Addressing the question of trans-women in women's snooker is not as simple as it is being made out to be below. For the record, I don't believe that trans-women have any place whatsoever in sports such as swimming, athletics, basketball, football, etc. That said, I don't think snooker falls within the same category as these other sports, where physical prowess is an obvious advantage. Many would argue that men are simply better at snooker than women. After all, there are no women in the top 64. They might argue that this is the very reason why women's tournaments exist in the first place. In this interpretation of the issue, trans-women are encroaching on women's sport. This, however, is not necessarily the case.
When you consider that there are far more men involved in snooker than there are women, it only makes sense that men would dominate the sport. The larger the pool of players, the more likely you are to find players of a higher calibre. In this interpretation of the issue, the role of women's tournaments is not to give weaker players a chance to play at their own level, as is the case with juniors, but to attract more women to a traditionally male sport. When viewed from this perspective, Jamie Hunter is not only free to participate in women's snooker, but is an asset to it. After all, her participation is likely to inspire other women and trans-women to take up this great sport.
In short, unless you can actually prove that men are inherently better at snooker than women, that male success is not simply due to a vastly larger player base, not only is there no good reason to exclude trans-women from women's snooker, but it's very possible that their inclusion is an asset to the sport and to women's snooker in general.
Very Good Mink
