The Chicago White Sox walked off their sweep of the Detroit Tigers on a Jake Burger grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The first three innings passed quickly, both teams holding the other scoreless. The Tigers jumped on the board first with a 2-run homer in the top of the fourth inning.
Starting pitcher Michael Kopech continued his streak of masterful pitching, throwing 9 strikeouts over 7.0 innings pitched, only giving up one walk. He held the Tigers to two earned runs in his time on the bump.
Eloy Jiménez cut the Tigers lead in half with an RBI single sent to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The White Sox tied the score in the bottom of the sixth inning when Yasmani Grandal drove a ball into left field sending in the tying run.
Relief pitcher Joe Kelly threw a scoreless inning and handed the reins over to Liam Hendriks for the top of the ninth inning. Hendriks threw 2 strikeouts over 1.0 innings pitched. Hendriks earned his first win of the year on National Cancer Survivors Day.
With a tie heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Good Guys went for the sweep. Pinch-hitting for Clint Frazier, Andrew Benintendi hit a single to open the inning. Yoán Moncada, pinch-hitting for Elvis Andrus, drew a walk as did Tim Anderson.
With the bases loaded, Jake Burger came to the plate ready to secure a White Sox win. He hit a grand slam into left center field. Jake Burger hit his first career grand slam, first career game-ending home run and second career walk-off RBI.
The hit marks the first walk-off grand slam by a White Sox since José Abreu on 4/25/14 Tampa Bay.
The Chicago White Sox defeat the Detroit Tigers, 6-2, on Sunday, June 4, 2023, at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, IL.

u can put in on the boarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrd eeeeeeeeyes
burger went 1-4 and tht 1 mattered the most 🙂
It was a tense, exciting game. I'm glad for a Sox sweep of any team. There is one complaint though.
In the 6th inning, Torkelson had a hard time fielding a ground ball off Tim Anderson's bat. Still Anderson was out easily as he did not run hard to first. Had he run hard, I am not so sure Anderson would have beaten the throw, but it sure would have been close. What's with Tim anyway? I hear he is unhappy in Chicago.

B/t Eddie Rosario walking it off w/ a granny out in the desert for my Bravos and this guy slugging his 1st career grand slam in such a fashion, I'd say it was a special and unique day in MLB history 🔥🔥 In related news, congrats to the SouthSiders and their loyal fans, they seem to be turning a corner in a very winnable division. Happy hunting, Pale Hose! 🍻
