USA Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson and 12 members of his squad are spending a few days in Rome to scout out the Marco Simone Golf Club, the venue for this year’s Ryder Cup which starts on 29th September.
It is a chance to experiment with possible pairings that could play a role in Team USA retaining the Cup and winning on foreign soil for the first time in 30 years.
Johnson announced at the end of August that Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas were among his six Captain’s Picks, leading some commentators to accuse Johnson of picking friendship over other considerations.
While Koepka’s status as a LIV Golf League captain makes him a controversial choice, Thomas has endured a poor season, posting just three top-10 finishes in 20 PGA Tour starts.
Johnson defended both players, calling Thomas “pretty awesome” and insisting that Koepka is well liked by his Ryder Cup team-mates.
“The only thing that was said about Brooks with the guys, specifically the top six that made the team on their own merit was, we want Brooks Koepka to play for Team USA,” he said.

Both love to show off their skills and love the pressure both have proven records in golf……case closed!!!!!
Koepka doesn't need defended. JT is another story. Nothing more than a "bro" pick.
There's a difference between Brooks and Justin Thomas and that is Justin Thomas has a very good record and write a cup while Brooks has a bad record that's why it would not have put Brooks on the team
