  1. David, big fan here & The R Miller torch bearer comments are valid…totally different but valid. NOW, I respect your opinions & agree with you most of the time but I have to take issue with a couple of things. The race was packed with excitement from my chair. Maybe from your seat at the race it wasn't compelling but as a viewer at home it was really interesting. No casual fan can tell the difference in 207/225 watching this..there is no visual difference. I'm 63…I remember pacer lights & 3 cars on the the same lap at the end with half the field blowed up half way thru. This is SO much better! I do believe the cars are too fast and god forbid one clears the fence so that is a valid concern. We got lucky with the tire but the red flags were a great idea IMO. People want a race & danger is just part of Indy. That's it & great job! (btw, do some reporting from the 24 Hrs at LeMans dammit!)

  2. Dave, were you watching the same race? The restarts were wild…..4-5 wide racing! Man, get a grip dude, this race was incredible.

  3. I understand that the Indy 500 is 500 miles but for oval tracks with 10 or less laps left caution laps don’t count. I can also why it’s a bad because all it will do is bunch everyone up and cause more problems. Indy car needs to find a way on ovals and figure out how to make sure the race ends under green

  4. It is SO OBVIOUS that the race control would end the race on yellow flag, if it was reversed positions for Newgarden and Ericsson (Penske do own the indycar series and the INDY500 track, don't forget that, it is so obvious it is pathetic, and it shouldnt be allowed to also own a team when you both own the track they are racing at and owning the series as well). Ericsson was only allowed basically half a lap without safety car (which is against the rules) to warm his tyres up after standing still in the pit during the last red flag, while both Pato and Newgarden were allowed several yellow flags WITH safety car before the restarts they were leading on, which makes drafting after the leader less useful compared to Newgarden had after Ericsson. Ericsson was so fucking robbed from a back-to-back victory on indy500, that is facts! He is the true winner this year, no doubts about it. Discrimination and corruption is popular among americans.

  5. Guys, I was in that stand when that tire flew overhead. It was unsettling to say the least. Scary to think what could have happened. But praise the Lord nobody was hurt. And also the race should NEVER be red flagged unless a fatality has occured. Good observation about 95% of the attendees at the 500 are one race fans. The 500 finish should never be in question.

  6. The final red flag I agree should not happen, that race should have ended under yellow. The first I think was fine from the perspective of checking the safety barriers and the state of fans due to the flying debris, if someone was hurt it's better to have the race stopped so all efforts can be onto that. The second red came out for entertainment purposes but actually it was early enough that I have no problem with it, I think an effort should be made to get a race finished under green, but the third red flag was too far and was too dangerous, also agree should be a rule saying you must have two wheels above white line at all times as that's track limits, maybe all four wheels above it, to many close calls with the end of pitlane and the grass.

  7. IndyCar said the tether on the Kirkwood tire did not fail… like what? It ended up in the golf course, I call that a classic example of tether failure

  8. red flags should only ever be used when it is needed for safety reasons. if it takes you 3 laps to throw a red flag then you probably didnt need to throw it. it should never be thrown for competition reasons

  9. And another thing David, How can you say Josef 100 percent earned that win when Roger owns the track, owns the racing series, owns the officiating body that called those bullshit red flags, and owns the team that won, do you honestly believe they would have called that last red flag if Josef was leading and not second? HELL NO! they would have said 2 laps, not enough to restart, safety is a concern, but instead they throw safety out the window, start the race right out of the pits without a one lap warmup. That race was stolen from at least TWO drivers.

  10. Hope you still talk about your experience at le Mans afterwards. I'm from France and my grandfather used to live in Le Mans. I drove many times down the Mulsane straight but somehow I still haven't experienced the actual race on site. Enjoy !

  11. Spot on the red flags have to go I've seen a lot of racing end under caution never felt it was unfair. Don't make Indy nas-crap !!

  12. You are so American! This is the number one reason racing in America is for children. Just like football. Ever seen rugby? Or isle of man, rally, paris-dakar. Irish road racing???
Yeah already thought you never did.
    American Pussies…

  13. I agree the 3 red flags were to much but I will say this was my 26th Indy 500 at 45 yrs old and it was a great race and the fans in the southeast vista loved it in my opinion

  14. Don't understand how you can state emphatically that Newgarden earned the win and then say you don't agree with the one lap finish. You shouldn't end a race like this under a yellow flag. My only problem is that the red flad should've been thrown 1 lap earlier to allow for 2 full final laps. Check out Marshall Pruett's video where he interviewed a team engineer who said tire temp (aka., safety) wasn't an issue. With regard to accidents that occurred at the back of the pack at the end, that's just racing and could have happened at anytime during the race.

  15. Agree with you 100%. I'd love to see IndyCar address these things. First, the "dragon" move dipping into pit lane needs to stop. I'd love to completely eliminate the dragon, but not sure there's a way to do that. Use a F1 style track limit that if you dip your tires below the pit line (except if avoiding a collision), then you are committing to pit entry and subject to the pit speed limit. Second, the red flags need a limit. IndyCar needs to make a definitive rule that a SINGLE red flag will be used to attempt a green flag finish if an incident occurs between X and 5 laps from the end. Less than 5 laps left, no red flag. Maybe there's different lap numbers for a road/street race vs an oval/superspeedway.

