know I mean when you’re when you’re a head trainer uh man I those cats were there at 5:00 am till till 8:00 pm yeah U doing whatever it took to get the guys back on the field and I and

I probably could be wrong with those times but I I do know the training room was always open yeah my my main responsibility with the Seahawks was a breaking down the film which is like uh previous games like three to four games opponent films and then I uh break it

Down I name the formation every play and then name the personal and then play run pass whatever that was my main job and they all go into the computer and whatever the coach wanted information that we pull pull them out from the computer so they can’t see the tendency or you

Know what other teams are doing that was my main thing so I took that as uh my responsibility pretty seriously and then uh I watched broke down about four games every every week uh and then you know I’m not bragging about it but I you know uh say

Four games of four four games a month I made like two mistake every month but when I saw that somebody comes up and say something or usually they don’t say anything so I and find out and I get so mad myself until uh the other coaches and

Stuff like that so that was that was my main job but Leo there I wasn’t really coaching yet though Dave Craig still introduced me as a ball boy and I was a b boy that was my summer job that’s when we that’s how I got started

So like my summer job over there b boy running around the training camp yeah so uh Dave I keep touch with da and I see him face to face and then uh we run into somebody we I don’t know and he introduced me as a ball boy too still so

Uh hey what hey on a side note afterwards we’ll have to exchange well we already have each other’s numbers but I’d love to get in touch with Dave and maybe have him on the show um and so so now you just called me Leo yeah um and

And what a lot of people don’t realize my last name although spelled nothing like Leo de roer yeah but the coaches of San Diego State called me Leo and it was usually the Elder Statesman the little bit older coaches who knew what Leo de

Roia was and and as soon as the word Leo came out you know as ball players we’re all nicknamed guys you know everyone gets a nickname and that’s what’s sticks and so it was funny uh I I hadn’t talked to you for whatever 30 some years AR and

I and the first thing you said he go hey Leo go awesome and anarie my fiance goes Leo what does that mean you know how does how do you get to Leo and I said Leo de roer and she still didn’t know what that meant because I mean that’s an old

Baseball thing yeah yeah so you know you you brought up some interesting points which you know I love people you know that bring the history of the game game in yeah um you know and and you know Walt and I appreciate his patience I’m bringing all these cats in from the 80s

Um but I mean that’s what I played and you’re talking about breaking down film and was that I know it wasn’t 8 millimeter wasn’t that bad but was it betamax or or how were you doing it and and when you say a computer people don’t realize this man

In the 80s there were computers but it was a c prompt you know you know AOL thing getting online and and and and I know you’re still helping in coach I think uh with our least you did with some of the younger kids and now everything is so electronic and they

Just tag it you know everything’s tagged and everything just goes but you did all this manually right right I would love to get give a little bit more insight of the process how much time you spent doing that and how long it took you to break down one game whereas guys are

Just doing it now like breaking down and and and tenden pull up on a sheet within within minutes yeah uh my first year training camp was uh uh last year of Seahawks at training camp at chinii for day one 1985 that was the last year the Seahawks

Had a training camp with Chi okay oh I’m got to miss that I heard it was horrible that year was still using the old film thing so MIM eight uh yeah you know the uh the film yeah the projector yeah yeah 1985 was that I believe 1986 that’s the first

Year the Sony helped NFL to put the data Max I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure that sounds about right so um so 86 88 885 were my first year uh that Pro that two month you know we had the super long training come back then we had four

Preseason game and the month before that it was uh you know practice two a day kind of stuff you know in the heat we did get a water breaks I’m not that old like a lot of oldtimers said yeah we never got water break and stuff but yeah so we did Chuck

Gave us a water break and all that but so I was doing uh B boy for a few years I was in college and then 88 I graduated college and then I went up to Seattle I didn’t have a food time job but I worked for Seahawks and like a games I had

Another job and I went to the game and hang around as much as I can and then Tom Flores came in as a general manager he hired me as a uh kind of run errands kind of stuff so like you know picking up the players at the uh airport and

Stuff like that but my job uh there’s a change in the uh coaching personnels so the person who was breaking down had kind of got another responsibility so somebody had to take over the job and then I there’s another coach and then I was there being

