Ever wonder why Moe Norman placed the club behind the ball? Ask Masters Champion Jon Rahm, who mentioned Moe Norman in a recent interview. Jon places the club behind the ball to change the path of his ball flight.
I believe this tip will help you swing from the inside

About the Single Plane Swing
The Single Plane golf swing is not a quick fix golf technique. It is a system, beginning at address, that simplifies the most important moment of the golf swing – impact.
Starting at address on two planes where the arms hang straight down at address, the Conventional golf swing is complicated. Because the arms are hanging straight down, a conventional golfer must lift the body into impact creating stress on the back.
This upward movement to accommodate the two planes is unnecessary.
The Single Plane Golf swing simplifies the golf swing by eliminating the need for the upward movement by starting and impacting on the same plane.

Where's Jon's endorsement 🤷🏻🤦🤣
Todd, this is an outstanding video! The comparison of the 7 iron to the driver MADE SENSE!
I’m so grateful that you have continued the legacy of Moe Norman (with much better explanations of what Moe did)!!
Moe was a G
Outstanding presentation!!👍
Hey, amazing video. By placing handle ahead of club, does this reduce the natural loft? Guess you compensate by tilt of trail shoulder – down ??
The arc of the swing path delivers the club head at its bottom (square to the line) and if the ball is back in the stance then the path is more inside to out while if the ball is further forward, the arc leads to a outside to in path. To avoid slices and hooks you must then manipulate the face to ensure that it is square to the line of flight to reduce the spin imparted to a minimum (draw or fade). Pros can do it (most of the time but they do err with serious repercussions on the narrow fairways of tournament play) but the best part of the SPS mechanics is that the club and ball meet at the optimum location for straight shots. Less effort required so call me lazy but I like that… 🙂
I tried this at the indoor range yesterday with limited success. Swinging from the inside most of my shots with the driver were pop ups, heel strikes and hooks. I stood farther from the ball with same effect. It can be a frustrating game.
This is an incredibly easy to follow instruction video that I can start applying instantly. I have never seen the left side of a golf course, always hit a fade and often its way too much fade. I am going to work on this concept with full confidence. Thanks for all the you do Todd I think ive seen every single one of your videos!
I hit every single shot from my (left) front foot, Ive no idea why but it works for me , yes im not long with my irons, had rounds where some people where hitting 8 irons and I hit a 5 but I got closer and stopped the ball quicker, I can easly get back spin from a 4 iron if needed, I can hape the ball left to right // right to left when I want or need to.
Now given the fact I play blades (old set with NORMAL lofts not silly ones like they do these days) I'm ok with the yardage sure someone might hit a 5 iron past my 3 iron but hey But hey -ho………. it's about scores not distance, off the tee I'm quite a long driver and I can hold my own.
Yes I play with a slight fade andthis I compensate for . you can talk to a fade ((you tend to swear at a draw) like all (out-to in swingers ) I'm good around the greens, ever chip I have to not lob one in close when a bump and run will do the job better.
But this is me, amI a pro ? NO, am I a bad golfer? NO, I'm a single figure player , that gets to play in spasums maybe 5 or 6 times every 3 years when the mood /money takes me. (money being I don't earn a lot and I just have to get on teh course after a few years too proove to myself Im still alive and can still play).
Back story to my game, I lived 40 yards from a golf course, 18 holes before school, 36 holes after , dinner time then hit the range before dark…………. in my teens I was adicted and not a great player 12 handicap at best, gave up the game at 18 (girls/ booze etc)……….. bought a driver for xmas 22 years later, wow what happened ? balls stay in shape now everything seems massive with my 275cc driver and things go a long long way not I'm not 99 stone soaking wet 😀 (still use that taylormade s200 driver btw).
Golf isn't rocket Science…… infact it's not even rocket salard,…………….. you will improve with your faults no matter what with practice.
Mo Norman was a legend, most of the reason beacause his was so strange, but he had his swing
where is the moe norman movie
That's an awesome video Todd. Great work, thank you.
Your best video to date!
When did Rahm talk about Moe?
I was wondering if you should bow your wrist like John Rahm as well?
At the top of the backswing, what is the ideal tilt angle of the shoulder for a wedge, 6 iron and driver? My height is 6'. Thanks in advance.
I played my first round of the year today, and it was the first time I got to put the SPS into action… It did NOT disappoint. It wasn't perfect, but considering it was the first round of the year, I was blown, a, way… 🤯
Have been experimenting with placing the driver 8-12 inches behind the ball, with mixed results, when it works it’s fantastic, when it doesn’t it’s no bueno!
Mo says everyone should start 4inch back from the ball but also says that he wouldn't advise anyone to swing like he did, play from the heart.
Hi Todd, just thought you'd be interested to hear l just watched a video by Alex Elliot who rates himself in the top 50 instructors in the world! The video is titled "Every Golfer can drop 5 shots using Jon Rahm's 10 Inch set up". He recommends sitting the ball 10 inches behind the ball, THEN tilt! I messaged him commenting that perhaps he had been watching Todd Graves videos as opposed to Jon Rahm. Also commented that you can't tilt after you grip the club. You,ll also notice that his hands are a little low. So he hasn't been paying attention. Also, l just feel he,s using some of your techniques haphazardly, which is wrong in my opinion. He,s therefore giving wrong golf instruction. Thought it was important to let you know, as l,ve been watching, liking and practicing your golf instruction for a couple of months now.
Hi Todd. I was wondering do you keep your eye on the ball?
Thanks. Do you focus on the ball or the spot where you start the club head, with your eyes?
Excellent explanation Todd. I always wondered why Moe Norman placed the club back like that. You have explained the reason very clearly. I think I can do that and will begin exploring that technique. Thank you.
Are foam balls a good substitute to practice at home?
I’m new to single plane but chipping and approach I have adopted it with great success no data or thins and always on line . I’m working my way up the bag but I have it working for driver hitting it long and straight
In, out, right, left etc… everything comes down to knowing where the ball would go after impact. Swinging like a blind bat and expect for the best never gets you where you want to be. All is about control. Everybody is different. Understand your body first.
Looks like you've lost weight… Good for you..!
John still the from Moe baby! I tried that with these big clubs and I hit 265 consistently
So my issue is a duck hook. Does this help out with that as well, or do I have something else that I should be focusing on?
Your usual bull crap for views. Pure gargage.
Path has very little to do with draw or fade spin. That's almost entirely generated by face angle at impact relative to path (e.g. closed for a draw or open for a fade). However, most faders need to start the ball left (for a right hander) in order for the fade to find the center of the fairway. Vice versa for a drawer.
can you tell me what you mean when you say in your book , "Moe's wrists were fully leveraged".
Excellent insight, I was not aware that by putting the club head close to the ball the path will be preset to go outside. There is always something new to the game, even after all this years.
Best video EVER. SLICING driver FOR 30 YEARS. Tried everything. Combination of head 4 inches behind ball and hands ahead of head like an iron has had huge plus 4 me. Hit 15 drives on 18 holes today has 3 slight slices. YAHOOOOOOOO
The upper right arm held against the upper chest …tucked…creates and assures a constant inside take away and maintain an inside follow through ……like Hogan
A toro pasado…….
Moe might not have been able to express himself conventionally but the words weren't important, he expressed himself through the swing, it was all there in front of you.

