Say goodbye to the home of professional wrestling and hello to the house that Sports Entertainment built.

The Bloodline sports entertained during their instantly classic Tribal Court segment on SmackDown for close to an hour. SmackDown went well over 40 minutes before it even had a single match and the segment peaked at 3 million viewers and made history as the No. 1 English-language broadcast on network TV. That’s never happened in the history of the wrestling business and it didn’t require a single wrestling hold.

Right on cue, AEW is trying to build its own epic storyline outside of the ring as they’ve gone all in on non-wrestling segments between MJF and Adam Cole. The Cole-MJF bromance is the type of sports entertainment that will grow AEW’s audience in ways that a Tiger Driver 91 will not. AEW is not going to compete with these Bloodline numbers no way, but it’s definitely not going to be competitive by wrestling dangerous pseudo shoot matches and putting all the emphasis on two grown men rolling around in baby oil for the approval of a 63-year-old man. That’s why that audience has plateaued.

When it came time to wrestling, Cole and MJF spit in the face in the concept of a five-star match, whatever that means. They didn’t do a long-drawn out New Japan main event match where you’re asleep by the time they start dropping each other on their necks. They didn’t do a technical wrestling catch-as-catch-can grappling exhibition. They did basic 1980’s WWF. Building to a hot tag. Building to a bodyslam. they’re still building to that double clothesline, and it will get a bigger reaction than a dangerous Tiger Driver ever will.
AEW is still learning how to tell stories, and no AEW storyline is perfect. My man @MeltzerSaidWhat smartened me up and talked about a flaw in this storyline.

“One thing that I just realized is that nobody is currently chasing the World heavyweight title. I know people would say that the Cole and MJF stuff is building to that, but in kayfabe, they’re friends ATM and not one person on the roster is pursuing or trying to win MJFs title.”

Bingo. AEW needs to be building up challengers for MJF, and really creating their own universe for this storyline the way WWE is doing with the Bloodline. When Sami Zayn and Roman Reigns were frenemies of sorts, WWE still built up Kevin Owens and Logan Paul as challengers before Sami finally snapped and challenged Roman. They didn’t just have their audience assume that eventually Sami will challenge Roman, so it’s cool if nobody else does. As long as MJF and Adam Cole are buddies, AEW is essentially shelving its entire world heavyweight title division for the tag team titles. As long as MJF pals around with Adam Cole he gets immunity from defending his title? Do none of these niggas want that belt?

  1. Something tells me WWE stumbled their way into the Bloodline story, judging by how they've botched literally every other attempt at storytelling and RAW is still nothing but endless wrestling matches despite it being an hour longer than Smackdown

  2. I am not the biggest JD fan but he does have more followers than you, So it's starting to look like your clout chasing off him.

  3. Comparing the great bloodline story to the goofy stupid friend shit aew is doing is disrespectfully shit not even close. Rmr when AEW said it was sports base wrestling ?🤣🤣 and MJF has already done this storyline with other wrestling shit is stale

  4. I was talking to a friend who is a super casual fan, and they told me on the Tuesday that they’re waiting for Roman’s reaction to Tribal Court. Everyone loves a good story. Sports entertainment brings people in.

  5. That Tiger Driver complaint is going to be milked like a rattlesnake's fangs by a snake charmer dating a masochist with a biting fetish lol.

  6. The marks don't wanna see Sports Entertainment… OH WELL when you on TV… You better have entertainment. Doing just wrestling matches not gonna work.

  7. That no challengers thing isnt particularly ture… Max faced Tanahashi 2 weeks ago and a number 1 contender will arise literally next week

  8. Attitude Era was all about entertainment. Segments. Because a lot of the matches were not classic. They were in to Vince vs Austin segments. They remembered HHH drugged Stephanie to marry her. HHH ANGLE STEPHANIE TRIANGLE LOVE STORY, WHO RAN OVER STONE COLD, HHH VS HBK, ELVOTION. It wasnt the MITB 2011 Cena vs Punk match that made ppl tune in. It was CM Punk sports entertainment promo. The story of his contract.

  9. Great take!! I couldn’t agree more. Greatest match of all time is rock/hogan and it was because of the build up and who they were. Not because of the stupid flippy moves that everyone forgets about a week later.

  10. Twitter bound dork and pathetic podcaster: the very definition of alfred

  11. aew dark has more views than this channel, and it’s not on the air anymore
    Pathetic

  12. Yeah the problem with AEW is it doesn't have a genuinely good storyline since Jon's early runs(especially his feud with Kingston) and CM punks rivalry.

  13. More than MJF and Adam Cole angle, I'd definitely tune in with CM Punk vs Elite angle if Tony Khan have the balls to capitalize it into a real shoot angle.