Learning when I we are learning how to do it and I picked up faster than the other people so they kind of gave me the full-time job to do that but what uh what Theo was talking about is uh each game the beta Max was 30 minutes

Tape okay uh regular VHS like you go you can’t tape for three hours but beta was 30 minutes tap so one game offensively defensively different tapes but they had to fit it in the 30 minutes so the video people had you know chop it down and

Make sure they go in there but that 30 minutes tape took me about two and a half to three hours to break down for me yeah like after practice we watch the film practice film and then everybody breaks to their own job so I stay in the

Room meeting room and I broke down took about three and three hours probably the most or less yeah so that’s how much took and then uh I don’t know I’m faster or not but I don’t know all the computers uh came up and pull easier to

Do things nowadays but back then I wrote everything down in a sheet we had the huge uh paper with down on distance personal where the B was and all that and about maybe like 20 different things in one play you had to write it down so

You know you go back and forth back and forth but when I started a story about that Tom Catlin was the defensive coordinator George Dyer Jo Vette and then uh Paul Moyer and then uh those guys are on the defensive team and then when I started first

Year uh everybody watching film and Tom catling was you know in charge of the film moving back and forth back and forth I’m looking down what he says or anybody else says I’m writing down so I’m riding down I want to watch too but I’m riding down I can’t really watch it

The same time so when they get mad at me and they just tell me just write the things down they won’t let me watch the play so that’s how I started but you know that paid paid off I used to Tom Cat passed away but when I argued with

Tom Cat I told him you know what you are arguing with yourself because I everything I Learned was from I argue with you you are arguing to yourself you know he sometime he gets mad and then says oh just write whatever you want because you got the one with a

Pencil and you know what it’s funny when you you bring up a name Tom Catlin you know those Chuck Knox and Tom Catlin were two of the same same she they they’re just just I don’t know how to say this nice they’re just the old men I mean they just you

Know they just put up with anything right yeah very direct yeah you and and you bring up you bring up our camps yeah we were we were lucky to get water you know and the guys today they don’t know nothing about and and you might not remember this but I do I remember

Walking on the field for a third time you know and it’s just walkthroughs but we’re on the field a third time after even meetings you know I mean it was crazy the camps and I’m glad we didn’t do chaining and I heard they went back to

Cheney a little bit and for those of you Jason do you know J Cheney you know where that is I I’ve heard of it I don’t know I don’t know exactly where it’s at but I’ve heard did you hear about the Cheney days yeah Eastern Washington Eastern Washington hot nothing to do

Nothing you know yeah we were up in Kirkland at some I don’t know some junior college is where stuff was and I’m thinking this is a pro team our weight room was Tiny you know and we had Joe vit was our strength coach um yeah it wasn’t it wasn’t a

Friendly you know atmosphere like going up there and seeing how peed is with the guys now um you know and and and having fun with them you know we we were always looking over our shoulder to see if we were G to get hit or get yelled at you know it was

Kind of stressful yeah I I want to to to piggyback on arie’s comment here that that these guys are unsung heroes within the organization though you know they’re doing you know putting in countless hours of work to be able to get as much information as possible not just to the

Coaching staff but also to the players that’s what that’s that’s what you see the the separation of some players from others on I guess how fluid they are during the games and how like they’re just effortless because they’ve doing so much they’re taking resources that what

AR and his team are doing being able to bundle up the down and distance because all these different little tibits are giving you um a slight advantage of anticipation of what to expect on the upcoming play or the the next play based off of you know how many receivers are

Out there how many tight ends are out there and now you’re able to um expect you know what type of what type of run it would be or if it’s going to be a Pass based off of those down and distance so those different type of indicators are so crucial for uh you

Know as players to be just be on the same page and this is something that you you mentioned earlier Dave about you know what’s it with our defense and why we’re struggling with you know the the Run game there you know the down the distance will let you know and then the

Formation because each team has a set plays that they’ve run within the last four game breakdown that’s what they do the four game breakdown there so you start to see some of these repetitive plays that come up week in and week out out excluding the the specialty plays or

The new plays to try to get you caught off guard and stuff like that but there is some repetition from the offensive coordinator or even defensive coordinator of plays that they’re going to call given the a particular type of down and distance and so yeah just you

