Payne Stewart was a formidable competitor at The Open during the 1980s – securing four top-ten finishes across seven Open Championships, including a second-place finish in 1985.

In 1990, St Andrews played host to The 119th Open and Stewart continued his impressive run of form.

In his first three rounds the American shot a hattrick of 68s placing him in tied second going into the final round. Unfortunately for the man adorned in the colours of the American flag, he was unable to catch the eventual winner, Sir Nick Faldo. However, he did secure his second runners-up finish at The Open Championship.

Let’s go back to the 1990s and relive the greatness that was Payne Stewart.

  1. Brilliant video, really enjoyed watching it! I watched that open as a 15 year old with my dad. We watched trevino mosty, but I can still remember watching payne, azinger and love hitting tee shots on the 17th on a practice day. They played from behind the back of the tee, hitting drivers over a 3 foot fence! (Maybe it wasnt hard enough for them as it was lol). I can still remember stewart egging the others on to try and hit a guy sitting on the corner of the sheds who was watching them thru binoculars! i was a big fan of his. Great swing, great character, a tragic loss!!

  2. Is last competitive round was the 1999 Ryder Cup. His singles match with Colin montgomerie was tied and due to the Boston fans continually harassing Colin for 18 holes, Payne picked up Colin's ball on the 18th hole which designated a tie between them. Colin clapped as Payne picked up Colin's ball and was walking towards him to give it to him.
