Those that are more hardcore boxing historians KNOW that this is probably the only guy with the resume to challenge Sugar Ray Robinson for greatest of all time. I'd still go with Sugar but Greb is at the very least top3 all time across all divisions. Dude was a beast and fought so much he deserves way more recognition than he gets.
It's s shame he wasn't called Puncho Villa
Another excellent exercise Rummy. Quality work. Salute to the panel. Bless up 👊
You working today I see Rummy. Two vids in less then 10hr is something I've never known you to do.
fascinating stuff Rummy, my education continues! Really loving this series.
A wonderful series but I must say Dempsey is far too low! He really needed to be either one or two!
Gene tynney is where the Linial title ended.
If I was ever chosen to help make a boxing list, I’d use Rummy’s Corner as a reference lol.
I think that Jack Dempsey should be much higher on the list. He was one of the biggest stars in the 20s. He was right up their with Babe Ruth as far as popularity.
Great list. Love the breakdown and explanations of why certain people made multiple lists and those who almost made the cut.
Wow congratulations m8 your channel has grown like no other boxing YouTube channel!
119 fights in 13 years wow.
A very solid list. I have to say that I’m really pleased to find Tommy Loughran at a place I feel deserves! In the boxing circles where I’ve spent time, I’ve always felt he was underappreciated, probably because of his mixed results at heavyweight… Glad to see him here! His fight with Leo Lomski is one of my favourites!!
Great stuff, Rummy. Did you forget to mention that Greb fought numerous fights while blind in one eye? Also he demolished Tunney in their first meeting, and many who were at the fights thought he won two subsequent bouts vs Tunney as well. FrankinDallas.
The lack of film, particularly of Greb, is vexing.
How is Dempsey not number 1? Never heard of half these guys.
1.Dempsey 2. Wills 3. Tunney 4. Greb 5. Sharkey. That’d be how mine start. Dempsey was like as popular as Babe Ruth back than. Number 6 is kinda lowballing, but he shoulda fought Wills.
Glad to see Tommy Loughran get his due with a Top 5. There's some footage of him on You Tube, where his talent is on full display.
Numbers 1 & 2 go to Harry Greb & Gene Tunney. There's precious little footage of Greb available on You Tube, but Tunney appears in several notable fights.
Greb seems to be best known as a brawler, & yet he's ranked P4P No1 of his era. All I can say to that is, he must have had outstanding ability to be consistently ranked at the top.
Greb did fight the No 2, Tunney, 5 times (!) with Tunney getting the better of Greb 3 – 1 – 1. Though many observers thought Greb should have got the decision in their 2nd encounter.
Interestingly, there's a little story out there about their last fight, where Greb simply wasn't up to the task that night, & he asked Tunney to carry him until the end of the final round so that he he wouldn't get knocked out by Tunney, & Tunney sportingly agreed. Not sure if the story is true or not, but you can make up your own mind by going to Google to read an article, called -: "Blood, Sweat, Toil but No Tears from Tunney – Sports Illustrated Vault" – you'll find it towards the end of that article.
But all in all, the Top 10 is a great list.
Pancho Villa was never knocked out, which is quite an accomplishment when you consider he was only 5' 1". But Villa knew how to fight short. He had many big wins, but he is probably best known for winning the flyweight title after stopping Jimmy Wilde, sending him into permanent retirement after 7 one-sided rounds.
Villa's career was sadly cut short when he was still in his mid-20s – he died from an infection caused by rotting teeth.
Dempsey should be top 5. Tommy Robbins on this list??? I think it should of gone to flowers.
1 Greb
2 Tunney
3 Leonard
4 Dempsey
5 Walker
6 Willis
7 Loughran
8 Villa
9 McLaren
10 Flowers
Harry Greb looks exactly like Nick Diaz
Dempsey was 10x bigger star than any of the guys ranked here above him. People tend to look at the records and forget the context.
🎯💪🔥🥊👍
You should do a video on Greb, Rummy! I know you'd represent him fairly.
Lol Harry greb is not better than gene Tunney. The fighting marine beat him 3 times.
Great stuff rummy. I have been a big fan of yours on boxing forum 24 for many years. Glad you are keeping boxing history alive. Greb was indeed a freak; i hope we find more footage of him one day.
Didn't know Pancho Villa was that good.
The 20s had some of the best fighters ever. ❤
Dang, no Tiger Flowers, he beat Greb twice in the 1920s. I guess he had too many losses.
There is no surviving film of Greb. Newspaper accounts often mention he fought with open gloves in an era where a lot of questionable tactics were ignored by refs. Until actual film footage emerges, I'm inclined to question his status.