Know the I can only imagine you know the the process you know from 80s to 90s to where the technology is here to where now it’s very automated you can just scroll you can probably just click 11 personnel which is one tight end and three receivers out there and you can

Start to see uh you know the formation and plays base off of that just from you know the the work that you know the guys in the back are doing doing those breakdowns for the team well that’s why you know like Ary sharing he was doing it on paper yeah

You know writing it out you know now to go through the yeah now now you just tag it right and it goes to a category and so you you know you log onto the computer and you you know do 11 and all a sudden there’s you know 15 plays you

Know it’s like boom boom boom boom boom and it’s just it’s all done automatically and and so I was a part of that that era as well uh coach you know I uh I remember at San Diego State we’re watching film on an 8 millimeter and the

Dog on fil would you know break you know and the coach was having to mend it with tape and then we’re going back and we’re watching it and it was really hard to go forwards and backwards if you did it enough times the know tape would snap um

It would it would vibrate you know it you really couldn’t get a feel for it I remember getting that brand new betax you know and then the coaches didn’t know how to work the dang things so you know fil took even longer because you know they’re getting lost and they

Couldn’t but it was really great once you figured it out but to the point of how important uh a role like coach Ary was and and doing that work is that that film work uh you know every defensive lineman I win against was going to have a different technique you know Jacob

Green he’ loved to hit with his hands so and he was he was one of the first guys that’s what they teach D liman now so I would bait him I would bait him with my off hand and I know he’d go to swipe at it because that’s what he did and as

Soon as he did I’d pull it away and then I and then I block with my with my inside hand and it would just irritate the out of him I remember one time he pulled me goes rookie he goes this is my drill I’m like bro you’re an all pro man

They figure it out I’m trying to make a team you know I believe me you don’t need any help you know you’re on the freaking circle of Honor you know he wasn’t at the time but you know you’re pretty dog on good man I but I I gotta

Try and make a team here so but watching that film and watching the Tendencies is is so important and you could tell like you’re saying Walter uh the guys that do it and and the guys that don’t you know and being prepared another point you brought

Up when we had KJ on a couple weeks ago is that communication you know and we see those good defenses man there’s hand signals going on there’s all kinds of communication going on and and and then you see them you know Shore things up but I think there’s a there’s a lot of

Different Dynamics with ours you know different you know guys that kind of just threw together this year that we’re not really seeing that communication yeah I mean you anytime you go to a new team a new organization and having to learn a Playbook you know I mean there

Is a process there is a learning curve you’re trying to get you get very familiar with that you with that offense or that defensive scheme that you’re learning to uh learning to implement and practice there so you may not be as confident uh to be able to communicate

Because you’re trying to work through your processes and protocols and then also figuring out okay the down and distance to where is just being able to be comfortable in that defensive scheme and you mean you look at somebody like like Bobby and why he’s you know averaging 120 tackles a year for the

Past 12 something years you know future Hall of Famer there you know yeah that’s you know there’s a level of awareness and study that goes along with that to be put in position to be able to make those plays that gets that can get overlooked at because he does it so you

Know habitually to where you know he’s like oh yeah he he we expect him to do that well we expect him do it because he’s he’s trained and prepared himself and he’s a he’s a very intellectual player uh in that in that capacity to be

Able to go get the job done and make those plays but not everyone can do that not everyone uh taking their level of game to to the the studying that capacity and I think that’s what made those you those like you said the 2000 you know early 2010 Seahawks team so

Great because you had those guys that were you know very hungry had chips on their shoulder uh who who were smart players they wanted to wanted to learn and wanted to prepare themselves so they can go make plays and they became infectious in that yeah you know what uh

I don’t know KJ but I I figur the way he plays I’m pretty sure he’s pretty smart guy right y yeah okay and then being smart it helps and then dedication is very important to be successful you know uh like we had Eugene Robinson yeah he

Was one of the smartest guy I ever met he was a free safety uh John Harris 1985 my first John Harris was there I heard he went to practice with the uh play not the play but scattering report so the offense is on he’s on the sideline he’s

Looking at the scattering report on the game plan and stuff he’s Ling looking at the sideline you know he was a smart guy too then Eugene took over John got traded to the Minnesota Eugene took over the starting job as a free safety us was

