In this video I’m shooting a .308 Win bolt action with a 16″ barrel out to 1000 yards. Can I accurately shoot that far with a 16″ barrel? Tune in to find out!
Best results will come from shooting M118LR from a 24 inch barrel for about 2610 fps which will deliver a 175 grain SMK to 1000 yards with an MOA wind constant of about 11. It’s this good wind constant, which is better than what the 168 grain bullet can deliver, that assures better accuracy since it helps shooters produce good hits in winds that are hard to discern by their velocity and direction.
I only have one arm so I cut my .308 barrel down to 19". I have a Leupold 2-7 with compensation dots. With a bipod, I can shoot at 500yds all day. Thats as far as I can shoot with that scope. My point being, anyone can try long range target shooting. It will boost your confidence and give you a better feel of the terrain.👍👍👍Great vid.
That impact second mag at 1090, was that still holding high on the target with a hold over? And did you adjust down from the original hold that were hitting eye. I was just wondering for those two mags at 1090. Were you using the same hold target point. Or were you having different holds?
To make this a valid shoot, you needed to measure and compare this with another barrel length of the same construction in the same stock. Simple hits versus no hit is non-impirical. Then you would measure and comparable data. All you have at the moment is "Yes, and" or "So what"
I have a Ruger 556 ranch rifle. It has a 16 inch barrel. In your mind, what would be the most significant improvement? Inaccuracy over a stock rifle? Would it be adding a new trigger? Would it be a more specialized scope? What would be your first upgrade and what would be your second?
The 168 SMK/OTMs have always been my go to for a long time. Recently I started tinkering with the 175 SMK/OTMs and been really liking them for the higher BCs when shooting them out of my cross.
Great video mate. I'm from Australia and own the .308 and .300win mag. The property I hunt on is over 300.000 acres some get to over a million. At the moment I'm good to 700m.. keep up the good work
Try some Lapua 155 gr scenar factory ammo, should make a difference. Higher BC than the 168 gr and higher muzzle vel. too. I shoot a 21” Rock Creek 5R 308 and this seems to be a good combination…
Serious question, I grew up shooting at a young age. My grandfather was a recon Marine that Flew the AD Skyraider during his time in the service. I grew up loving shooting in general. Shot my first deer with a 30-30 at age 4, a day before Christmas. Will never forget that. Served in the army did a tour in Iraq back in 04-to just shy of 06. Bit of history out of the way My question is what is everyones infatuation with getting a suppressor. After my Dad passed away I pretty much stopped all shooting… It took me years to get back into shooting and when he passed suppressors where just starting to be a thing in the civilian realm. Anyway I'm now hitting the range's on the weekends and hoping to find a decent hunting club within the next year or so. More and more I'm seeing everyone with suppressor's at the ranges and on youtube. Genuinely curious as to why everyone is getting them put on various weapons.
Anyway cool content love the ole 308 round, not gonna lie thats a funny looking rifle with that short barrel. Subbed and liked keep it comin brother.
Boom! that was very nice! I'm looking into this rifle for purchase, only have 200 yards to shoot at the range and this rifle is well under 1,000, so thanks for the video man is a keeper for me.
I have to throw a flag on your FPS of about 2630, I run a an 18" and shoot 168 Fed. SMK and I average 2495. Are you running your own hand loads or factory?
With a range finder, 200 fps doesnt matter. I bought a Marlin XS7 in .308 and cut the barrel down to 18 with a hacksaw. My buddy put it on his lathe and put an target crown on it. I can regularly shoot 10" groups at 500 yards with a 7 power Leupold 🤣🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍
I shot 308 specialty pistol Remington XP 100 (16" barrel) at 2022 WYSHOT and ended up second. I even managed to get 1290 hit from the first try but I agree that up to 900 it was much easier than beyond 900.
Came to see if I could learn for my own 16" setup, but you're managing nearly 200fps more than me! I'm only getting 2452 with 168gr FGMM, guess it's time to start working up some spicier handloads.
Excellent video. Very practical examples. As a 20 year ('78-'98) Marine vet that competed in inter service competition with a government match grade M14 (22" barrel), and a government provided 3-9×12 Unertl scope, 1000 yards was something we did regularly. Even further from time to time. And that's with a semi-auto rifle. And we were always told, "It's not the rifle. It's not the ammo. It's the shooter behind the weapon. That's what determines success." I personally have no problem blaming the weapon, ammo, or anything else besides me. I've also hunted my whole life with several different bolt action 308's and 30-06's. It wasn't until about 5 years ago that I bought my first 16" bolt action. I enjoy hunting deer and elk with it. But I've never tried to shoot it at 1000 yards. I have it zeroed at 200 yards. My longest shot was a bull elk 2 winters ago at about 500 yards prone. I was happy to get the kill. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

I love to be consistent at 600 yards.
How's that Dead Air Muzzle Break as far as recoil. Is it loud?
Would it shoot better if you went to heavier bullet say a 180 vld or something with much higher bc?

Of course it can hit it. A Scar17 gets to 1200yds no problem.
Looks like Cow Town Range.
Nice video and informative

You really need at least a 175gn or heavier to insure stability at a 1000 yards.
🇦🇺😎👍

Great shooting sir!

Was that your first experience with Mr. T?
Why not just use a 30-30 the velocity can't be to much less than a stub. lmao.
repeat your test on a calm day….
Helluva paint job. I can barely see it in the intro

Clint smith proved this15 years ago
Thanks for sharing.
Would love to see this with a 13.7 inch barrel next.
You mentioned that rifle is awaiting a suppressor. I'd be interssted in seeing what effect that has on accuracy with that additional muzzle velocity.
Speed kills. Great video
It depends if the load matches the barrel whip ( Ladder test)
I love that you mentioned the transonic barrier. People don’t take the max supersonic range of cartridges into account enough.
I will take my 22" barrel.
What twist is the rifling
Impressive work
IMPAAACT!

What top rail are you using on the rifle forend, and what are you planning to mount to it

always a fan of shorter barrels and never anything near 20", unless I want to hit consistently over 1000+ yards
Kein Interesse an gesperrten Kanälen mit Kriegsmüll 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎😡😡😡😡😡😡😡
my rifle is, but i am not
can i get your DOPE sheet from 100-1000?
F me , I just spent 11min and 30secs watching buddy miss every single shot. If I wanted to watch so many misses I woulda just went out there myself.
RESPECT
What power is your optic? I may have missed it in the video.

Use a 16” .308 for shooting deer. Nothing like this range but nice to know if I wanna push it far.
