September 27th, 2008. Seasoned 15 year veterans “Sugar” Shane Mosley & Ricardo Mayorga aka “El Matador” collided in a bid for the vacant WBA Inter-Continental Light Middleweight Championship.

Both fighters debuted back in 1993 and had a combined total of 26 world title fights at this juncture.

Prefight records; Mosley 44(37)-5, Mayorga 28(22)-6-1.

Entering the bout, the 37 year old Mosley who won world titles at Lightweight, Welterweight & Light Middleweight had notable triumphs over Adrian Stone, Antonio Diaz, Golden Johnson, Wilfredo Rivera, Luis Collazo, Jesse James Leija, John John Molina, Phillip Holiday, Oscar De La Hoya & Fernando Vargas (2x).

On the other hand, the 35 year old Mayorga who held world titles at Welterweight & Light Middleweight had defeated top oppositions such as Andrew Lewis, Fernando Vargas, Michele Piccirillo & Vernon Forrest (2x).

Overall, It was a good fight with Mayorga having the upper hand in the early goings with his unorthodox style which troubled Mosley, who made adjustments in the middle rounds to gradually and eventually break down the rugged Nicaraguan en route to winning the WBA Inter-Continental Light Middleweight Title with his 50th career victory.

From rounds 1 to 3, Mayorga effectively connected with looping right hands by constantly baiting Mosley into his traps.

In round 4, Mosley began to gain momentum and landed a hard overhand right that shook Mayorga.

In round 6, Mosley connected with numerous clean shots on Mayorga who took them well with his seemingly unbreakable chin as he appeared to be unshaken.

Between rounds 7 to 10, Mosley continued to beat Mayorga to the punch in most exchanges although he was occasionally tagged in return.

In round 11, Mosley landed a gargantuan right hook that splattered blood out of Mayorga’s mouth.

In round 12, Mosley knocked Mayorga off his feet with a fusillade of power punches with less than 20 seconds to go but the Granada born warrior was somehow able beat the count in a tremendous display of bravery. However, Sugar Shane ensured the fight would not make it to the scorecards with a picture-perfect left hook to secure the sweet sweep in dramatic fashion as referee David Mendoza waved off the bout with literally 1 second before the final bell.

By CompuBox Stats, the finishing left hook was the 99th power punch connected by Shane Mosley.