One of the smartest guy and then I have to be careful what I tell him because if I give him too much information then uh I don’t you know he won’t be able to play football you know thinking too much instead acting so I I gave him a few extra information but you

Know I try not to give him too much information because uh I I I want him to play football you know but other thing is uh the watching the film uh that’s one of the important thing to be successful too yeah so I’ll tell you AR you bring

Up something that a lot of a lot of people don’t realize you know the the negative connotation that football players are dumb um you know it it it it may be true in some instances but that’s with every walk or any career I mean J Jason I’m sure you worked with with some

Guys that weren’t real bright either but I think but but actually to make an NFL team um you know for an offensive line our Playbook was like this this big you know 24 power for an offensive lineman I’ve got to block that eight different ways depending on the front and those

Guys move you know for a running back at 24 Powers two back four hole doesn’t matter what the front is right and for a quarterback he’s going to reverse pivot hand the ball to the two back going through the Four Hole doesn’t matter what the front is so their playbooks

Were a lot thinner and I will tell you there were some pretty good athletes um that didn’t make the team because they couldn’t learn the Playbook right and I remember Chuck uh coach Knox get put me into the starting lineup you know my rookie year I was W I was working in at

Tackle uh playing next to Brian Mard you know had been there for for a number of years and and I made a I made a line call and he called it off I made the line call and and he stood up and he said hey rookie it’s

B and then um and then uh uh a coach oh shoot um uh um our online coach um Ken Stevenson Ken yeah I just reached out to him I’m hoping he comes on the show too so Kent goes bivo get in your stance the rookie right you know and and they call him

Bivo because he had a big head he went to Texas but anyway be getting your stance the rookies right and that’s how I made the team by learning that Playbook and and you have to have some form of intelligence because I’ll tell you man there’s a lot of different calls going

On that people just have no idea about and then it’s got to be you’ve got to know it so well it’s got to be instinctual because those defensive guys move you know they can move anytime they want we can’t you know and and and sometimes they move on the snap and

You’ve got to know exactly what you’re doing in every instance and it’s a it’s a a matter of alignment all those different things that Walter’s been talking on the defensive side same thing on the offensive side uh being able to pick those things up right so Jason I

Got I got to ask you so now this is where my old and concussive mind comes in I forget if I introduced you as being um my my high school girlfriend’s little brother I don’t know if we did that during this or if we did it during the

Introductions before the show you did I’ve known you since you you know you were knee high so uh when did you become a Seahawks fan it’s really cool listening to Arie because I’ve been pretty much been a Seahawks fan since their Inception I was really young was

You know I was born in 72 they they came in 76 but just from birth I have family up in up in the Seattle area and you know I’m I’m I’m you know the the players that I remember and I’m aging myself but I’m I’m you know I’m thinking

Of Kenny Easley and I’m thinking of Jim Zorn and Joe Nash Joe Nash is one of my favorite players at nose tackle and that’s one had legitimate nose tackles back in the day you know we had the three four with the two ends and the nose guard in the middle and then the

All the four linebackers and um so yeah it’s my mother’s side of the family have a bunch of people up in the Bremerton area and Silverdale area and so I’ve just always had a connection to the Seahawks so you mentioned Joe Nash AR you remember Joe of course and Joe

Had this knack for blocking field goals he was undersized undersized small guy um and I’ve actually I’ve just reached out to him recently too don’t forget to mention he’s slow huh he’s slow white guy he’s slow small but here’s here’s one thing about Joe Nash because I did spend some time

Playing guard he was so great with his hands and it didn’t matter what you did with him he’d grab you by the wrist and he had a grip uh and once he had that you couldn’t break it and he would he would just control you and then he get

Himself skinny and and make plays he was amazing because it wasn’t like once in a while he was just so good with his hands and he’d focus on yours and he’d get your wrist and I I still remember to this day when I think of him is that

Playing against him that it was you couldn’t do anything about it it was it was just it was aming amazing to watch him play for the number of years that he did that and and not being like I said a really big guy and slow and uh but man but what an

Impactful guy in in that position because the guys today that are there are all over 300 pounds you know they’re all just huge human beings um so it’s uh like I said it was a different era but um but that’s a neat name that you that

