The 2022 U.S. Open champion is not thrilled with the crowds—or lack thereof—at the Los Angeles Country Club.

Xander Schauffele’s U.S. Open bunker travesty has fans chanting ‘one of us’
Schauffele made history with Rickie Fowler on Thursday after shooting a 62. That set the record for the single lowest-round score in U.S. Open history. It also tied Branden Grace for the lowest round at any major, who accomplished the feat in Royal Birkdale at the 2017 Open Championship.

To win his first major championship, Fowler will have to hold off a loaded leaderboard that includes four-time major champion Rory McIlroy (8 under), Olympic gold medalist Xander Schauffele (8 under), Harris English (7 under) and reigning LIV Golf League individual champion Dustin Johnson (6 under). World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler is 5 strokes back, and reigning Open Championship winner Cameron Smith trails by 6.

Carding 18 birdies through two rounds, Fowler finds himself one clear of his closest competitor, Wyndham Clark. McIlroy and Xander Schauffele both sit at 8 under with Harris English rounding out top five at 7 under. Of the bunch, only McIlroy can call himself a major champion, though he is in the midst of a nine-year drought. Everyone else is pining to win their first at what has been a two-faced Los Angeles Country Club through the first two rounds.

Reigning U.S. Open champ Matt Fitzpatrick’s savage diss of USGA amid lackluster crowds
“Very poor. It’s disappointing on the USGA side,” Fitzpatrick said to Dan Rapoport of Barstool Sports. “They want a great tournament—from what I’ve heard, a lot of members bought tickets, and that’s why there’s so many less people. Hopefully, it’s not the same for other U.S. Opens going forward.”

Wyndham Clark using mother’s memory to fuel strong run at US Open
“I was walking down [a fairway] and I kind of was just smiling as I was playing well, and I go, ‘Man, I wish you could be here, mom, because it’s a dream come true to be doing this at the highest level in front of friends and family that are out here,’ ’’ Clark said. “Yeah, I wish she could be here. But I know she’s proud of me, and she’s made a huge impact on my life. I am who I am today because of her. She was kind of my rock and my always-there supporter.
