To win his first major championship, Fowler will have to hold off a loaded leaderboard that includes four-time major champion Rory McIlroy (8 under), Olympic gold medalist Xander Schauffele (8 under), Harris English (7 under) and reigning LIV Golf League individual champion Dustin Johnson (6 under). World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler is 5 strokes back, and reigning Open Championship winner Cameron Smith trails by 6.

Carding 18 birdies through two rounds, Fowler finds himself one clear of his closest competitor, Wyndham Clark. Of the bunch, only McIlroy can call himself a major champion, though he is in the midst of a nine-year drought. Everyone else is pining to win their first at what has been a two-faced Los Angeles Country Club through the first two rounds.

“Very poor. It’s disappointing on the USGA side,” Fitzpatrick said to Dan Rapoport of Barstool Sports. “They want a great tournament—from what I’ve heard, a lot of members bought tickets, and that’s why there’s so many less people. Hopefully, it’s not the same for other U.S. Opens going forward.”

But I know she’s proud of me, and she’s made a huge impact on my life. I am who I am today because of her. She was kind of my rock and my always-there supporter.
