Watching your favourite team go in and out of a rebuild phase has to hurt. We’ve seen a lot of GM’s come into a franchise and severely derail their development. With that being said, here are the Top 5 WORST GMs in NHL History.

  1. I’m a oilers fan. And too be fair to Chiarelli that Draisaitl contract is looking like an absolute steal, the Maroon trade, chaisson signing and talbot trade also did work out. None of them lasted yes but some trades don’t They were still great trades at the time. Point being at least he had some good trades 😂

  2. Mike Gillis was a fantastic GM. Back to back Presidents trophies, game 7 of the finals. The Brown and McIver trades had no impact on the organization good or bad, what stupid examples to use. And Keith Ballard was not part of the Hodgson trade. Great job with your research there. You’ve lost a viewer permanently with this piss poor assessment. Try again.

  3. Mike Keenan when he was GM (and coach) in St Louis. He absolutely ran that team into the ground with asinine player moves.

  4. Mike Gillis is smart on money (OK, if you exclude Mat Sundin, but work very well on cap control) even though draft record isn't that great (thanks to the scouting team) and he has some innovative ideas (sleep doctors) to improve performance. Especially when you compare to Jim Benning (remember OEL and Louie Eriksson? Also, missed signing on Chris Tanev, Tyler Toffoli, and Troy Stecher?), Dave Nonis (remember Patrick White?) and Mike Keenan (Mark Messier)

  5. Maybe just maybe the stupidy of Leafs gm's are correlated to the unreal expectations of the Toronto media. Just a theory ….

  6. Jim Benning was far worse for the Canucks. At least Gillis got the Canucks somewhere in the post season. Jim Benning just sat there and put the Canucks in cap hell, which still effects the team to this day.

Also I believe Vancouver won the Corey Schneider trade because they got Bo Horvat in return

  7. I'd say you can't blame the GM for Roy trade since he refused to play after the head coach didn't pull him out of the game and forced him to stay in the net. GM doesn't make those decisions about who stays in the net during the game.

  8. The FISHSTIX franchise caught lightning in a bottle 40 plus years ago & has been a cruel joke ever since : nobody says “ I want to play on Long Island “ ……. No one

  9. Scratching my head, not sure how mike gillis is on this list when he achieved more than any of the other gms before and after him for the canucks. Multiple president trophies, one win away from the stanley cup, signing sundin (although overpaid for the contract) took the sedins to another level to which they peaked at 100+ points and back to back art ross. Not to mention how you could bash signing malhotra. 2.5 mill for a faceoff king 3rd line centre man was great value until his freak eye injury…

  10. You didn't mention John Ferguson Sr. Rangers GM who forced Rod Gilbert to resign, introduced those god-awful shield jersey, and worst of all traded upcoming star Rick Middleton to Boston for a washed up Ken Hodge. Possibly the worst trade in hockey.

  11. … in history ? You forget Ned Harkness of Red Wings. Also, vengeful Jack Adams trading away Lindsay, Sawczuk, Prystai, Bucyk, Glenn Hall, Red Kelly were all poor moves.

  12. Houle was one of a disastrous run of Habs GMs starting with Irving Grundman and ending with Bergevin(except for Serge Savard).
But Houle's ineptitude in terms of trades and his hiring of Mario Tremblay as HC highlighted the era.
Hopefully he will be the benchmark for the fallacy of hiring GMs solely based being former players.

  13. this isn't the list if jim benning isn't on it. the canucks right now are 3 years away from being 3 years away from contending because of the horrendous deals this clown made.

  14. Mike Gillis was good. Even if you don’t think he’s good… still miles better than other recent guys such as Chiarelli, Benning, or Fletcher.

Ron Hainsey was a very solid defenceman; not great but solid.

  15. With all due respect, I don't think that you can blame it on Rejan Houle for The Patrick Roy Trade, since it was due to Patrick's On Ice Feud/Tirade with Mario Tremblay, the then Head Coach of The Montreal Canadiens, and Demand To Be Traded. I don't think that, in A Situation like that, there could have been much Leverage in A Trade (Similar to Pierre Luc Dubois Wanting Out Of The Winnipeg Jets Now). Let me know what you think

  16. Grundman demolished one of the greatest dynasties in hockey history. Bringing the retirement of Sam Pollock and prompting the designated successor Scotty Bowman to leave Montreal to be the GM and coach in Buffalo. They were declining anyway but Grundman precipitated the loss of Jacques Lemaire and Pierre Bouchard and was GM for the retirement of Ken Dryden. He drafted doug wickenheiser ahead of david savard. Worst GM in Canadiens history

  17. It makes me sad for Houle because unlike a guy like Milbury, he is one of the nicest person you'll ever meet. He was put in a very bad situation and he did not have the skills to do the job.

  18. Sabres fan here.
    Andrej Sekera.
    Savior of the franchise.
    No. Really?
We couldnt get rid of him fast enough. He was OK , but the Savior idea is stunning.
    🙄