You brought up that yeah one thing about John Ash colet Kennedy once said Joe is so slow but he to the quarterback cot is a quicker than anything else but he’s struggling to get to the quarterback Jo is like you know get to quarterback CES they don’t know why Joe gets the

Quarterback but there we go again Joe is one of the smart guy too that’s how he got it yeah and Joe Boogie Jeff Bryant and Jacob green uh those three they call it like like uh die hard you know Never Dies but those three is like uh they

Have so many p and the field goal blocks it have to be it had to be the NFL record I don’t know how many they block but I Vivid memories of the Seahawks being like the best special teams like they they talked about I remember how coell in Monday Night Football talking

About how how amazing the Seahawks were in those in those 80s teams those those late 80s early 90s where they were blocking everything right was crazy and that was coach coach Rusty Tillman was a big part of that I mean we we spent a lot of times on special teams and Walter

Has brought this up a lot of times is the is the three facets of the game we talk about offense we talk about defense but it’s so often that special teams make that little whether it be a momentum change or a big play or could

Put you in a hole right if it’s you know if you’re giving up blocked blocked punts and then and we’ve been seeing this this year uh a great kid that I got to meet last Super Bowl miles kbu uh a big uh special teams guy up Pittsburgh

With the Steelers and he just makes plays I don’t he blocked a couple of punts this year and he’s uh he’s done some other fantastic things but a special teams player um and as I’m saying this I’m remembering and you’ll probably remember him Arie Rufus Porter made a big difference he made he

Was a he was a free agent undersized outside line backer but men on special teams that kid was fast and he’d hit you and he became a a a favorite of Coach knocks and made the team and then and then became an allpro as a defensive end

He was so small that as big guys we couldn’t block him you he one of those when Rufus started I things changed since then but I think rof was one of the first guy to make it proo as a special team player yeah back then I I

Don’t think you know way back I don’t think they had special team player as a pro bowl player and then Fred young was before that I think if anybody remember yeah F was unbelievable one game I was in the sideline running back coming up the sideline and he came out from middle of

Nowhere he whacked this guy so hard I was in pain flat out he was hard guy the Fred young I think a lot of you know uh just you probably remember Fred but yeah he was one of the hard hitting guy like Kenny was hard hitting guy too easily yeah so

Yeah Rufus was unbelievable going back to Rufus yeah he was so quick I think he had like people call him like a Kit Kat or something you know like a cat so quick and then he is I I believe he is the one of the reason like a pun team

And stuff you couldn’t you couldn’t jerk yourself to make him other team make offside off yeah I think they stopped doing that because rofus if I’m right yeah no he was he was so fast you know so me and one of our one of our 12

Down here uh a marine great guy brought up a name Blair Bush um and Blair’s another great name a Seahawk history and another guy undersized you know um I I don’t know I he must been like 61 one of the first centers you know like a a

Smaller but he just just technique um and I remember Brian Bosworth wrote a book um in I think it was 87 because my rookie year um when it looked like I was going to make the team the offensive line would invite me to the pizza uh and

Of course my job was to get the beer um but Brian was there buying the beer i’ he’d PID for it and I’d go get it because he was making amends for his book and in his book he called the Seattle Seahawks offensive line uh uh

Like worse than UD dubs like UD Dub’s offensive line I think was B bigger than ours and he he called our our guys out so he was making amends to to the guys because guys like Blair and and bivo they weren’t real big Mike Wilson you

Know I mean he was a 14year guy but he wasn’t you know wasn’t that big and so uh it was it was weird how we were able to have so much success when we start going up against guys we were went to Houston and you know they had Dean

Stein cooler and and these guys that were just freaking just just huge just yolked you know and and our guys were just older and just had great technique um and I think that’s the way you know Chuck liked his team he loved his veterans yeah yeah he he was traded through the

Seahawks and he when he came he was older than any body else yeah he was he was bald and you know and and he he you know it was really kind of neat for me because those older guys took me under their wing you know and and they weren’t

Real threatened because they were all towards the end of their career anyways and they fig what the heck you know let let the kid have a chance but but Blair is still a great guy I saw him at a game um you know uh they’re just they’re just they’re just good

