First like but seriously this channel is great and i wish it was around when I started so i wouldn't burn money on plastic. referring to him roasting my entire bag. the only safe things i have left are the judge justice and mako 3
Players sign contracts w manufacturers (we'll call them teams) just like any team sport. They also get paid based on their performance so I don't think there's an issue with HOW they are paid, it's just the amount in most cases. There simply isn't nearly as much money in the sport compared to others.
Hot take: Get a job… You don't need to hit the gym, work on your nutrition, and study your competition like most other sports. You should have, and most professional disc golf "athletes" probably do have enough time to either get better or get a job while still finding time to practice. That aside, big fan of the game and hopefully it continues to grow 👍🏻
I live in the same town as slingshot disc golf, play disc golf almost every day, rain or shine. I throw like 250' on a far throw, got a good course with holes that are wooded, and holes that are open. is there one disc you recommend for someone who can't throw more than a nine speed? also, would you recommend mystery boxes?
Not sure which other sports Simon is talking about, but all pro atheletes are entertainers. The more popular the sport the more money the players make.
The pro tour life is a kind of circus. I don’t mean that as a derogatory comment on people’s character, it’s a comment on how the tour works as a business. It’s exactly like a circus. It comes to town, sells tickets and concessions and moves on.
During Covid, the popularity of disc golf exploded, but now its growth has leveled off to normal, according to Seppo Paju. In order for disc golf to grow close to the biggest sports, it requires large investments from manufacturers.
omg, why is this so hard for people to see the major fault. manufactures need to pay more to sponsor tournaments and the commentators shouldnt be their sales reps. more money in the purse gets everyone paid and pushes players to win not sell discs. people spend hundreds on discs but complain about paying for a round of golf, this puts nothing back into courses and growing the sport. peopl stop buying every disc, pay for coverage and your rounds and the sport will sustain
Hopefully disc golf will remain lucky and not be overrun by greed as most professional sports are today. But there are sure a lot people today doing their best to profit off of it, very unfortunate.
I think you are absolutely right. These are my favorite types of videos on YT aside from actual play. You guys , Foundation, Alden H, Broderic, Nate Turner all have some charisma and throw discs. I am here for it
Pro Disc golf does not have enough advertisement/ visual media money for pro players to just make money from competing. Disc golf is harder and more expensive to produce a high quality video viewing product that will draw enough viewers in to bring in that multimedia money.
As a disc golfer for the past 3 decades, knowing how physically demanding this sport can be, these pros are 100% professional athletes. Im so happy to see them making money nowadays. Keep buying signature discs people.
The only way disc golf makes big money is in the mainstream. Where can I see it. A pay service online or replays on YT. That is not a business model to bring in big money, and never will be.
Views is always an interesting thing to think about. Is 16,000 a lot? Yes. Is it a lot compared to the topic? No. Is it a lot compared to the world? No. Also you can upload something that's never been seen before and it gets 38 views, then you upload another video the same day copying someone and it gets 3.8 million views.
Miss Frisbees is a perfect example, she won on the tour this year, but has had her channel a lot longer and ppl watch it because it's good and relatable content. You don't need much more than that to get a good viewership.
Totally agree with all this it's tough out on the road man. Exactly why my mental game went shit. Early days when life was beating my ass. Sometimes forced to play on empty stomachs just to save for gas. Wasted almost 280k in the last 13 years chasing this dream. It ruined my life. Honestly, I can't give up at this point though gotta see this through. I've left good hearted women that loved me. Made sure I didn't have kids. Stayed focused and driven 100. Saved all my money busting my ass day in and day out. Just to be a champ. Been choking my whole career, but i know deep inside what I'm made of. I've lost dear friends touring on the road. Rip Matt Mayo and Brendan G. People that meant the most that kept me pushing through the bullshit. I've had a big break through these last few months. Hoping the hard work pays off. If you truly love this game as much as I do. A true f-in die-hard, then touring life cost should be the least of your worries. Be in the moment always. Get your foot in as many doors as possible. Connect! Been so many times frustrated punching my steering wheel missing out watching and learning like I should of. It's a tough mountain to climb without anyone helping you or supporting you financially. You gotta dig deep. You gotta want it. You do that….then the disc golf family my friend sheds light and will uplift and support anyone who loves the games. We are all one and dammit we should start acting like it. And start moving that ass a little on the field. If everybody love everybody the sport will rise even bigger than we ever imagine. I use to be a real real angry man broken asf this game truly has saved my life. Given me a reason to fight for what I love. Worth every penny spent! Don't lose sight in social media bullshit. Get the F out there and live, and experience the big show. See the country before your bones won't allow you no more.Test yourself to the max. Keep pushing. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Love you all be back one day soon! ✌️
