Keep the Left Arm “Straight” in Your Golf Swing (Big Mistake!)
This is one of the most common golf questions I get asked about the golf swing basics from beginner golfers. What should the left arm (or right arm for you lefties) do during the golf swing… should it stay straight or should it bend? Many times my students come to me saying they “collapse” the lead arm at the top of their backswing, so they try the opposite, keeping that left arm dead straight. Well… neither is going to help your swing. Let’s take a look at how the left arm moves in the golf swing.

I’ve heard keep the left arm straight all the time. “Add width” is what I’ve heard. And I try this by keeping my lead arm pinned against my chest. Doesn’t help me swing with any fluidity
I cant physically straighten my left arm got about 30 degree bend to straight , always thought its why i cant hit the ball very far. Had a couple of lessons after 25 years and now got my grip stance and getting rid of my out to in slice but still have a very low club speed. Is it a case of just training my body to hit it faster after all these years of hacking around courses ?
Most people starting golf have the excessive bending on the top of their swing hence the whole idea of "keeping it straight" is popular. I struggled with for years and this is what causing inconsistencies. If your angles change on top of the swing it's hard to find a proper way back to the ball and will never be consistent player with consistent swing. Your arm is perfectly straight Mat and always has been. Wish I could do the same lol
I think you'd better demonstrate this so we can actually see the bend in your left arm. When you swing at the end (4:57) your left arm looks absolutely straight throughout the entire backswing and up until strike.
Have a look at Ryan Fox's golf swing – his left arm gets to almost 90 degrees and he's a damn good ball striker.
Nice tip Coach! The whole waggle thing activating the body to me just feels like revving up that old engine…
