The hopes of a whole continent will rest with Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm at the Ryder Cup but don’t be surprised if you don’t see as much of them as expected after Luke Donald says he may have to BENCH them!
European captain says certain demands of undulating Marco Simone means the likes of Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and Viktor Hovland are unlikely to play all five matches.. but why is this, how many times are they likely to play in the ryder cup and what will this mean for team Europe?
Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm are set to lead from the front for Team Europe at this year’s Ryder Cup, but Luke Donald’s two star men may have to spend at least one session on the sidelines. Donald will be banking on McIlroy and Rahm to be his star men at Marco Simone, with the pair ranked second and third in the world rankings respectively. As well as being Europe’s two strongest golfers, the pair also have Ryder Cup experience too, which will prove invaluable in the host’s new-look 12-man team.

Play the whole team the first 2 days. In 2018 we could afford that Fleetwood lost his single to Finau. Will be closer now. Final day is the most important day. All 12 europeans can deliver the first 2 days. Dont exhaust the top players. Keep them fresh to singles🙏🏼
That's asinine. They are going to play at least 4 matches each and probably 5. The European team is strong, but I think this Ryder cup is going to be close, and Europe is probably not strong enough to win with those 2 sitting more than one match.

How disrespectful of Hovland to say these two players are arguably the best two players. Who has been the best the last couple of months? Hovland. Rahm hasnt been on form lately except the last tournament where he came 4th and Hovland 5th, and Rory won in July. Thats the only win since Oct 2022.
Aberg crumbled under pressure last week and played +3 or +4 last round.
Hovland and Aberg played together against Mcilroy and Fleetwood in best ball and won when the trained at the course in Rome. They may play together. They can also speak their own language together and confuse the Americans 😉
The course is grueling, need them rested for singles.

Wait a second. It wasn’t to long ago when the subject of Tiger riding in a cart was ok because walking doesn’t have an impact on the game. Now it seems like pros are saying it does.
One thing I like about this venue is this issue. I like that teams may have to strategically sit top players based on the walk.
I am wondering which top players caddie could most potentially keep their guy from playing all 5?
As Europe captain I’m thinking: how many rounds can I get from my top 4 the first two days (Hovland, rahm, Rory, Fitzpatrick)?
Rahm is still pretty young and fitter than people think but his big frame may benefit from a rest.
Rory is starting to get up there. But he is obviously fit. The whole thing about losing his singles match because of fatigue is a bit of a cop out.
Hovland seems fit and young. I see him playing all 5 unless he does feel a rest is needed or they just don’t need him that much.
Fitzpatrick I want that putter in every match. But he may need to rest one.
As for the Americans:
It’s gonna be which bromances are the hottest. And they will play 3 of the 4 team matches. But I don’t see any American being a huge star and super fit with great recent form which would merit 5 matches.
I could have seen a super in form and in better golf shape Bryson doing it, but that’s not here nor there.
