If I placed the ball off my left foot as you did in the last 2 shots, I would miss the ball or top it badly.
You are great at moving to your left side. That is my problem so I have to keep it in the middle of my stance.
The low point with a hybrid should always be after the ball off the ground. Every pro will teach this
I need the ball even or slightly back of my center, hands slightly forward, to make my hybrids work reliably. i.e. played somewhat like my irons. It sounds good to EXACTLY hit the ball, pick it off clean, but how realistic is it for us amateurs? However, I'll give it a try. I have seen a tip to practice with the ball extremely forward, with irons / wedges and that does help control low point. (Mr Short Game tip).
Our pro instructor says to hit the hybrid like an iron. Although I have seen other videos to hit it like a fairway wood.
Once again GREAT tip Andy! Setup for all the longer clubs, have been my biggest challenge to becoming a better and more consistent ball striker. LOL ! I have definitely shown more consistency over the last several months with all my longer clubs… Including driver as I have improved my ability to place more of my weight during setup, (preset) forward in my stance. This might not solve every swing problem, but my scores have improved! LOL ! It appears Andy, that your swing allows you to transfer your weight Perfectly !
There's more contradicting techniques on hitting a hybrid than any other club. Everyone agrees that it shouldn't be hit on the "up" like a diver, but that's where the similarities end. I've seen several videos instructing to hit a hybrid "down" just like an iron, so much so that you even leave a divot. And I've seen a lot of videos mimicking what you're instructing here, with more of a neutral impact (neither "up" or "down"). I saw a guy absolutely striping a hybrid at the range and asked him, and he says he hits it "down" just like an iron. I'm going to try this more neutral approach and experiment a bit and see how it goes. Thanks for the great video. 🙂
Hybrids off of a mat is easy. On grass is a different story, at least for me. Especially that far up in the stance. Again, only per my attempts.
I have mobility issues and an artificial hip. I am always confused by the instruction to flare out the leading foot. This further restricts my motion. However, pointing the front foot inwards increases my range of backswing. It is sort of like lifting the front heel off the ground in the backswing.
I find opening the club face slightly for hybrid helps a lot as they are often heavily draw biased.
Ball position is so important. When I get it wrong, things go wrong. When I get it right, it feels so good. Swing fundamentals are critical but ball position can change the game. I’ll try working on this with my hybrid and maybe 5 wood 🙂
Thanks for the tip Andy. I saw your video then went straight to the range. I really struggle with the hybrid club. I actually got something out of it. Ball and club address position , slight alterations and yes some boomers, obviously not all. Something to work with I feel.
Second time out on the course today with hybrid it was the sweetest club in the bag so versatile like having 3 clubs in one putting was so much better with knew putter .lob wedge was a riot went back to pitching wedge .driver so so 😢
Wow. This 10 minute video could have been cut down to 2. Just make sure your sternum is as close to being directly over the ball at contact …err on the "ever so slightly behind the ball" contact position. Done. As far as: Not liking, or hitting hybrids well, this will more than likely fix that. I, personally, like lots of other folks, struggled with the "hooking & going left" (as a "righty") until I finally hit the Apex 21 standard hybrid. I now how 4 of them in my bag: 3 – 6. I'd just as soon approach a green (now) with my 5 hybrid as I had an 8 iron. (7 is my least lofted iron). Apex 21 standard hybrid …contact at center of chest/sternum…money!
your last point was apropos. I don’t like my hybrids because I can’t hit them. Correction: I can hit them, just not straight. Well, another correction: they are straight but not at target. I’ve got the distance but it’s a pure block. Not a fade, nor a slice – it starts right and is dead straight stays right. i’ve tried a lot of different things modifications including, changing my set up position, changing my grip, and even aiming more left than normal – like REALLY left. Nothing has worked. I’ll give these tips a try and see if that helps. I’d really love to use them because I get a good distance from them, just not in the direction I want.