Dudes is a udab guy he went to udab yeah and so so Jason um coming up here uh we’re gonna we’re going to do a drawing oh we’re almost almost time so um I uh I have a 12thman jersey signed by a bunch of the guys we’re talking about Edwin Bailey Malcolm

Smith or Super Bowl MVP Walter signed it I I haven’t signed it I want it to be worth something but maybe signature on the bottom or some um uh who else Norm Johnson ah let’s see I gota see I always forget who’s on this thing Max strong

And uh a handful of other guys Randall Morris Edwin Bailey um Dwayne Harper uh so Jason uh came to uh the um Tavern Bowl where we where we uh where we uh do some watch parties and I know you won a prize there and my wife won

Huh my wife won a gift card okay and then and you went up to the Seahawks game right yeah did you win you won a locket helmet at one of the parties there yeah signed the Tyler locket mini helmet okay so so everywhere he goes he

Wins and so we’re doing we’re gonna do this raffle and I just happened to look right before we went on and he snuck in and he made a donation to my nonprofit so he’s got tickets he’s got tickets he’s in he made it in under the

Deadline um you know people are going to say fix if I win man I didn’t even I know so if I hesitate because am Mar’s going to help me with this she always help me she she’s my um uh my official helper for all the Raffles and stuff um

If I hesitate it might be your name I might have to pull go ahead I Didn’t Do It For The Jersey man honestly I know I I appreciate you I appreciate you so hey even though the Jersey would be nice yeah it it will it’s really cool and

It’s not a cheap Jersey it’s like a $200 Jersey so it’s it’s a good one um you know we don’t do anything halfway around here um guys coming up we got the Titans let’s talk about that real quick we’ll do the drawing and then we’ll we’ll let

Everybody go uh Walter what do you think about this uh you know we we we know we have to win out to have a chance but we’re we’re we’re behind the ball because we got two losses to the Rams who are playing great football yeah and of course the Niners have already locked

And and well they should because they just I mean that’s just that’s an all I mean I don’t know how many of those cats are going to be on the um we we got to win out I mean to give us give ourselves a chance we got to win

Out the the Rams played the ners at the end of the year so you know you know chances are you know they may walk away with the loss there um Minnesota think is also sitting in that 7 seven range so I mean there’s some opportunity for them

To lose some games so Ian we our chances are there I mean we I think we have to win out uh the Titans aren’t going to be a rollover you know the record doesn’t suggest that but they’ve been playing some very tough football they lost some

Close games um it’s going to come back down we got to stop the run I mean each week is having to stop the run especially with that third running game what Rabel was doing out there you know he’s great coach uh you know very defensive minded so they’re gonna be

It’s gonna be a tough gritty game uh it’s going to be interesting to see how we kind of you know not get too high from this pass win uh you know get back down it’s come back down to business here and uh you know I’m loving the

Confidence with with with Drew I don’t know what the status is for Gino going into the next week but um it’s a different gives a different taste different flavor there you know Drew’s kind of a little Gunslinger out there he’s not hesitating to throw the ball um

It’s been nice for the offense I think continue to run the ball is G be you know run the ball and stop it and stop in the run the the goto going into uh this week’s game yeah what what do you think Jason what do you think about uh going going up against

Tennessee I’m worried that it’s there it’s a 10 o’clock game but apparently we’ve done pretty well this year with as of late in early games away so it might might benefit us I’m thinking but um no I’m I’m I’m agreeing with Walter we got to stop the run especially with that

With that team the way that that team runs is is ridiculous yeah so hopefully well they got they got a beast in the backfield I mean that guy you know yeah yeah the last time play him he killed us yeah and we gave up 140 yards to to the

Eagles on the on the ground and that’s not the you know I mean that’s their Forte is the Run game but the Swift is not a great run I mean he’s he’s a good running back but he’s a pretty Shifty running back yeah he’s grown on me there

Been watching a couple of his games he came out of nowhere I don’t know where he came from but he runs hard you yeah but he’s not he’s not Henry you know that’s that’s GNA be that’s a that’s a that’s a whole load in itself there you

Got to go up there bring your feet no arm tackles you know it’s just really disciplined you know I W say basic football but yeah you just got to go out there and Tackle wrap up you know and then we got then we got the Steelers at

