Alright! Let’s do a little Rogers Hornsby analysis! This one goes out to Patrick Goodman who’s been asking for this for a long time. Thanks for you patience, Patrick!

Hornsby is one of the greatest pound for pound hitters to ever do it. And yes, his swing is very front arm dominant. As I say in the video many times, don’t make the mistake of dismissing the swings of these older players from a long time ago. I think a large part of swing instruction as we head into the future will be about going back to the values and the swing mechanics of these guys.

Stay dominant!

  1. If you look at Jack Clark's swing. He would start away from home plate but he would step towards home plate more like diagonal towards 2nd base. I believe this approach helped him from getting jamed on inside pitches

  2. Very enlightening to my evolution. Specially because I’ve become, like everyone else, so consumed with judging progress by analyzing positions. Im now thinking a bit more about how the position is achieved. Like how did u get to extension or arm bar. Did you artificially hyperextend your front arm vs making an aggressive move to the ball with your body simply leaving the hands behind. Or does the bat flatten via relaxation and dropping or do you place it or snap it there. Big difference. Really good stuff

  3. I'd be willing to bet jamie is a "conspiracy theorist"….the way he challenges conventional wisdom. No doubt the old timers were not in the matrix.

  4. Excellent analysis Jamie. Rogers Hornsby does everything you talk about that the greatest P4P hitters tend to do: backswing, FHC,connected position at contact w/ a wide follow through. He definitely goes against conventional teaching and yeah his numbers do not lie especially in his prime. Interesting thing is I read somewhere that he was struggling one year (in the minors or as a rookie I think) and Honus Wagner gave him some tips on his swing/stance and he blossomed from there. ⭐️

  5. Would you consider doing an analysis of Rod Carew? He's definitely a high average, low power guy, but his career was well before Charlie Lau's ideas became popular.

  6. Unfortunately we don’t have a análisis of a swing of Hector Espino he hit close to 800 homeruns and .338 life time average they used to call him the Mexican Bambino,l am sure that he had the swing like Hank Aaron, Mikey Mantle….

  7. I understand Jaime sees a pattern in front humerus compression with the too p4p hitters. Does he have a theory on why this swing is more powerful?

  8. A most signifigant part of his swing (at 18:11) a technique I try to work my 12 and under guys to set it in stone, is look at his eyes at the moment of contact. He's watched the ball out of the pitchers hand and followed it in a pinpoint manner, with their eyes all the way down to the point of contact. The days, even in the MLB, you see a lot of guys starting to look up at where they presume the boll os going to go after they hit it, and they don't hit it or don't hit it squarely.

  9. A couple of things I have noticed that a lot of older say pre 50’s hitters seem to do very different than todays hitters. 1- their feet are quite close together, some even start feet together at times! RUTH comes to mind on that. 2- they start out with hands lower say at the chest . A lot of todays guys are way higher and they tend to wiggle their hands around. Obviously it worked for guys like RUTH, COBB EVEN TED WILLIAMS. I think the older SWINGS for sure have something to offer! Another thing I have noticed on a lot of the great hitters that you have to really watch to see is that hey have a SLIGHT DROP of their hands to cock the swing. You can see that quite easily with WILLIAMS, GEHRIG , COBB and even really noticeably in more modern guys like FRANK ROBINSON , DARRYL STRAWBERRY and very much so in BARRY BONDS. A lot of modern hitters seem to go from a higher position straight into the ball . THANKS.
