  1. Zidane's magic often happened in the modfield. Despite having good stats, he was a classic playmaker compared to guys like Ronaldinho who was more like a false 9. Which means it were the defensive midfielders who had to face him 1 vs 1 most of the time. So if Guardiola of all people say he was a menace then I'm inclined to believe him.

  2. When I studied in university there used to be a guy that looked and played like Zidane. Really crazy. How that guy didnt become a professional player is beyond me. One day I played with him together. It was amazing. For the first time in my life I played with someone that really understood how to play the game.

  3. Pep shouldn't feel too bad. Zizou could run rings around anyone, and Pep was little more than a good journeyman player.

  4. Sometimes you just forget how he just so elegantly creates space for himself, its so pleasing to the eye.

  5. Spain couldn't match France for individual genius, so it created a system and style of play that could not only match France but overcome it.

  6. Zidane won 3 champions leagues as coach of madrid in the blink of an eye and unknown to management at the time but it took pep 14 years to reach that accomplishment as an established coach. Zidane showing him who the real boss is off the field too.

  7. Phenomenal clips. The balance, power, speed of thought. Keane used to always point out that on top of all his skills, he's a big fucking guy! Very strong, can easily hold off tackles. Add in the leadership ability and he was the best out and out midfielder of his era. Has there been a better since?

  8. Man, Zidane looked faster than usual in this game.. sometimes I forget how quick he actually was in his 20s, I'm too used to 2002-06 Zizou (I was born in 95).
Honestly, if he had a Cristiano (or a fit Ronaldo) as his team mate, I'm sure he'd have as many trophies as Modric, Xavi, Iniesta etc.

  9. In the first half of that game his passes – a mix of long and short – completed was 100%. (Stat from Gary Linekar commenting for the BBC on the game that day.)
