One reason i shy away from strong lofted irons is a 40 degree wedge is really going to foul* up the lower end of my bag. The important end.
*for foul choose any other word starting with F
Great analysis. I like how you came to your conclusion.
Awesome of advice you gave me was to stop hitting so far and start stopping balls on the green. Now I know when I hit my irons on approach, they're generally going to land and stop where I want them to rather than running out an extra 15-20 yards!
Liking PING. Just booked a fitting. Looking forward to play the i230 irons in the future. Already played with them and really like the look and feel.
Just don’t like this line. The I230 I do like.
my set of G430 goes 6i – 58deg which means I have 5 wedges in my bag.

You are da man!!!
I’m playing 50 yr old Walter Hagen Ultradyne ii.
Outrageously fun!!!
Old blades are better for your game than such a large chuck of metal
Come on guys, you can do it!
All the Best!!!
✌️
Simon great analysis again and the honesty we have come to expect from you my friend! I love learning more about fittings and the specs of clubs. 👍
I'm very happy with my set of Ping Eye2 BeCu. I have a mint set from 1i to LW ..but i leave out the 1i and play a TM R11s 3W instead
Bought a set of Callaway X-12 irons this week.
3-PW with memphis 10 steel shafts.
Total price £54.
Amazing clubs.
Not the time to mention I’ve bought the Wilson D9s 😂
Here's an interesting thought. If someone stuck to 3/4 swings as their full swing you definitely get better consistency with contact and don't lose any distance by using irons like this…..got a point or just nah?
Another interesting video Simon, I have to ask though, why do you sound like you are shouting a lot of the time? Is it the accoustics in your new studio messing up the audio?
Love the video. Honestly no need to be out on the course for something like this. Keep up the great work
Nice video.
This is why ping is an old man and old lady brand with G range
I had the same issue and got fitted into P790´s with a graphite shaft by Taylor Made directly. Literally 5 months later I had another fitting session and was looking at a Ping Driver. After getting fit into the Driver the salesguy told me that he would rather let me buy a new set of irons before buying a driver as these shafts don´t fit my swingspeed anymore (Independent fitter). I went ahead and got fitted for KBS $-Tapers 120 g Stiff with a Mizuno head. They instantly felt more secure that Regular flex graphite shafts and my 7 iron didn´t go unmanageably long anymore as the Mizunos are more traditionally lofted.
Hitting the ball extra far ist not something I am looking at at all when testing new clubs, as to be honest I don´t need the extra yards and rather prefer more consistency and stopping power. The most important thing is that the gapping of your clubs is right and with hitting a 7 iron 200 yards you will get problems on the lower end of the bag.
The only thing that was left over was that I was kinda pissed paying a lot for the P790´s that are not usable for me at all…
hey sas, love the vids 👍
I traded in my g425 irons for a set of callaway apex TCB's. The best thing is that I can use every club now. Before, it felt like the 5 iron and even 6 iron sometimes was way too difficult to hit (Probably because it was basically a 3 & 4 iron). The feel on the TCB's is a whole different world and every full shot just sticks on the green. Also got lucky and basically paid nothing out of pocket for the straight trade in👍🏼
Expensive clubs to make a mistake with. Look like standard clubs off the shelf…wILSON D9 FORGED is a much better club and a lot cheaper
WOW!! 265! Jeezus!! I would never ever find my ball when I hook it in the Wood's!! 218 !! Hell No! PW 150 That club takes the High Blood Pressure out of Golf?!! Those clubs take away the Semi Annual Trip to the Hospital ! What type of Metal is that?
Just subbed. I’m currently playing the g10’s. I would love to have those blue dots & distances. How much did they cost? Can I buy them?
I consider myself to be an average, athletic golfer and I'm looking into getting a utility or 2 iron. I hit my driver great (small draw as long as I don't grip too much with my right hand), but I don't feel comfortable with my 3 wood. I hit my irons great. My 21 degree 3 iron is about 220, so I figured if I throw in a 2 iron, it could replace the 3 wood. Rarely do I find myself more than 240 from the green in one.
Every time you kept saying “88 miles an hour,” I couldn’t stop thinking “back to the future.”
I play to an 11 and this past off season I got fitted into the G430s because I was looking for a higher flying ball with a steep decent angle because it suits my home course. I hit them great during my fitting but for whatever reason I just could not get along with them on the course. I ended up going back to an older set of Apexs that I own and am not sure as to what to do next.
Who ever fitted him; does not know how to fit people clubs….OMG! FACT!
I bought these in in May, and this is very accurate. I bought them as someone who has a fast swing speed but inconsistent striking (athletic beginner you could say) and a handicap of 24 and straight away found distance control difficult as really true strikes would fly so so far (200 yard 7 irons and 155 yard 45 degree "gap", which i now know is everyone else's pitching wedge). My handicap is now 16.7 and. I play with two guys off 6 and 11 (we all drive similar distance, the 6 ~10 yards further consistently) and pick my club by asking what they're playing and taking the number above out of my bag, often to still be long. I've had to buy new 50 and 54 degree wedges to build my own "gapping solution" These are Vokey blades… I love them so much more hit the 50 115 yards really consistently and bang on 100 for the 54. In summary everything you said here resonated and I feel more and more that I bought the wrong clubs. This is despite me loving the look. In short, only buy these if you really struggle for distance. Open to recommendations on what to go for next! 😀
Been there done that… Played X20 Callaway's for a decade and got fit in Hot Metal Pro's, didn't even make it half a season before moving to ZX7's
I love the gapping of my irons (Mizuno MP33), don't care about the number on the bottom. My 8 iron is 40 deg, just a tad stronger than the PW in these Pings!
'When this Baby hits 88…….. you're gonna see some serious shit!'
Only numbers they should stamp on the bottom of clubs are degrees of loft. The number of the iron is totally irrelevant now!
PXG 0211's are the worst offender at 28 degree 7i. I've kicked them out of my bag in favor of the Adam's CB3s. Best decision ever!
As always a fantastic video ! I sell inexpensive sets of golf clubs here in Canada so people can get into the sport. You help them realize preowned can work!
This is really interesting to me. I was fitted for the G430's and concluded I did not want a bag that required 5 wedges (the sales guys never mentioned the 'traditional loft' option). I wound up buying the G425's because they were much cheaper. I actually searched online for the G410's but they were not a whole lot less expensive used than the G425's were used.
So wait would you gap a wedge as a normal 9 iron?🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😊
Sure doesn’t look like Ping changed a whole lot from the G410 to the G425 to the G430 …🤔
Good video Simon! I'm so tired of the manufacturing jacking up lofts and distance ! Maybe we will all just need a 7 iron and 12 different wedges 😅😅😅 keep up the good work young man…….. Fan from the USA
Agrivating oral presentation.
Would you suggest going from a hot metal to a hot metal pro or should I go straight to the forged?
You have a nice swing. If you don't have the shaft lean, you need the low loft. Beginners with fast speed but flippy, don't de loft the club and hit super high. As soon as they got better, the clubs are too much
I’m in exactly that position – handicap 12.2 and on the way down, what should I look for next as progression from G410 irons with stiff shafts. I do like ping so what’s a good option to look at over the last few years of range put out by Ping
Freaking jacked lofts. If they keep this up half the set will be “wedges” in a few years. Stamping numbers on these heads instead of degrees of loft is nothing but psychological marketing.
Why don’t they change from having iron numbers and letters to just having loft numbers on the bottom of the club