Whenever I place the club head a few inches behind the ball my eye wants to look at the club and not the ball. I believe because of that I am losing sight of the ball on my downswing. Ever hear of that issue? I'm assuming that I should place the club head in proper position but look at the ball when I start to take the club back? Any advice on this? Thanks.
I can never understand these drills. Too many swing thoughts
Vert , very interesting observations and explanation , thanks Todd. Where would you say your weight distribution is on lead and back foot during set up and then through the swing?
Been doing this for 20 years with my driver . ( Saw Moe doing it and tried it) . Then over the years I’ve kinda refined it a bit , the middle
Of the club head in the middle of my stance (center) then ball forward of that line (4-5 inches) and it’s just baby draws on auto . The center of the driver (club head) center of my stance , helps me get the ball position and my distance from ball consistent each time . Great great tip for any player! Great video Todd
I have watched a hundred of these videos from different people. You all say and show different ways. Go Away.
I don't get it. If you have the clubface square at impact you cant really square it up 8" behind the ball. It would have to be closed at impact.
GREAT stuff. I'll never forget watching Moe (Scenic Woods, Hamilton, Ontario) hit ball-after-ball with such a natural, fluid, accurate, ease. Actually, it frustrated the heck out of me! 🤣 It's great to see someone of the caliber of Jon Rahm – the best in the world and the best golf association in the world (PGA Tour) – utilizing one of Moe's gems! Thank you Mr. Graves!
Good stuff – I remember being a back shop kid in the late 80's at Meadowbrook GCC north of Toronto and seeing Moe put on a range clinic for the members before a Canadian Tour event. I've recently adopted this "driver head back 4-5 inches to set the right shoulder at address", and its baby draw city for me off the tee. Better launch and spin numbers and its given me so much confidence to just swing at it without fear. Thumbs up.
Todd, I have been experimenting with this for the last month but I really enjoy your explenation regarding path and also the relationship to this approach with other clubs. I do have one question and would appriciate your opinion, Some instructors teaching this method suggest looking in front of the club while other say to continue looking at the ball. Your thoughts?
Great
I could listen to Moe Norman, or Mickey Mouse, talk for hours.
