Tip of The Day – Trying to force the distance with the upper body will cause you to lose consistency and power. The softer you get, the easier the power will come.

Historically, putting has been one of the most confusing aspects of golf. Putting styles can be extremely varied, yet the player still considered to be a good putter. To be an excellent and consistent putter, however, technique needs to be at the highest mechanical level possible. Golfers typically learn to putt from a very short distance, which we at Gravity Golf consider to be the most difficult approach to proper learning. The reason for this opinion emanates from the enormous level of subtlety involved in hitting very short putts. There are many possible techniques for powering a three footer, most of which send some level of energy back into the body, creating a plane-change and thus requiring a compensation for the ball to go into the hole. Hitting putts from one-hundred feet or more, especially in a three-mode, requires very high quality mechanics to consistently get the ball close to the hole, which can easily be felt when moving the ball such a great distance.

Find the largest green that you can, and putt the entire length of the green in an uphill direction (at least 100 feet), in a three mode. Try to get the smoothest roll on the ball possible (no bounces), and focus on the distance needed to feel comfortable hitting it past the hole. Doing this in a three mode stops your brain from compensating and forces it to identify and isolate perfect putting technique. Once you are adept at putting the ball just past the hole from a great distance, reduce the distance by 20% and begin again. It may take several putting sessions to become proficient at more than 100 feet, but be patient with yourself. Each time you master the three mode from a long distance, shorten the length by an additional 20%. The last putts you will learn are the ones inside of five feet. The high quality mechanics that you develop from the greater distances will automatically feed into the shorter, more subtle putts.

Side Note: When setting the putter into motion, play with the intensity of the heave and the softness in your shoulders.
