In this Mets post game news conference, Justin Verlander called his five-inning, 100 pitch performance on Monday night, “a bit of a grind.” He talked about changing his mechanics by “lowering my arm slot a bit, thought my stuff was better as my mechanics set in.” Verlander felt he had lost some of his deception on the mound and a change was necessary. He was “caught off guard” by a pitch clock violation prior to the third inning. The veteran righthander said of the team’s rough stretch, “Don’t think anyone saw this coming, disappointing for us and the fans.”

  1. Verlander has been consistently underwhelming the entire season. $40M + for a 5 inning pitcher. Truly pathetic!!

  2. This is so brutal. I thought we would get a lot more out of Verlander this year. Look back at the start, IL, can’t score when he pitches and if we do he implodes.

  3. This season is kaput. No more big contracts for over the hillers. Trade for or develop younger pitchers who can go at least 7 innings for a whole season regardless of ERA. 5 & 6 innings starters are useless when you have to bring in 3 or 4 trash can relievers who give away the game. The prevailing idea of saving starters arms by pitching them less innings is complete nonsense and doesn't prevent injuries.

  4. Too much over thinking! Just go out there not worrying about winning or losing. Have fun! Things will click when you have fun because the talent is there!

  5. He’s laughing knowing what he’s saying is crazy. Mets have the highest payroll in the history of sports…. This is brutal if you’re a paying Mets fan.

  6. And tbh….this is the polarizing philosophy in baseball. Do you bank on older players getting paid base on what they did in prior years….or do you bank on up and coming prospects from a well fed minor league system like the Braves, orioles and Rays. Just sayin….invest in youth

  7. Been a Mets fan since 1988, at 7 years old. Last year was the exception. This year seems familiar. Not a fan of this "buy the win" style of team management.

  8. Bottom Line, the life on his fastball from last season to now is starkly different. I don't know if it's because he's one more year removed from TJ Surgery or innings from last year have caught up to him but hes not the same pitcher who won the Cy Young last season.
