I remember the day the PIF deal was announced, and the Golf Channel commentators were trying to put a positive spin on the announcement with all the money into the game etc. while trying to dismiss the concerns it was raising. Rory had fought the good fight and its clear the Tour will sell its soul for more money (because that’s what the players want) and it’s the easy short-term decision. Whether that’s in the long-term interests of the game is another matter. I suspect Rory was taking the longer-term view and cannot see the inevitable sell-out. Also, Tiger is on the Board now.
There is a delusional view at the very top of Men’s Professional Golf they are being hard done to and not being adequately rewarded. They want to compare themselves to what the likes of NFL players make, while ignoring they attract a tenth of the viewing audience. Some point to LIV and see how much money has been thrown at the players yet happily ignore the near zero viewing audiences and the billions (yes billions) that have been pumped into this endeavour with NO commercial light at the end of the tunnel.
What is being ignored throughout these discussions is the financial viability of Men Professional Golf and how it makes money. They talk about growing the game, but never explain how. We are going to see a lot of change, but if anybody thinks PIF is going to subsidise a bunch of wealth sportsman without an adequate return they are kidding themselves. With all the business plans and consultants from McKinsey, based on what LIV has delivered so far, its failing miserably financially, and for a Sovereign Wealth Fund (or Private Equity) that’s the only measure of success.
Rory can get on with his life and do what he does best which is play golf and try to insulate himself from any fallout. It’s going to be a bumpy ride.
Cantley Ryder Cup incident – Rory went out of his to clear his position up. Then quit. Timing, he has bitter feelings that could cloud his participance in his PGA role. – MANY?
One thing is clear Rory quitting is for the best for all parties involved. They guy is just tooooooo emotional.
Why did he quit? Did I mention he is too emotional?
The funny thing is for two years we hear Rory is not just about himself but now he says he likes to be busy but only focusing on himself.
I’m honestly kinda done listening to Rory. Or wondering whats going on in that head. But I feel like he just told us: he likes to focus on himself.
If I did spend more energy thinking about Rory I would get into this complicated question of if he cares about himself mostly, has he officially been doing exactly that the last two years (as many have implied): taking care of numero uno.
And then you would have to wonder if he now realizes the best thing for himself is to stop polarizing himself?
It goes on and on and on with Rory.
He’s is big pandoras box, but at the end of the day he removed himself from the table—so if he gets a break from all this mess, much of it created by him, then it’s only fair we deserve a bit of a break from Rory.
