Feels like a weird thing to insist that Auston Matthews remaining on Toronto is the thing you want MOST in the league.

For those of you saying you want him to leave. Hes our top goal scorer and best player every regular season. Without him, we probably wouldnt have made the playoffs for the past 7 years. Think about it. And to those of you saying he doesnt do much in the playoffs, he does. He played amazing in the first round this year and was one of the main reasons we broke the curse. The second round loss wasnt only his fault, his shots on goal every game were insane, but Brobovsky was tough as a wall. He tries his hardest, and he is our best player. Sometimes things dont go your way. For those of you saying you want him to leave or you dont mind if he leaves, think again. Maybe its someome else who needs to be traded. Like Nylander or Tavares. Overall, hope to god he stays, would be heartbroken if he didn't. 🤞🏻

I don't think Tkachuk was exactly lying there either though to be honest, I kinda believe in those stories that he wanted an extension and some other commitments earlier and the Flames fumbled it, and I'm guessing that interview was a bit before Johnny's exit which probably made a big difference.
Anyways, I still think that 14mil for any one player in the NHL is too much with the cap the way it is, I don't expect him to take less, but if he wants to win I think he should really consider not taking a substantial raise
The Leafs need to do what's best for the Leafs. Mathews will do what's best for him. He's not worth more than $11.5MM, his performance declined this year and that's not the right trajectory.
It would be abjectly stupid for the Leafs to sign him long term. That kills your chance to build a competitive and balanced team.
I cant see him going to the Coyotes. That organization is an embarrassment. The Leaf fans seem to not want him back. That might one of his considerations too.

The leafs are in a pretty good position to lock these players up long term. Not another 2-4 year contract. The cap has been stagnant. They can sign them for the percentage of the cap as right now. But the cap should skyrocket the year after this once the money is paid back to owners by players. So come after this season when the cap goes up.. These contracts signed now are going to be a good deal.
Toronto needs to burn down the house, not jerseys. But they won't because they're a top revenue team, they don't care about winning cups, they're making massive revenues

Here's my thought. He probably wants to work out a extension so he can't second guess the decision after the playoffs next year. Which most players do. I don't the Leafs would miss playoffs like the Blackhawks did. Kane would of stayed if the Blackhawks was a playoff team last season. But they wasn't and after he realized they wasn't making playoffs that's when he left Chicago. So I would say If the Leafs don't make the Finals next year then Matthews is gone especially if he hasn't signed anything this off-season. So those are the only 2 ways you keep him. Sign him in the off-season or go and win a cup then re sign him. The second option seems risky.
