The 2023 Ryder Cup is the 44th edition and runs between September 25 – October 1. Zach Johnson is the U.S. Team Captain and Luke Donald is the European Team Captain. The U.S. Team are the reigning champion after winning 19-9 at Whistling Straits in 2021. Every two years, 24 of the best players from Europe and the United States go head-to-head in match play competition. Drama, tension, incredible golf, camaraderie and sportsmanship are served in equal measure, captivating an audience of millions around the world. It’s an event that transcends sport, yet remains true to the spirit of its founder, Samuel Ryder.

    The population of Europe is over twice as much as the US so they should be the favorites every time. But America was doomed before it started by snubbing Glover and Bradley and putting in Thomas and Koepka from the Jupiter clique. Karmic law at work.

    This event is mainly bullshit poked and sculpted into a supposedly monumental media event. It's a bit hard to do, given the fact that both sides have their own tours played on different courses, but a comparison of the 24 players average score for a round of tournament golf would show that #24 in rank has an average of less than one stroke higher than the #1 ranked player.

    Roughly half the strokes are putts. The Americans are used to playing on fast greens. The Europeans are used to playing on slower greens. Americans for years now have pursued power over accuracy off the tee. My guess is that the number of events played at links-style courses in England and Scotland on the European tour, with their pot bunkers, gorse, and knee high fescue rough, have pointed the Europeans in the direction of accuracy over power.

    Play the event in the USA, on lightning fast greens and less punitive rough, and the USA wins. Play the event in Europe with highly punitive rough and slow greens, and Europe wins. The course set up dictates who wins. If the guys are all within one stroke or so in skill, the set up is more than enough to tilt the playing field in favor of the home team.

    So glad the Europeans won the Cup!! I found the European players relatable, respectful, and much more likeable than the American players who come across as Arrogant, disrespectful, and entitled!! When your caddie is taking the time and effort to insult, degrade, and show such disrespect to the opponent, he should never be allowed at RYDER CUP again!! Congrats to Europe, Well Done!!
