Hi my name is Grant Halverson and I’m a Master Instructor at the Aviara Golf Academy. Today I’d like to talk to you a little about the release of the golf club; it’s a very misunderstood part of the game. Most people feel like the release of the golf club is actual motion of your hands moving this way going through the golf ball and that’s a very common mistake in a higher handicapper. As they swing the golf club, their body stops and their hands go and the club actually releases behind the ball losing all the speed. When it does that it comes in more steeply than the golf ball, robbing them of distance and accuracy.
The proper release of the golf club stems from good body rotation with tension free arms. So if we can work on making our good turn going back and then from making that good turn, getting our body moving forward and around while the club is staying behind our body and then allowing our arms to extend fully to the target. The hands do not let the club hit past them before the ball is struck. So we want to feel the hands get past the ball before the club head strikes it and the extension comes out to the target this way. So if you feel like you have a very long right arm past the ball reaching to the target, you’re going to have a great vision of extension and a great release of the golf club.
If you work on this on the driving range, you’re going to add accuracy and a great deal of distance.

I appreciate the feedback and the kind words, Justin.
Thank you for the kind words, tdelaify, and for subscribing!
Top Tip!
Thank you, James, for the kind words.
Hello airplaneking. Good players have many different looks past impact depending on grip, swing mechanics and shot shape. Since you are hitting the ball solidly and your club is back to 90 degrees out in front of you, it doesn’t sound like you are flipping through impact, but rehinging. If you “flipped”, your left wrist would be cupped and the shaft would be pointing well left of the target.
It might be that you just need to continue rotating your body through to the target. As Grant describes this release, notice that his body continues to turn up through to his stable left side. When the body slows down or stops too soon, it can cause the club to flip, or rehinge, too soon.
Great tip!
good video. in fact very good video.
Thank you, gysgtallen1, for the kind words.
old man sport…
I 'm sure this going to help my ball striking. Its been a mystery to why a reasonably athletic big guy like me is outdriven by older punier guys no matter how I tried to slam the ball in frustration.I'm going to go to the practice fairway today to practice the moves. thanks a lot nuglfacademy.
You're very welcome, Donald.
is this only for woods, or for irons to?
Hello Ryan. Great question. This is for all clubs.
Good stuff Grant! Much appreciated.
We appreciate the kind words, Bob
Hey Grant, you say in the video that you are a PGA Master Instructor…however when I look on PGALinks for your name, there's no one named Grant Halverson listed on any of the PGA Master Professional lists?
Which PGA section are you in?
Grant Halverson is a Master Instructor at Kip Puterbaugh’s Aviara Golf Academy in Carlsbad, California where he has been on staff since 1999.
So in other words, think "hitting a fade"……keeping the hands ahead, and hit one OB right….I hate this game. But let's all keep paying 100-200 an hour to guys like "Grant"…who swear they've got the answers. And after a package of 4 lessons and a 1000 bucks, you'll be thrilled, too.
Great tip! Would love to get lessons from him someday!
People making comments on here must understand that there is no "holy grail" or "secret" to the golf swing. There is also more than one correct way of swinging a golf club. There are lots of swings taught here on the internet. Grant seems to teach a swing whereby the club trails behind the body on the downswing and then you need good timing and fast hands/arms to square up the club at impact. If you don't have good timing then the club "gets stuck". Now there are lots of touring golf professionals who employ this type of swing successfully. If you like this sort of swing then support this golf teacher. If you do not like this sort of swing then rather support a teacher that teaches something else like a body release whereby you keep the club more in front of your body and then square up the club with body rotation. But please do not shoot down a golf teacher down just because he is teaching something that your amateur (10-36 handicap) mentality perceive as incorrect. Tiger Woods had a successful career with a swing taught by Butch Harmon. Tiger is now also having a successful career with a very different swing taught by Sean Foley. Tiger will still be successful even if he uses the Two Plain Swing, Stack and Tilt Swing, the Right Sided Swing, the Rotary Swing, The Square to Square Swing, etc. because Tiger and so many other professional golfers can get in the correct impact position time after time. Then it does not matter what swing you use. The swing is only used to help you get into the proper impact position. Look at Bubba Watson and Tommy Gainey. They don't have golf swing that can be taught. Yet they both get to the same impact position. Amateur golfers must spend less time worrying about the backswing and what body part starts the downswing.