Maybe all these “pros” who aren’t making any money should go do other things with their lives instead. Waking up at 35 years old and realizing you’re flat broke and fucked would suck. All for the love of the game??
I dont like how you say "Alden Harris happen to have some great discgolfers as friends" as if he isnt one himself, and as if he wouldn't make it without them. It's because people like Alden we have people like Alden my man, that show it works.
Good one. Seems to me many of the pros are saddled with wet cardboard personalities. But it's possible to succeed even when so cursed, I give you McNuggets, though his skill at winning has been remarkable, which makes a difference ! Alden's been creative, he's a good disc slinger too ! Enjoyed this video focusing on expenses and entertainment, such is the business of pro sport.
Simon is a brand, not a product. And I think he worked very hard to make his brand.I bought his disc because I like him, not because it's the best disc.
Well it all depends on demand and supply. How many people watched the worlds? A little over 200.000 on Jomez and I dont know how many watched it live but it cant be more than Jomez. And that is why disc golf does not have any big sponsors. And perhaps the manufactures should pay the players more, but will that mean fewer sponsored players?
Bro you graduated college with a bachelor degree. They taught you how to use spam titles for more clicks. Holy chit. We are not worthy. Im just gonna click the hide channel button, I am too overwhelmed by all of the value you just brought into my life
Disc golf is still a cannibalistic sport. That is to say there are no outside sources of funds, and so the sport literally eats itself to keep pro players fed. And this is in a sport where volunteers are required to officiate on every hole. The situation will remain unchanged until large non-disc-golf sponsors enter the game, and start pouring money into it. I predict it will be another 5 years before the big money starts to enter disc golf, and 5 years after that the first group of pro disc golfers will rent a private plane for the season. And 5 years later (2033) we'll see the first individual disc golfer rent a plane for the season. Five years after that the players might start buying their own planes.
FYI: Several years ago, Stokely made a fantastic video where he detailed a process a professional player can support themselves on tour without having to rely of winnings. That process will still work today.
ALL Athletes are entertainers at the end of the day. How each sport compensates the entertainer is the question. Disc Golf has grown leaps and bounds in just the last few years. If you compare it to what other sports paid their players in the early days of the sport; NFL, MLB PGA, etc. There is a lot of similarity in the evolution of disc golf. The pay will come as the revenue generation increases. It is happening. The "athletes" that have developed their own brand are the ones who are finding the most success and recurring income.
It's one of the few sports where the money to be made is in the products to play/consume the sport. Besides sneakers, you don't see NBA players making 90% of their earnings from selling basketballs, practice targets, or elbow/knee braces. Whether it's the right business model or not, it's the only way the sport can generate 6 and 7 figure valuation for particular players.
I think we're 10 to 20 years from seeing some of the current "royalty" translating clout and resources into real professional sport money. Consider Cease and McBeth – two multimillionaires who have 8 figure income potentials through their remaining careers. If their disc golf course ventures become fruitful, let's say they acquire and develop a total of 5 championship level, destination courses in the next 10 years. Well they might be able to say fuck it and compete directly with the pro tour and have their own mini tour with 6 figure 1st prizes at each, using their name and brand to leverage the investment from companies.
The new TV deal and the increase in regular people playing will help bring disc golf into the mainstream. The one thing that makes most major sports' athletes big money is sponsorships from big name companies, like Gatorade. That comes when regular people get interested and can pick up a sport and play it anywhere or for cheap. Think baseball, basketball, and football, or even soccer. Put at least a 9 hole putter course at most parks, and push $40 starter kits. Disc golf has tons of potential, but it needs better PR and management outside of the pro tour. Get major retailers like Walmart, Target, and Dick's to carry baskets and starter packs more regularly, and advertise them more heavily.

For the record Alden is a great player just doesn’t have any big wins ( YET )

Hey I’m a traveling disc golfer. Would love to chat more!
You MF"er. You got me.
Adjusted for inflation, $15,000 in 2001 is equal to $25,586 in 2023. Helps put what Avery said in a better perspective.

Ball golf dosent pay people to play. You pay for the right to play that tournament. Pros make more off sponsorship than wwinnings.
Love your videos

I am sure the pay will rise as the sport does. Like any other sport

Seems like they need more sponsors like Monster energy or redbull…beer…clothing brands etc
