Random question – I really enjoy your videos but have not been able to find of you have any experience with Muira irons. If so, do u think they are worth it? Thx.
Love the video format for a quick summary. Never thought about a forged wedge before, but it does make a lot of cents? Maybe not. That could be the reason.
Interesting. How did they fair when playing from a bunker?
Good informative video, wedges are something of an enigma to many of us,with the myriad of grinds, bounce ect.
I have 45°PW,52°Gap,56•SW, and 64° (great for greenside bunkers,of which I find my fair share!)
Thanks for the review.
No, it has to do with manufacturing being easier and cheaper than forging. There are lots of choices for good forged wedges – Mizuno T22, Callaway, Miura,Edison, Ping Glide forged, Wilson Staff
The Extreme Black wedges are just pure golf porn.
Personally I carry a 50, 54 and 58 (54 has mid-high bounce, other 2 have low bounce). I find they have distinct roles and tbh if I only played a 50 and say 56 I wouldn't know what to carry as the 14th club – I do not need a chipper, a 3w is pointless in my hands as is a driving iron.
My Gen 2 PXG Forged wedges are lights out. I tried Ping Glide 4, Vokey SM9, Taylormade Hi Toe 3, Mizuno 22, and Cleveland CBX. The old chewed up PXGs hit further with more spin than all. Could it be an older sim with crappy balls causing the difference? Or are these wedges THAT good?
Would like to see Sim numbers as I’m in the market for these and don’t want to pay fitting fee to demo
Is the loft on a regular iron set wedge 48* usually/roughly?
Because if so, I would think 52* and 56* or 58* would be the ideal gapping overall.
Just thinking out loud….
Currently have my set's P and the Kirkland 3 wedge set in my bag. But have also got a 62* Ben Ross I love playing with.
Great Video Andy, I care PXG 0311 wedges a 52 and a 56. The feel is the best I have ever had in wedges and I've been playing for 35 years now. Love the looks of those wedges you profiled. Thanks for the honest content.
On real forged wedges where the whole club is forged these face tends to wear down very quickly. Another problem is that most forged wedges are made from soft stee that wears quite quickly and they tend to lose their loft and lie very quickly from use so you have to have them relofted and checked. Good wedges expensive to maintain and are usually made for the Pro level golfer by few serious companies.
You'd never catch me with a hybrid I use 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,Pw, Si, Driver, 3 Wood (Metal) and a Ping Berilliam Copper Anser. May slip an other CLEVELAND 588 TOUR action 56 or 60 rusty. Depending on course and conditions. Yours is a great blog.
My irons are all Wilson Staff tour blades which is FG17 steel very soft. 1977 model.
Andy will you be testing these against the current model you are using. They look very nice.
I've had Mizuno forged wedges in the past – my mate still games them (probably worn flat by now!). The feel was decent but the head was quite small. I have T200 PW & Gap (43 & 48) plus Vokeys (52 & 60) in my bag and I'm OK with the feel factor despite being a combination of forged face and cast.
Do prefer the forged wedges; have played Vokey, Cally, Mizuno, Cleveland & they’re all great. Decided to try the Sub70 forged JB wedges; they’re just as good as the others listed – have back spun all of these into the cup at times, no complaints. Thinking of picking up the full face model of the JBs, as they are also made from carbon steel…
Andy, you seemed to hit the Ping ChipR closer and more consistently – which would you chose ?
These look so good. Hopefully they come out with more grind and bounce options. Sugar daddy 2 have a couple of options in each loft but don’t look as nice in my opinion. And are more than twice the price. I prefer a cleaner look.
They look great! Have last year’s model though, and I think they look pretty good too. No need to upgrade.
Thank you for the review…cheers.
I prefer cast clubs because I cannot afford to replace clubs very often so I choose the more durable manufacturing.
Because of your review of the new 0211 irons I ordered a single 6 iron to try, needless to say, after receiving I ordered the rest. Now you're going to make me order the wedges, your channel is getting expensive, thanks 👍
Takomo Skyforger wedges come in at EUR 90,00 – forged👍🏻
Andy which would you pick between these and the Calloway raw you review the other day? I currently have the Callaway Mack Daddy cavity backs but looking to upgrade. The rest of the bag is PXG but the Raws with the extra bounce options are appealing a bit more
Thanks for all the pxg reviews Andy! Seems like your the only YouTube golfer that’s willing to review them
Forging hardens/toughens Steel.
Will these actually go in the bag or will you stay with the Calloway Jaws you are currently playing???