This helped me perfect my game in Wii Sports Club – before, just about every time I released, the shot would either hook sharply, lose a lot of power, or both. Now I can proudly say that these aggravations are a thing of the past!
And please, no hate comments about the Wii U, OK? It's a good freakin' system and I don't give a —- what anyone thinks. And I hold trolls in even lower regard.
Good tip for low handicapper maybe, very dangerous in general for a high handicapper to try this as most hit slices and this tip wont help and will promote a chicken wing if anything. High handicappers, stay connected, keep that left elbow tucked to your side after impact which will help a better release of the wrists and the clubhead
Sorry Eoghan, this is a great tip for high handicap golfers. Slices and blocks are because they cast the club and don"t release it. The video focus on club head getting to the ball before the hands is spot on.
Good Stuff…a proper RELEASE needs body rotation w/ tension free arms. From TOP, body moves fwd & around. FEEL clubhead stay behind body. FEEL hands pass ball b4 clubhead. ALLOW arms 2 extend fully 2 target
Releasing the club is a fallacy..The club should never be rolled with the hands or wrist after impact.. The club should be held square from impact to finish
former comment is wrong but extention and rotation is right,
Good video, people always hit with the hands, really flipping at the ball…holding back and not letting the club get past the hand is the difference between having a golf swing and not. Figure this out and everything you heard about golf suddenly all makes sense…you need a golf swing first!
Dangerous video; REMOVE IT.This was sent to me by one of my students, and it has set my student back just when I was making some progress. Anyone who has taught high handicappers knows that their problem is not to quick of face rotation though the ball : IT'S NO ROTATION THROUGH THE BALL -while they fall back to PICK UP the ball. Go to any driving range and that is the dominant move: HANGING BACK WITH THE FACE "SQUARE" ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE SWING. Telling a high (or mid even) handicapper to "hold" the release and rotate the body through the ball reinforces their problem. BAD. you've given my student licence to leave the face open. Now for the 1% of golgers who know how to hit the ball, this is just a reinforcement of LAG. No new ground here.
Thanks so much for your tips.

When I try your method of release, I block the shot especially with the longer clubs. Don't u want the clubhead passing the hands at impact? I think I read that on a bubble gum wrapper golf tip once.
Watch Jack swing and see if the club passes his hands……..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsX68WZmnC8. at 1.20 in the video the club head passes the hands/body and releases clearly.
This is terrific..brief and to the point.
Last week was on the range warming up in the morning. My back was a little stiff, and because of that my lower body seemed quieter, which somehow allowed me to make a full release of the club without consciously trying to manipulate the club! It felt almost effortless, as I hit solid shot after solid shot, with a nice tight draw! On the course, my back loosened up, my natural swing took over, and the natural release I had on the range disappeared. Any guesses what I did on the range to cause a proper release to magically appear? I've been playing almost thirty years, a low teens handicap, and was genuinely surprised to actually feel a proper release, if only for a short time on the range, which I have not been able to replicate, without toying with my grip pressure.
One of the few that actually knows and how to communicate the release.
Well he clearly explains why people chunk shots with woods….good video
This is a good video, I constantly struggle with my swing, but when I focus on letting my wrists unhinge at the ball I generate more power and much better contact, granted it needs to be taught that the body swings, and then the hands release, but a big reason for high handicap is casting.
Golf swing takes about a second….good luck trying to remember ANY swing tip on here while swinging the club. A PGA tour player once told me that those of us who don't play golf for a living are better off just swinging freely, and trying to break 90. Forget the "Par 72" on the scorecard. He said we'd all relax and actually play better.
This fellow is lost
Bull shit
Heck, the last comment besides mine was 2 years ago? Well I just wanted to compliment the pro with what I thought about this info: 'Short' and 'Sweet.' The only thing I would add is to keep the spine angle through impact. Sort of like skipping a flat rock on the water. In other words, don't come out of your swing prematurely. This will help with accuracy. 2 thumbs up for this vid.
These golf swing techniques “mowosam press” (Google it) cover the golf swing in terrific detail. The guide’s basis for its tips are the tactics and tricks of skilled golf players from world competitions. Midway down the guide and I am really amazed. I have scored 3 consecutive low 80s rounds after reading through this particular book…
Thought I got it the video, I' cant avoid to make chiken wing. Is there a driil for that? Thanks. Roberto.
Love the simple explanation of this. Release has always been an issue for me as I tend to have the club face too open at impact, sending the ball to the right. Will now be focusing on having relaxed arms and making my proper rotation in my downswing.
That’s great Grant, straight to the point and well executed
These golf swing secrets and techniques , Jοmtοnο Naha (Go ogle it) go over the golf swing in great detail. I`ve read 1/2 of this particular book and also the ideas are wonderful. I`ve scored 3 consecutive low 80s rounds after studying this e-book..
Grant I just discovered your video..I have gone to the driving range one time and played once. this video really helped. 1:20 in length. Why didn't I see this video 11 years ago. Loved the visual of the right arm being longer than the left..