  16. They waved the yellow flag the announcer thought out loud it would end under caution …..then ( after they knew who was the leader) they wave the red flag. This gave the Penske car one last chance….. just saying

  17. Appsolutely a sham, shame on IndyCar and especially Roger Penske. If his Golden boy Newgarden was leading with two laps to go they never would have thrown the red flag, guaranteed! This was an orchestrated finish by IndyCar just so the BOSS could claim the victory. That brings up the real problem with IndyCar in that the man who owns the series should never be allowed to own a race team in that series. All his ownership does is bring up the question of conflict of interest and favoritism. The questionable finish of this race is a perfect example of his influence having a detrimental effect on what I thought was a very entertaining race. Too bad Roger stuck his nose in where it never should have been in the first place.

  18. I loved seeing Josef in the stands with the fans. It will be iconic, like Helio climbing the fence. Agreed on the driving, that last lap some could have easily hit the end of the pit wall. The same thing goes with TK's pass in the grass.

  19. 100 David ! Wicken's crash at pocono changed how I feel about the fan experience/entertainment. I believe that they red flags for fan entertainment. Which shouldn't happen the safety of the drivers and the fans is far greater of Importance than any entertainment.

  20. Just wanted to add one more thing…the three red flag debacle at Melbourne this year was universally criticized by drivers, teams, fans, and journalists…you got basically the same thing happening here at this race…yet with pretty much only Marcus and David Land calling it out with virtually everyone else saying "move along, nothing out of the ordinary happened"…this does not bode well for the future of IndyCar. Nothing will improve if ICS can't look at its issues with clear eyes…the insanity of restarting right out of the pits and weaving down into the pitlane entrance isn't even a talking point…and that's just downright scary.

  21. These red rules are going to get someone, either a driver or fans, killed. Going more than one try is upping the risk greatly. I've already contacted media and the series about this. Let's see if the series blows me off…..

  22. David, you are so right about those “Event” fans. I bring a couple every year. It makes me look smarter😊

  23. I am much happier that the last red was thrown and the race then ended under green, rather than the race being decided by a pass between the race going green in turn four and before the start/finish line and the yellow being displayed again. That would have been less than a memorable finish.

  24. We all love Newgarden, how couldn't you? Just sad that his win forever will be controversial. 2020 when Sato won under yellow flag Indycar stated that 5 was to few to red flag, this year 2 laps was enough. That's really wierd and dangerous in my opinion. I sadly think that if Newgarden was leading the race when that yellow light turn on they would finished the race under yellow. Marcus Ericsson took the lead before that last yellow and should have won the race. BUT if that second red flag crash didn't happend Ericsson would probably be 3rd at best. So many ifs and buts in Indycar😂

  25. Insightful commentary as usual. Thank you for drawing attention to the excessive (and dangerous) use of red flags, the need for advancement in car design and conflict of interest questions.
As a casual racing fan I was aware of little of what you discussed. The MSM covering the race talked about none of these things. I found the race exciting but the safety issues you bring up are obviously more important. A fatality at Indy would be disastrous to Indycar.
Thank you and Kyle for all the content and hope you have a great trip to LeMans!

  26. So, if you want to send some constructive comments to Indycar, (even though they may throw them the trash) where do you send them?

  27. Let face reality, the track and Indycar got lucky, pure and simple when that tire got airborne and cleared the catch fence. It was pure luck that the crash happened where it did. 100 feet to the right and that tire goes into the crowd at an unimaginable speed. There would have been multiple deaths and then what would be talking about?

  28. Why can't there be a rule where the pace care laps don't count if there are less than 10 racing laps left? That way the drivers can still warm up the tires properly and the fans can get a green flag finish?

  29. "Three red flags absolutely ridiculous!" you say? I disagree. With every red flag and especially the last one the crowd at the yard of bricks cheered without exception. This is an entertainment event and the crowd absolutely loved it!

  30. This series has become a joke, I grew up always watching this and knowing the names, but it's become such a spec car mess. Teams need to make their own cars again. Pit lane needs to be improved. This isn't the 70s anymore. Surely they can do better. And we need to go back to open wheel racing not this covered garbage

  31. Excellent comments. I am a 30 year NASCAR fan, but these Indy cars are on another level.
They should never race like closed wheeled cars in bunched up packs. Dan Wheldon, RIP, lost his life due to this.
True race fans can appreciate a win under caution.

  32. Any idea why they removed the rear wheel covers? I thought they were supposed to stop cars launching.

Difficult. My view would be to stop warm up laps after a red counting to race distance, they did dither calling a red even though it was obvious it needed it which caused the problem!

Cheer up, indycar is still way better than f1 is at the moment even if the chassis is old.

    You'll love Le Mans!

  33. The 3 red flags in the last 15 laps of the race were preposterous! It cheapens the victory for Josef Newgarden and it cheapens the victor of ANY indycar race, especially the Indy 500! If any of those 3 crashes would've happened on laps 1, 100 or 150, no red flags would've occurred. Drivers decide races by how foolishly or intelligently they drive. Officials in all other sports (strike zones, holding & pass interferences, fouls, etc…) are expected to be CONSISTENT through the entirety of a game. When race officials just make stuff up as the race goes it diminishes the quality of the product. The end of this race was counterfeit. Nothing against Newgarden…he's a good role model for the sport, but Ericsson & Ferrucci (and all true indycar fans) got screwed in this one. Indycar, don't become nascar!😕