They appear quite a bit different in looks and in head size.
I've had the 52 and 56 in extreme dark for about 3 weeks now. I love them and look great in my bag.
Hugely underrated golf channel. Great review as always 👍
since feel is such a big deal to people, I have tested many different clubs and I honestly do not see that big a difference. When you hit one in the sweet spot they all feel good. Always play what makes your game the best! Many pros agree with that, the club manufactures have brainwashed people on forging.
Pxg needs a wedge designer for the brand like callaway has Roger cleveland and titleist vokey. They need more extensive bounce and grind options.
If you like forged wedges Andy give Bettinardi wedges a try
For some reason that music hurts my ears.
I have always puzzled why most Wedges weren't Forged using soft Carbon steel, after all, soft forging gives a better feel and wedge play is all about the feel.
In fact, I was so confused by this that I once questioned a well know Wedge brand's Rep as to why their Wedges weren't Forged. His answer was because the grooves of the Wedges would wear too quickly if they were forged, that's why they are instead Cast. That makes sense in one way, but it also doesn't make sense because a Forged Wedge would definitely "FEEL" better!
I have the new sugar daddy wedges in 52 and 60 no need for a 56 as andy pointed out i can do everything with the other clubs
I have had the previous model sugar daddy which were great but the new model
Oh! so buttery smooth never hit a wedge like it before always puts a smile on my face
If the normal ones are even half as soft they will be fantastic
Good review Andy
Thanks
Good video but please lose the annoying lift music
54 and 58 do the same thing 🤷♂️ mmm not sure Andy I presume that's just your personal opinion I carry both and they do different things for me
Go wilson they do forged 👍👍
And wilson are amazing 👏
When I first started watching your videos about PXG I just assumed that you were getting paid by them. Well, I ended up buying a set of 0311 a few weeks ago and I can't believe how great they feel and the increase in distance is quite noticeable. PXG makes a great club. I even love the $229 0211 driver better than the SIM 2 Max I had before. Much more forgiving for sure!
I think the main reason why very few wedges are forged, is because with so much loft, the smash factor is so low and it is very hard to actually tell the difference between a cast or forged one.
I agree having a 54 and 56 makes no sense. I was just not seeing the need to have two wedges when I used a 56 and 60 degree. So I just learned to hit my 56/10 in every scenario. It took a little time, but in the end I think it makes you a better golfer to know how to use wedges or even irons for that matter, using less than a full shot and/or by manipulating the face. The 60 went out and a new chipper went in. That said I am in the market for a new wedge and do like the feel of forged wedges – although I would not consider a PXG since I cannot easily test it..
Great review, love the ‘studio set’ so professional which matches the channel. Clubs look great as did the shots you played 😊
Appreciate the honest review and I would likely check out the PXG wedges. The only issue is taking the time to schedule and fitting and having to pay a fee to test them. I believe that is the biggest issue with any club you may be interested in trying out. There are the big box stores and specialized places like GolfTec but costs to try can be an issue. Also the experience of the fitter is skeptical at places too. I’d prefer testing outdoors at a range but that only happens if local courses have the vendors available on site. That also doesn’t happen much when the patrons are available to attend. I recently purchased a SM8 54 and 58 with proper bounce for the courses I play. I came to realize the I had been using a 56 and 60 but usually only carried the 56 in the bag. Since changing distance has improved and strike. I now keep both in the bag. My only beef is that it would be nice to have an option off the rack to have the same shafts as the irons played in the wedges. I play Dynamic Gold S300 105 now. I reshafted the original JPX800 Pro forged I play that came with S300 125. I’ve considered changing irons but the newer models are so much stronger that I get concerned with potential issues with dispersion i.e. hitting a 7 that has a loft of a 6 iron. My 7 iron has aloft of 33-34 degrees. I really enjoy your videos and the new venue is great.
I have 54 and 58 wedges from PXG and they’re nice. Edison wedges are very similar forged wedges and are worth considering.
Andy’s right, there’s an overlap with 54&58, I rarely use the 58 since I’m hitting chips and dinks with other clubs
I’ve played Forged Miura wedges for a number of years. They do wear out but can easily be refinished. Currently play Mizuno T20 which are also forged. Spent a couple of years with SM7 and while the Vokey give you the grind versatility there is in my view compromise in the cast feel. Off to test the Glide 4.0’s tomorrow as the potential next option looking for a little more forgiveness and maybe some nostalgia with the Eye Grind having grown up with the Ping Eye 2!
