Aimee Sawyer, the current Mendip Golf Club Ladies Captain, has recently overcome significant adversity to defy the odds and become 2023 Somerset Ladies champion. Golfing friend Hannah Woodley called her an “inspiration to all”.
Just under three years ago, Aimee was fighting for her life after a freak, fire-related accident left her in a coma for five weeks with 58.5% body burns.
Despite doctors telling her she would never play golf again, Aimee instead used the game to help her rehabilitation, motivated by the county championship being at her home club.
Head pro at Mendip Golf Club, Stuart Disney, has played a big role in helping Aimee to reconstruct her swing and improve accuracy, taking account of the resulting physical restrictions of her accident.
Her journey has included numerous operations, with more to come. Defying the odds stacked against her, Aimee’s victory meant so much more than many people could ever imagine.
