Nick Faldo may have never had a more animated reaction to a golf shot than he did at the 2014 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship while following Rory McIlroy’s golf troubles.
In the first round of the tournament, Rory drove his tee shot on the 15th hole into the desert and his @nike golf ball came to rest next to a rock. Instead of taking a penalty shot to obtain relief, Rory decided to take a swipe at the ball instead. What ensued was not pleasant, not only did Rory’s ball ricochet into a gulley further off the course but the commotion caused a golf tournament fan to fall into a patch of cholla cactus – the famous golf announcer phrase “the attack of the jumping chollas” by Rich Lerner was born. 🌵
Number 1 seed Rory McIlroy was playing number 16 Boo Weekley, while Rory conceded the 15th hole due to his cholla trouble, Rory went on to win the match 3&2, but was subsequently knocked out in the next round when he played number 9 seed Harris English, losing on the 19th hole.
