You Kaiwen, aka Kevin Yu, is quickly becoming one of my favorite mma fighters due to his excellent foundation of Judo that he’s trained longer than any other art he picked up along the way. In this amazing hybrid MMA rules match, he takes on a standard mma guy and uses throws in his amazing skillset to achieve an advantage. Let’s watch this amazing KOD Championship match and see how Kevin Yu takes down Bernard Fung. Shoutout Victor and the rest of the people behind 笼中之王.

Good judo can change a lot in a match
I thought i had vertigo years ago and it turned out to be a deep inner ear infection.
I don't want to get too deep into this matter, but Austronesians in Taiwan have all "Chinese" blood from mainland China -> see haplogroups. Pacific islanders' admixture, like the Rock's, is from more ancient Austronesian migrations. Also, Austronesians are most likely from South China.
it's not only his judo, the dude is a great boxer, also has amazing stamina and speed
Judo is highly under rated much like alot of the Japanese martial arts. Personally i think its due to the tournament scene and the fact that these arts are consistently pressure tested against resistant opponents.
There is a treatment called the epley maneuver. This helps rebalance the fluid in your inner ear.
Judo black belt here! (yeah, I'm back to commenting, I hit the comment button harder than this guy hit the floor)
Here you have a breakdown of the techniques used, with videos and Japanese names!
00:40 Here he was thinking about an o uchi gari (inner reap) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0itJFhV9pDQ&t=9s&ab_channel=KODOKAN or a ko uchi gari (inner sweep) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Jb3tZvr9Ng&t=2s&ab_channel=KODOKAN.
1:20 1:30 3:14 (recap) Ura nage (or suplex) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fgi9b8DJ5sQ&ab_channel=KODOKAN
2:30 Seoi otoshi (dropping shoulder throw) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vu1TMVNnq34&t=2s&ab_channel=KODOKAN Here it was not a good idea, he gave his back and was almost choked. These throws work when you can properly slam your opponent, not when you're just gently rolling. Don't try this with a bjj guy, you'd get destroyed.
3:47 Counter to kick with grab and sweep. That sweep is a ko soto gari (small outer reap) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeQ541ScLB4&ab_channel=KODOKAN Not flashy, but effective. It could also be (arguably) a de ashi harai (foot sweep) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BUUvqxi_Kk&ab_channel=KODOKAN
5:08 as the commentator says, it was a perfect ko uchi gari (inner sweep) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Jb3tZvr9Ng&t=2s&ab_channel=KODOKAN. This is not flashy, but it's effective enough to continue striking or just to go for a submission. Here the timing was just perfect.
5:49 Kuchiki taoshi, (inner single leg) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNL47q1aJNY&t=7s&ab_channel=KODOKAN
7:43 TKO by PUUUUNCH! (I donk know the Japanese name for punch. Update: it's Mawashi-zuki (round punch) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvbH_yU0HEc&ab_channel=JuJitsu Karate brothers, if I messed up the name feel free to bash me!
In a real fight, only a couple of these throws would've hurt enough to stop the fight, specially one of those suplexes and the sweep countering the kick. Those in pavement finish the fight instantly, many people don't realise how concrete can get you completely stunned, which allows your opponent to destroy you just by punching your face (or kicking it in)
MMA needs a strong grappling base, from what i've seen the best combination is Judo+BJJ. This MMA guy will get destroyed if he doesn't learn more than striking. IMO he didn't look like a MMA guy, they usually have a grappling base (or grappling knowledge).
Kevin is completely right, in order for you to actually master a throw you need to know many different ways to do it, for example with different grips (normal grip, crossed grip, no gi) and in different positions. It's not just about knowing how to do it statically! I really like this guy, he knows his stuff!
PS: COMMENTATOR GUY, I'M SORRY YOU HAVE VERTIGO! THAT'S ROUGH, BUT YOU'VE GOT THIS!
can you interview the ring girl? stay healthy.
1st throw suplex= ura nage. 2nd ura nage. 3rd ippon seio nage. 4th maybe kuchiki taoshi to kouchi gari. 5th ippon ouchi gari the one you though was beautiful. 6th kuchiki taoshi. Could be wrong and could have missed some but I think that's it. I'm just starting out in Judo
3:48 Kevin sweeps with the same side leg as the arm he's holding the caught kick with. Muay Thai guys usually do it with the opposing leg, but this way lets you do a strong inside kick, I think it's better than just tripping the guy from the outside of the leg.
i love that Maki-komi arm drag and iponsiao-nage feint into ashiwaza foot sweep. i love the content keep it up ❤
Vertigo: Did you have a ear infection recently?
If anything, Judo will give you traps of steel. Aside from originally hold his hands a little high and close to the face (so you end up looking through them… and having the opponent just push or lightly tap your hands into your eyes), Judo guy had great skills. His opponent looked like he could hit you from the other side of the ring with that reach. He must have gotten a bit hesitant after being thrown so much early in the match — ouch.
Ngl im thinking about pausing the video in order to search "aboriginal Taiwanese"… I've never heard that before
1. I hope you heal fast and respectfully Jerry! Hang in bud!
2. This fight was ✨sensational✨
it’s amazing how being highly competent at grappling (either standup or ground) gets inside the head of the opponent and becomes a huge asset to your striking
Get well soon dude! I love all of your videos, your commentary is in-depth but also accesible to someone who isn’t super deep into martial arts
I seen a lot of judo practitioner mixed it with boxing and kickboxing and it is very effective that way. And watching this video this judo practitioner mixed with Sanda looks very effective. This is a great fight thought, enjoy every moment it. Awesome 👍. I hope you get well Jerry, my prayers is for you bro 🙏. Stay healthy.
Judo is a great grappling art. No doubt about that.
Good luck with your health Jerry. I hope you come good soon.
Am physical therapist in california, depending on the type of vertigo, normally this is diagnosied through the dix hall pike and then treated with the epley manuver. That is if it is primarily affected by movement such as turning in bed, however if its more constant it can be caused by many other things all mostly affecting the inner ear.
Linear fighting; no angular movement.