Home you know the Steelers are you know a formable another you know great running back um you know sometimes when they but they you know their offense is struggling they’ve got a great defense uh but I like the fact we have them at home yeah and and then uh and then we

End up with the Cardinals right yeah I think that the Cardinals the Trap game you know their their record is down there that could be one they like oh we we we got this in the bag but those are the ones that kind of get past you there

You know they had nothing to lose they had nothing to lose and then we’ll if we if we’re winning you know we win these next two games and we have that play playoff spot like it’s going to be a big time game and they’re going to be like

Hey let’s not let the Seahawks go to the playoffs so they’re play playoffs yeah it’s gonna be their Super Bowl yeah it is yeah it’s gonna be it’s gonna be a big game for them so that’s gonna be that’s gonna be a tough game there I can

See that one being tough they always play as it’s there too isn’t it I believe so that play I think I think I think I think we’re away home and away okay yeah that that that that stadium in Glendale is we don’t have very much luck there do we injuries and

Crazy six to3 games or three to three games I mean anything can happen in that Stadium yeah so what do you think Arnie I I like our chances I honestly like I said I don’t watch the game too much like everybody else but you know what were saying I’m I’m you know ground

Chuck guy so run the ball stop the run the ball stop the run that’s all I can say and then you know uh play action is always important that but you’re gonna run the ball first yeah so like we got yeah K Ken Walker has to get at least 20

Touches whether it’s pass or run I mean I think it seems like once if he’s getting the ball you know game outcome games go in our favor yeah yeah it always seems to be later in the game where he where he breaks one too it’s like The Late Late third quarter he just

Gets something crazy man a screen even if a screen or something got something out the back field and gets 20 30 yards like that changes everything for our offense and the mentality of the team when he gets those plays out yep you know all right big running back one

Thing we used to tell them just nail them down to the ground because wear them out at the end of the game but I don’t know you could do that anymore because you know offens players protected so much but we just used to tell them and just you know hit him and

Then put him on the ground make him wear out at the end of the game and then see how it happen but I don’t I don’t know if could do that anymore but anyway yeah it it is a little bit different game you know I I think I think the the legion of

Boom was the the last of when we were seeing the big hits and the you know that kind of thing where um what what was the ESPN segment Walter um from for which one when when they showed the big hits what what was that segment called I know you guys were on

It every weekend um it was maybe it was maybe it was like big or something know it was not he gotos it was something they call it and they’d have they’d have these big Just Hits and there was a big hit this last week it’s jacked up jacked

Up yeah jacked up every want you know you want to see those hits but um you know there was a big hit this weekend and uh and the the Steelers DB is suspended for the rest of the season for making a big hit uh you know it it I

Think he even LED with his shoulder but he went at the head with the shoulder I mean he jacked him well yeah he was he was diving for the catch midair and then ran into him and he kind of got you know uh folded up wasn’t helmet to helmet was

It I thought no I think I think it was just the manner of the hit of him being completely off the ground and hitting him to where it was like it was what it was more of like you got he got suspended for how bad it looked and he

Could have been seriously injured I I never seeing a play like that with um we were playing the Bears I think 2011 and it was uh Johnny Knox he he entered his career playing us if I’m not mistaken yeah kind of defensive lineman just came in and

Kind of got folded up same kind of capacity there and he’s a smaller guy it just yeah didn’t yeah didn’t work out for him I get player safety and and and I totally I’m to totally for that but they’re expecting these young men to uh defy the laws of physics I mean they’re

Already in midair what what how you going to stop it I mean you got two forces going at each other how how and and and you know these poor guys they’re just they’re just doing their job they’re playing ball and now now this poor kids out for the rest of the season

Yeah I and and you know you stand and watch him catch the ball because he’s he’s put himself in an awkward position so you got to let him catch it yeah you’re defend it and you know and so it’s it’s permeating and we’ve been talking about this and this is g to be

More than five minutes so I but it gets frustrating watching guys it used to be you know just everyone flying at the guy with the ball and now we’re seeing guys stand and watching you know a little bit you know and and giving like shoulders and giving elbows and yeah yeah anyways

