These spike shoes are more of a soil conditioner rather than for aerating. Pulling the soil plugs out of the ground is better, but these shoes can still do an aeration on a smaller scale.
They can also be helpful in figuring out lawn problems. An example is when there is big rocks buried. I had a client ask me if I could figure out a troubled area on his lawn. He had tried fungicides and insecticides from past recommendations and had no luck. It required more water than the rest of his lawn. It looked like he had a history of problems on just this part of the lawn. And with these shoes I found buried pieces of concrete. This was a newly built house. It looked like the landscapers just threw a layer of compost and rolls of sod on top. He was happy, and I was happy to find the problem.