Even even that could cause injury too being well yeah not going 100 Mil 100 miles an hour if you stand around you know it’s either hit or get hit um well yeah I mean it’s I mean you have to I me you have to protect yourself I it’s it’s

Like one of the plays with the running back I think maybe a couple weekends ago you know he got fined because he was DB was coming up lowering his shoulder trying to H hit him and he lowered his shoulder to take on the hit and he got f

For uh being too aggressive there and it’s just like that’s kind of that’s kind of wild out there I mean on man yeah you gotta protect yourself at all costs out there I mean that’s that’s just the nature of the game but to have to go full speed and then you know try

To find a way to make a judgment to get out the way so that way you don’t you know end your season and get suspended because you know he’s diving for the play you’re not knowing he’s going to take off you know take off from his feet

And and go make the diving play you’re just trying to meet within the ball is going to be at so it gets it gets pretty tough out there all right so I had to get the magic I had to get the Magic Helmet aren’t you g to appreciate this

All right hey that’s a thing of beauty wait here’s the thing when they when they do the throwback jerseys and we talked about this their helmets are so pretty and silvery this look at this is like spray paint you know I mean it’s so different man I those are

Throwback jerseys no they’re way too pretty you know this thing yeah it’s got a shine to it but oh man anyhow so in here are the tickets all right so my lovely assistant hry don’t drop the Jersey one job all right here we go Amry come on in say hi to everybody there’s

Amry all right don’t look so she’s G to grab a handful of tickets so so that way you guys know there’s not one stuck to the side so she has a handful of tickets don’t look don’t look don’t look and then I’m going to pull one and man Jason if V you we’re

We’re in big trouble brother please don’t pick me please don’t pick me so hey this is really cool um we had a handful of people give us some pretty good size donations which is really nice I got to meet this person when we were at the Rams game uh and we took some

Photos with uh with Chris Warren and it’s Margaret triple l i I know you’re watching and if you’re not watching you a friend of yours is because it’s either Sharon or somebody who’s going to be watching this um you want a jersey hit me up send me your address so we’ll get

It mailed out to you we appreciate all the 12 Coach Arie thank you for joining us brother man so great to see you again Leo one thing I want to say something about the island of Maui oh yes okay uh most people remember uh town called Laha

Got burned out by wildfire and the island island of Maui itself is hurting right now uh some I heard some social media saying don’t go there because the fire but people there need business so if anybody thinking about going vacation please go to Maui and I beg you for

People enjoy the Aloha over there please everybody go visit Maui okay spend some my money over there because a lot of people lost everything the people have to get out of the house middle of the night only what they had on you know so uh I want everybody to know please go to

Maui spend money there I’m not asking for donation just enjoy yourself over there and then well you know the timing the timing is everything uh uh Arie um I just had a conversation with a a group that likes to put together golf events and use former players and and and

Create in a whole event like in Scotland Ireland but uh I’m gonna reach out to them about structuring a Seahawk player and 12 golf event in in in Lina in in Maui they have gorgeous courses we all know that capala kopali we can pick one

There uh and go shopping in La laah we just had an NFL PA event there earlier this year and Amry and I we were in lahina doing our shopping and then just a couple months later that tragedy happened so I’m going to speak to them about putting together a deal take it

Some time and maybe at the first part of the year or halfway through the year and we’ll try and and do something we’ll put it on blast um and see if we could do a Seahawk event over in L and have them put it together for us yeah it’s going

To be years to get the city rebuilt or even rebuild so not just this year probably five year from now if you have a vacation plan what planning to go vacation think about Maui beautiful place beautiful people beautiful beach uh you know just go over there spend and money on yourself not anybody

Else and but you know just enjoy the island and I want everybody to spread the words you know don’t look at the social media just if you know any if you hear anybody going on vacation mention Mari for me or right buddy way I appreciate you coming on it’s great

Sponsors are GNA be put on blast and then we’re going to be at the Super Bowl all week uh the hawk talk uh I don’t know if Walter is going to be able to make it out but we’re going to be on media row all week interviewing

People going to events and we’re figure out a way for people to join us so stay tuned for that it’ll be really inexpensive but if you want to hang out on media row virtually with us uh we’re gonna find out an inexpensive way for people to join us uh going to the events
